The Common Juniperus



The Common Juniperus is a slowly groing tree or large shrub ,
up to 6 meter high. It grows on every soil, and in every climate.
For this reason it can be found in every part of Europe and
North America and North Asia, about half the surface of the Earth.
The seeds are spread by the wind.


The Common Juniperus in park and garden



This evergreen shrub is commonly used in horticulture as an
ornamental shrub, as a stand alone in parks and gardens. It will enhance
bird live providing food in the form of berries and shelter for
building a nest, protected by the stickels. The wood is strong,
but there is little usage for it.

There is only one wood of Juniper in the Netherlands, it can be
found near Park Hoge Veluwe.



Ripe and unripe berries can be found together.














    De jeneverbes is een wat slordige groeier. Deze jeneverbes heeft afgelopen
    zomer last gehad van een Bosrank welke de struik ingroeide.


    The flowering of the Common Juniper





    The female flowers are small and green ,surrounded by leaves (B ) and consist of three
    seedbuds A that will grow out to a green berry, and after more then a year
    into the blue berry. Because of the slow riping on can
    find blue berries C ; and unripe green berries throughout the year.




    The male flowers

    The male flower only opens on dry weather(E ) and release it pollen,
    spread by the wind. The female flower produces a sticky liquid
    to catch those pollen and become fertilized
