Sedum

Sedum is a large family of succulents. These plants are
very resistent to drought, and have adapted leaves.
These leaves can swell up to store water. The stoma's
or valve's in the leaf are closed during sunshine, this
way reducing evaporation. The leaves are covered with
wax, for the same purpose.

Sedum acre, Goldmoss Sedum, or Wallpepper

This is a small plant that can be found on walls,
graves and roofs. When it flowers in june/juli it forms
beautiful yellow flowers, covering youre roof, wall or grave
with a yellow blanket.

Wallpepper will enhance the esthetic vale of youre roof , and also
the thermo-isolation, but heightens the weight on the roof also.

Covering youre rooftop with a sedumcarpet has some advantages: It is
beautiful and it isolates by keeping the warmth in the winter and
keeping the building cool in the summer, mostly by evaporation.
So stormwater runoff is reduced .
Biggest disadvantage is the addition of weight, about 200kg/square meter.

Sedum kamtschaticum can easely be combined with
sedum acre to cover roofs or graves or rocks in
youre garden.

If you keep the soil thickness about 4 inches high then
the following plants can grow on youre roof: Sedum and
sempervivumm, columbine, hyacinth and lavendel and iceplanta.
This is the sedum "Herbstfreude", the most populair
cultivar , that flowers in the mid of the fall.

Sedum spectabile "Meteor" , has lovely pink colors,
flowers during summertime and attracts a lot of butterflies.

Sedum obtusifolium, originally from Iran, covers
walls and is very hardy.

Sedum pachyclados originally from Afghanistan, grows
very slowly and is very resistent against periods of dryness.

This succulent grows on every roof but is
easily removed as it has only shallow roots.
