Long eared owl



A beautiful thin owl with long prominent ear tufts.
This owl sleeps during daytime in a tree and starts
hunting in the evening. The Long eared owl hunts for
other resting birds an mouses.
During wintertime these birds form groups and live together,
During summertime they hunt solitairy in the woods.
Asio otus or long eared owl (above) painted
together with Asio flammeus in a Nord-American
landscape. The long-eared owl has a large distribution
area : North America, Europe an Asia with Japan included.

    Ear tufts

    The ear tufs are no real ears . They have a function
    in the communcation between the owl, but are not
    used for hearing. During the flight they are folded
    down.
