common Rue



The Common Rue is a perennial herb often used in
gardens as an ornamental plant. It flowers during
the summer with bright yellow flowers. Even more
attractive are the blueish leaves. Common rue is
a well known source of skin irritation
(dermatitis). Common Rue grows on every ground,
but prefers chalcky grounds. It is resistant
against drought.


Common Rue as a herb


Common Rue is a herb with a very bitter and strong taste.
It has a very small place in the kitchen as a herb.

The Italians add it to grappa, but in very small amounts.

Rue or herb of grace in the past


Rue once was used as an antidote to
poisons, and also used to sprinkle
the holy water. It also has secret
powers against witchkraft.



Rue is fytotoxic


The leaves of Rue extract an oil that causes
irritation to the skin if that skin is
exposed to the sun. In the worse case it
causes blisters, but mostly only itching.

Rue in parfum


Rue is used in parfum, and for this reason
it is cultivated. Those parfums are called
Rue parfum.
