Taxus baccata, Yew Tree
The taxus is a slow growing small conifer,
which produces red berries at the end of the
summer The taxus buccata can get very old.
The whole tree is very toxic, all parts contain
the taxanes. Yew prefers to grow in slightly
chalcky ground, and also prefers to grow in shade,
under a beech for example. There are male and
female yewtrees,the female carries the red berries.
Heavily pruned yew don't carry any berries.
Taxine
Taxine is een mengsel van stoffen, alle giftig.
Een ervan is paclitaxel, welke in gezuiverde vorm als
Taxol wordt verkocht: een geneesmiddel tegen vele
vormen van kanker, carcinomen met name zoals ovarium en
mamma carcinoom. Taxol remt de deling
van cellen. Het taxol is op dit moment een van
de meest voorgeschreven cytostatica. Tegenwoordig
is het mogelijk om Taxol grotendeels synthetisch
te maken, een moeilijk proces.Maar het werd ook
verkregen uit de Taxus canadensis

De bessen worden rijp na de zomer, Het duurt maar
liefst 9 maanden voordat de bessen , na bevruchting,
rijp zijn. Bessen zijn alleen op de vrouwelijke
boom te vinden. De bessen of beter : de zaadmantel,
zijn het enige deel van de taxus boom wat eetbaar is,
voor vogels om precies te zijn. want het zaad is
sterk giftig. Vogels hebben er geen last van, voor
mensen en paarden is het dodeijk.
De Taxus als haag
Taxus is de struik welke zich het beste voor het maken
van hagen leent. Ook voor het snoeien in vormen
is taxus voortreffelijk. Bedenk dat Taxus zeer
langzaam groeit, en dat een volgende generatie
er het meeste plezier van heeft. Gebruik bij
het snoeien van lange rechte stukken een
electrische snoeischaar, bij de ronde stukken
een hand snoeischaar.

- gebruik per meter haag 3 taxus-boompjes.
Cultivars va taxus
Er zijn vele cultivars :
Taxus baccata 'Fastigiata' en taxus 'Raket', en taxus'Standishii'
worden vooral hoog, zoals Italiaanse cypressen.
Taxus baccata 'Washingtonii' heeft gekleurde naalden.
Taxushout
Taxushout is sterk , zwaar en taai. Het is ook
makkelijk te bewerken. Omdeze redenen is het
veel gezocht. Net als de rest van de boom is
ook het hout giftig. Een boom geeft maar erg
weinig bruikbaar hout, om deze reden is het
aanbod van taxus hout erg gering en dus de prijs hoog.
Bij het zagen van hout een stofbeschermer gebruiken
in verband met de giftigheid van taxus.
Taxanes
Taxanes is a mixture of substances, all toxic.

Taxol is sold: a cure for many forms of cancers,
particularly cancers such as ovarian and breast cancer.
Taxol inhibits the division of cells.

will grow in pots and containers. These yew are
also called dwarfyew.
Yew pruning
Pruning a yew is best done in june, do only
once a year. A yew tolerates pruning radicaly
pruning, but not pruning in full sun or at
high temperatures.
