The River birch, water birch



Betula nigra
A decidous tree, that can be found near rivers and streams.
The River birch is a medium high tree and will grow in
almost every soil. This tree is very populair in parks
and can also be found on graveyards.





The bark of the River birch


The bark of this tree is the most striking aspect: it changes
of color during its livetime: it starts with pink papery strips
and changes into a black bark with ridges in the end.











    The dark bark is covered with lichen and has deep ridges.






    The river birch in fall, it then produces nice yellow leaves.

    Alder fastburning, good firewood.

    Birch good , but burns fast

    Horse chestnut bad quality firewood, hard to ignite.

    Beech very good, but need to be very dry.

    Oak very good

    Lime good.

    Ashvery good firewood

    Mulberry very good , but hard to get

    monkey puzzle woodbad firewood, don't use it

    White poplar smokes, bad firewood

    Black locust or Robiniavery good and exspensive.

    Walnut good , but hard to get

    Yew good.

    Larch bad firewood.
