Once the third qualifying round has been completed, the 32 remaining clubs are drawn into eight groups of four. For the draw of the 1st group stage, the 32 teams are divided into four pots. Pot 1 will comprise last year's title holders and the top seven clubs in the team ranking. Pot 2 will comprise the following eight clubs in the rankings, and so on. Each group in the 1st group stage will contain one team of each pot. But it takes a very complicated draw procedure (see draw procedure) to determine to which group a particular team is allocated. One objective of the draw is that teams from the same country cannot not be drawn into the same group.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the first group stage qualify for the second group stage. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the third round of the current UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated. Seeding procedure for the draw for the second group stage: • The 16 clubs involved will be divided among four draw pots • The 8 group-winners will be put into seeded pots 1 and 2 according to their different coefficients. The 4 group-winners with the best coefficients will go into seed pot 1. • The 8 group runners-up will be put into seed pots 3 and 4 according to the same principle, i.e. the 4 clubs with the best coefficients will go into seed pot 3. • One club from each seed pot will be drawn into each of the four groups. • Clubs from the same association cannot be drawn into the same group. • Group-winners and runners-up from the same first-stage group will not be drawn into the same group again. The four group-winners and the four runners-up of the second group stage qualify for the quarter-finals. The clubs that finish this stage in third or fourth position in their group are eliminated from the competition.

Seeding procedure for the draw of the quarter-finals: Each of the four runners-up during the second group stage will be drawn against a group winner but will not be drawn against the winner from the same group. In this draw, teams from the same national association can meet each other. For the semi-finals, no clubs will be seeded.
