The clubs defeated in the first and second qualifying rounds are eliminated from the competition. The 16 clubs defeated in the third qualifying round are entitled to play in the first round of the current UEFA Cup. For the qualifying rounds a draw between the same number of seeded and unseeded clubs determines the pairings.
The UEFA Congress at January 26, decided that clubs from Montenegro, UEFA's newest member association, and Andorra and San Marino will play in the 1st qualifying round of the Champions League. Therefore the number of teams in the 1st qualifying round is increased by 6 teams. This implies that the champion of the 25th country on the ranking list (Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia) will have to play in the 1st qualifying round.
Since the title holder AC Milan already qualified for the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League, the champions of the 23th and 24th countries on the ranking list (Denmark and Hungary) gain direct access to the 2nd qualifying round, and the champion of the 16th country on the ranking list (Switzerland) has direct access to the 3rd qualifying round.

Once the third qualifying round has been completed, the 32 remaining clubs are drawn into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association will not be drawn into the same group. A computer draw determines the final position of the teams within their group. These positions determine the order of the home and away matches. The following match sequence applies:

At the time of the draw the match AEK vs. Sevilla was not yet played (postponed due to the death of a Sevilla player). Therefore the winner of AEK-Sevilla was seeded with the highest coefficient of both teams during the draw of the group stage.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the second round. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the third round of the current UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated.
The draw for the 2nd round takes the following rules into account:
a) Clubs from the same association must not be drawn against each other,
b) The winners and runners-up of the same group must not be drawn against each other,
c) The group winners must not be drawn against each other,
d) The runners up must not be drawn against each other,
e) The runners up must play the first leg at home.
The group winners are seeded above the runners-up.

For the draw of the quarter-finals and semi-finals clubs are seeded based on the results in the group and first knockout stage of the current season (eight matches). The ranking is calculated in the same way as the team coefficients, but no bonus points nor country contribution are applied. If two or more clubs are equal on points the UEFA Team Ranking 2007 determines the seeding.

NOTE: It appears that UEFA changed the regulations at Dec 13, 2007, and that there will be no seeding in the quarter-final. Which makes the list above useless. In the CL regulations 2007/08 published in December 2007 by uefa.com the QF and SF seeding is removed.
