This page shows the format of the 2000/2001 season for the UEFA Cup.

For the first time, a losing national cup finalist that qualifies for the UEFA Cup because the cup winner already qualified for the Champions League, does not get the UEFA Cup cup-winner spot. This spot goes to highest league entrant. In 2000 this rule only affects countries ranked 9-18, because for these countries the cup winner qualifies directly for the first round, while the other teams have to play in the qualification round. So, this year the cup-winner spot of Norway goes to Molde FK, and the cup-winner spot of Turkey goes to Gaziantepspor, while Brann Bergen and Antalyaspor have to play in the qualification round.

In 2000 the place for the defending cup holder is not used, because Galatasaray qualified for the Champions League. This leads to the following specific format for the UEFA Cup of 2000/2001:
