Question: San Marino, Andorra

Hi there,

I understand why Liechtenstein only has the cupwinner in the uefa-cup, because they don't have their own league.

But why do San Marino and Andorra only get one place in the uefa-cup and why do they only play in the uefa-cup and not in the 1st qualifying round of the CL?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked already, but I searched the forum and Bert's page and I couldn't find anything about it.

thx

I guess that Andorra and San Marino only have one team because they have a 0.000 coefficient, which means they lost all the games ever played. For the same reason, the champions go to the UEFA Cup. The current format of the European Cups does not permit more teams in the QR of the CL, so that is why the weakest two countries have only one representant, which goes to the UC. It will be interesting to observe if things change after Kazakhstan joins UEFA.

It doesn't have anything to do with the coefficient. The rules were already implied before teams from Andorra and San Marino played a single European football match.

To my knowledge teams from Andorra and San Marino were entitled to play in the UEFA Cup upon request of the national football associations, and because "there has been sufficient improvement in football in these countries" (e.g. see www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/news/000523a.html.

The format of the qualification rounds in the Champions League can easily be adapted. There are many ways to do this. But for instance it could be decided that direct qualification for QR2 is only for the 9 champions from countries ranked 16-24. And that QR1 would involve now 24 teams from countries ranked 25 or lower, including Andorra and San Marino.

So, it's just a matter of choice.

Sorry to sound a pain Bert, but your response doesn't entirely answer the question. Is there a reason for these countries only having one team i.e do the countries have to meet certain requirements or do UEFA deem the countries to be too poor a standard to allow more entrants from the respective countries.
Hope I've made my point clear, if not let me know.

I don't know anymore then listed above. I don't know of any formal rule or reason. All I know is the reasoning in the link above: "there is sufficient improvement" to allow one entry in the UEFA Cup.

Just a guess, but maybe these countries teams don't have enough stadia that comply to UEFA rules. I mean, these tiny countries you drive into and out again in five minutes. So maybe they each only have one ground big enough for European games.

first of all, thanks for the answers!

and yes san marino for instance only has one stadium where they can play a european game. Its the Stadio di Serravalle, I was there last year when SP Cosmos played against SK Rapid Wien.

thanks again, I have been asking myself that question for quite a time!
