| As for this year, the battle for 6th is officially over. And for 5th too. France cannot overtake Portugal. For the 3rd year in a row, the portuguese league is the 5th best in Europe.
And it'll be proven again if either Benfica or FC Porto face Lyon in Europa League's quarter finals. |

| viulo, the Portugese league is Number 5 in UEFA ranking, but far from the 5th best in Europe. There, the Ligue 1 is much better in its entiere field, there is even no comparision possible. Portugal has only 2 teams which have the level of the 10 best french teams.
But you are right that France now even in the 2017 ranking is ahead of Russia, and it depends on paris and Lyon how thios advantage can be increased before start of the decisive season. |

| Malko, so you're saying that Reims, Toulouse and Nice are all better than Sporting Lisbon or Braga... Keep telling yourself that...
I'll grant you that a mid level french club is better than a mid level portuguese club. And it's true that Lyon (currently 3rd best french team, I'd say) won at Guimarães (currently 6th or 7th best portuguease team) in Europa League's group stage. But that happened in the final match, when Guimarães had no chance of qualifying. In Lyon, with some luck, on the second matchday, Guimarães managed to draw.
You think the french league is better than the portuguease because it is more balanced, but that's just one way to look at it. When, in the future, you have PSG and Monaco dominate like Porto and Benfica do in Portugal, it doesn't necessary mean your league is worst. The midlevel clubs didn't get worst, the best ones just got even better.
PSG is clearly better than Benfica or Porto at the moment (even though they lost at Lisbon and Oporto in the last two years, but that doesn't mean anything). But having seen them play several times this year, I can assure you Monaco are worst than those two. And I can assure you that Sporting and Braga are as good as the current Marseille or Bordeaux or Saint Etienne.
But it's true, I've mentioned four good portuguease teams and six good french teams. Perhaps that makes the french league better. But the fact is that any of those four portuguese teams has reached the quarter finals of a european competition in the last five years (Porto twice, Benfica five times in the last five years, so nine times in total). In the same period of time, you also had four teams reach QFs in Europe - PSG, Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux - but only six times in total (Lyon and PSG twice). |

PSG and Monaco will dominate, its true, but probablby Marseille too (there are some rumors that i hope come true). But the difference, Paris and Monaco will also play roles in Championsleague, while Benfica and Porto are about good Europaligue-teams, like Lyon.
Concerning Sporting, Braga, marseille, Bordfeaux.....maybe we'll have direct confrontations next year and we will see....
Reaching finals, probably the portuguese teams take Europaligue much more seriously as the french teams who regularly send the B-teams to that competition.
So, unfortunately we do not have a Lyon vs Porto or Benfica in quarterfinals, but meaybe we'll have it in semifinal :-). |

The big difference is this the CL quarters for French teams and the EL quarters for Portuguese... |

| @scapulaire24 True. Five of the six french presences in QFs were in the Champions League. And only one of the nine for portuguease clubs, with the other eight in EL. But if that's a sign that portuguease clubs are failing regurarly in CL group stage, which is true, it also shows that midlevel clubs in France aren't that good (or don't take EL seriously, but we can't be sure that, if they did, they would amount to anything...).
@Malko I'm not certain that all of Lille, Saint-Étienne, Lyon and Marseille are better than Sporting and Braga (of course they'll win in any given day, but the opposite can also be said). But even if they are, and if you add Bordeaux, and if you agree with me that after PSG and Monaco those are the best teams in France, you still only have eight. You're two short of the top ten that you were talking about... As for portuguease clubs taking europa league more seriously - in the last two rounds Benfica has made seven changes to the team that regurarly plays in the portuguease league, and it didn't stop them from eliminating PAOK and Tottenham. It shows they have depth, of course. But isn't depth one of the things that makes a good team? |
