Wow, that is a massive upset. Or is it? I thought the Bulgarian nosedive would be over by now, but it seems to be continuing. I would never have thought one of the three teams that would be seeded in Q3 would fall at Q1.
So congratulations to Hajduk Split on their unexpected elevation to the seed pot in Q3. Red Star are now the top unseed in Q3, but I don't think they'll be going anywhere. |

| 11 unseeded teams made it to the next round (29 %), same as last year, but then there were 37 instead of 38 pairs. They won 12 matches, drew 43 and lost 76, taking 29.6% of the points available. Last year they made 29.7%. The highest seeded team to drop is Levski No3 seed, followed by Videoton No5, the lowest unseeded team to make it is Prestatyn Town No35 in the unseeded section. Three teams Irtysh, Mladost and Zalgiris took the seeded status of Levski, Videoton and St. Pats in the second round respectively. Botev took the seeded status of CSKA when they replaced them in the draw. |

| Two unseeds won away in the CL 2nd round, both with 1:0, Hafnarfjordur and Shakhtar Karagandy over Ekranas and BATE respectively. Sutjeska made a 1:1 away to Sheriff, whilst Kalju and Skenderbeu held their hosts HJK and Neftchi to goalless draws and will have some advantage before the second matches. Ludogorets and Zeljeznichar will need a 1:0 win (or 2:1, 3:2 for the Bosnians) to advance. |

Fools. Barring a big turnaround, there goes their seeded all the way to the group stage privilege at the first hurdle. I haven't seen the match, but didn't they know what they had? Couldn't they have fought harder than that?
If they go out, that will put Maccabi Haifa into the seeds in Q4 on Bert's lists. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 18-07-2013, 18:37 | I knew Dila Gori would be a difficult opponent, although I didn't realise they'd taken out a Danish team last year. But even so, that just seems like a shameful scoreline, especially with what AaB had with the seeding.
Did you see the game? |

| Yeah, I also called them as one of the more difficult draws, and boy I was right... I did not see the match, but according to Danish media the game was quite even with Dila Gori being way more efficient. Aab just sold their topscorer to Aston Villa, so they are short of someone to score the goals. Not that it is a valid excuse when you are seeded all the way to the GS... |

Now, on to the rest of the unseeds with the advantage some weird results today!
2 Sparta Prague - HACKEN 2
That's a hell of a result for Hacken. Sparta Prague are the highest ranked team in trouble, 4th highest coefficient in the round.
3 KUKESI - Saraejevo 2
This Albanian club already has one seeded scalp under the belt and now they're after another one! Good for them, Albanian teams are normally useless, this is refreshing.
0 Xanthi - LINFIELD 1
Linfield normally pick up 1.000 as Northern Ireland's Champions League club. They're on the way to doing it via the Europe League.
1 HODD - Aktobe 0
As a 2nd tier Norweigian side, this is an impressive victory.
2 SKONTO - Slovan Liberec 1
This is a big surprise for me. Czech teams doing terribly!
1 Shakhtior Saligorsk - MILSAMI ORHEI 1
This is the team that are ahead of the also struggling BATE. Looks like they too are in danger.
3 OLIMPIJA LJUBLJANA - MSK Zilina 1
Here we have a 3rd seeded all the way team in trouble, to go with Sparta and AaB. It's nothing more than a mild upset though for me.
0 Goteborg - TRENCIN 0
No comment.
1 Dinamo Minsk - LOKOMOTVA 2
Damn, Belarus is having a hard time...
0 Rosenborg - ST. JOHNSTONE 1
When is the last time a Scottish team won as unseeded? It's not over, but I really hope St. Johnstone win, as they'll take Rosenborg's seeding. A fourth seeded-all-the-way team in trouble.
2 Mladost Podgorica - SENICA 2
The Montenegrin club with a borrowed coefficient have a problem. They are the underdog for me, but are the seed in this round.
2 DIFFERDANGE - Utrecht 1
Netherlands' woes continue into the new season. However, I remember Utrecht putting away Celtic 4-0 after a 2-0 loss in recent times, so I'm not going to get excited just yet.
Plenty of unseeds with the advantage then. If all 4 seeded-all-the-way sides go out, these will move into the seeded section in Bert's lists:
Hmmm. Something's changed. Feyenoord and Utrecht were in the seeded section last time I looked. They're not now. So it's...
Feyenoord Utrecht Maccabi Haifa Rapid Wien
Utrecht are also in trouble, so if they also fall, Nordsjaelland will be seeded in Bert's lists.
13/40 unseeds with the edge. |

Liberec were the better side in the first 30 minutes but after that it was a fairly even game and 2-1 was not an unfair result given how the game went. Baltic clubs do sometimes spring surprises, as they are a third of the way through their season and therefore at better levels of match fitness. Skonto also beat Hajduk Split of Croatia at home last year. However I would be very surprised if Liberec didn't go through to the next round. |

This is an improvement from last season when 4 unseeded made it through. The unseeded teams won 7, drew 6 and lost 21 matches, making 29.4% of the points, exactly as last season. The highest seeded team to get knock out were BATE, the number one 1 seed. Shakhtyor Karaganda take their seeded status in the next round. The other seeded teams eliminated are Slovan No10, HJK No14, Ekranas No15 and Neftchi No16. So more or less the top seeds made it through the next round. |

| 12 unseeded teams (30 %) made it to the 3rd round winning 18, drawing 21 and losing 41 matches, gaining 35.6 % of the points. A great improvement compared to the last season when only 6 unseeded went on, collecting 26.3 % of the points available. 9 out of the top 14 seeds crushed out (one of them Irtysh), which resulted in 8 unseeds taking the seeded status of their opponents. The highest-seeded team to be eliminated was Sparta (No4), the lowest-seeded team to advance is Breidablik (No79), which will be seeded for the next round. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 25-07-2013, 23:50 | Right, let's see what happened...
HACKEN held their advantage and took out Sparta Prague, stunning victory and coefficient steal. One seeded-all-the-way team down. They face Thun in the next round.
KUKESI were successful again, this time over Sarajevo, claiming their second seeded scalp. Metalurg Donetsk await.
Linfield failed to hold their advantage, as did Hodd.
Dila Gori finished off AaB. Second seeded-all-the-way team down. Dila Gori meet Hajduk Split.
ASTRA GIURGIU turned around a disadvantage, beating Omonia away. They steal Omonia's coefficient, and face another unseeded winner in TRENCIN, who held their advantage over Goteborg.
Skonto couldn't hold their advantage.
Debrecen had drew 2-2 at STROMSGODSET, but somehow lost 3-0 at home! The Norweigian side take a seeding in Q3 and meet Jablonec.
MILSAMI held their advantage and won on penalties. But I expect Saint-Etienne to put an end to them.
Olimpija ended up going out on away goals. And Lokomotiva threw away their win in Minsk, going out on away goals.
ST. JOHNSTONE held their nerve to eliminate a third seeded-all-the-way team. They face FC Minsk.
Say what you want about Senica, who had an advantage over borrowed coefficient Mladost Podgorica, the team with the borrowed coefficient turned it around. A glamour fixture with Sevilla awaits.
GEFLE completed an astounding turnaround, 3-0 down, to win 4-3 on aggregate and dump out a fourth seeded-all-the-way team in Anorthosis. They meet Qarabag in the next round.
BREIDABLIK came out of nowhere to beat Sturm Graz in Austria and carry on a landmark year for Icelandic football. They take on Sturm's coefficient and Aktobe in the next round. Iceland and Kazakhstan! That's a trek and a half!
Irtysh Pavlodar on a borrowed coefficient lost to SIROKI BRIJEG in a turnaround from the first leg. Udinese await...
And finally, DIFFERDANGE maintained their advantage and KOd Utrecht. I think Utrecht would have been bumped up seeded-all-the-way status, so the side from Luxembourg are now temporarily seeded, and face Tromso.
Five seeded all the way teams were dumped out, but one was a benefactor of the other four going out.
So Feyenoord, Maccabi Haifa, Rapid Wien and Nordsjaelland have all entered the Q4 seed pot in Bert's lists.
Metalurg Donetsk, Estoril and Nice are next in line. The latter two two teams on their nations base coefficient, and a consequence of Portugal holding 5th over France. |

1 SLASK - Club Brugge 0
First out of the gate, a Q4 seed is in trouble...
2 SLOVAN LIBERIC - Zurich 1
And another one.
1 AKTOBE - Breidablik 0
Icelandic team on a borrowed coefficient in trouble.
1 ZALGIRIS - Lech Poznan 0
The Lithuanians started Q1 unseeded. Got seeded in Q2 and are after their 2nd seeded scalp. Third Q4 seed in trouble.
2 KUKESI - Metalurg Donetsk 0
But even Zalgiris are overshadowed by Kukesi, the Albanian team well on their way to their third seeded scalp!
1 TROMSO - Differdange 0
Differdange are seeded in this round.
2 JABLONEC - Stromsgodset 1
The team from Norway are on a borrowed coefficient.
1 QARABAG - Gefle 0
As are the Swedish team.
2 RIJEKA - MSK Zilina 1
4th Q4 seed in trouble. But Zilina were 3-1 down in the last round after the away leg and they turned that around...
1 Hacken - THUN 2
Another team with a borrowed coefficient in trouble.
0 Estoril - HAPOEL RAMAT GAN 0
No comment.
So, 4 Q4 seeds are in trouble, let's see who will benefit if they fall in Bert's lists...
Metalurg Donetsk are next in line, but they are also in trouble. And Estoril are below them, and they too are at a dasadvantage. So below them, we have...
Nice Sheriff Tiraspol Chernomorets Odesa Vitesse Arnhem
If it all comes to pass, the seeding line will be below 10.000! Chernomorets Odesa are 9.951. Vitesse are 9.945.
It should be noted that the borrowed coefficient teams are projected to adavance in Bert's lists. Several are in trouble. |

Edited by: Michael_D at: 01-08-2013, 23:52 | Both CL qualifier and EL qualifier have an impact on seedings for EL round 4.
If we image the first leg of round 3 would be final and the losers of first game would lose both games the EL playoff seeding would be..
From CL: Partizan (17) - Ludogorets (3) 1-2 Partizan would be seeded in EL playoff.
From EL: Club Brugge (36) Slask Wroclaw (7) 0-1 Lech Poznan (23) Zalgiris Vilnius (1) 0-1 FC Zurich (16) Slovan Liberec (7) 1-2 MSK Zilina (15) NK Rijeka (4) 1-2 Metalurg Donetsk (12) - Kukesi (0) 0-2
These five teams are normaly seeded and would go out of the tournament.
That would move up to seeded: Estoril (11) Nice (11) Sheriff Tiraspol (11) Chernomorets Odessa (9)
This is not perfectly calculated as some teams have played a draw in first match and I decided to calculate the highest seeded as a winner in this calculation.
But the trend is that the seeding-line for EL-playoff will probably be lower than higher after this round. The only thing we should keep in mind is that a lot of the seeded CL-teams have away game in next round and a lot of the seeded EL-teams have home game in next round.. so things could change..
---
As FC Nordsjaelland is the lowest seeded team in El-playoff I decided to take a look on all games that decide if the seeding line will be higher or lower.
Champions League qualifers round 3: (H=Seeded play second match at home, A=Seeded play second match away)
(H) Viktoria Plzen (28) Nomme Kalju (1) 4-0 (H) Steaua Bukarest (35) Dinamo Tbilisi (5) 2-0 (A) PSV Eindhoven (64) Zulte Waregem (6) 2-0 (A) Basel (59) - Maccabi Tel Aviv (8) 1-0 (A) Austria Wien (16) FH Hafnarfjardar (4) 1-0 (A) Olympique Lyon (95) Grasshoppers (7) 1-0 (A) Dinamo Zagreb (25) Sheriff Tiraspol (11) 1-0 (A) Celtic (37) Elfsborg (8) 1-0 (H) Legia Warsawa (13) Molde (7) 1-1 (A) Apoel (35) Maribor (9) 1-1 (H) Partizan (17) - Ludogorets (3) 1-2
Seeded teams: 8 wins, 2 draws, 1 lost
Europa League qualifier round 3 (A) Swansea (16) Malmφ FF (5) 4-0 (A) Sevilla (55) Podgorica (1) 3-0 (A) Saint-Etienne (26) Milsami Orhei (2) 3-0 (H) Udinese (42) Siroki Brijeg (3) 3-1 (H) Trabsonspor (21) Dinamo Minsk (6) 1-0 (H) Rubin Kazan (58) Randers (7) 2-1 (H) Standard Liege (45) Xanthi FC (6) 2-1 (H) Maccabi Haifa (13) Ventspils (6) 0-0 (H) Hapoel Tel Aviv (29) Pandurii Targu Jiu (4) 1-1 (H) Rapid Wien (13) Asteras Tripolis (7) 1-1 (H) Stuttgart (59) Botev Plovdiv (2) 1-1 (H) Bursaspor (14) Vojvodina Novi Sad (5) 2-2 (H) Club Brugge (36) Slask Wroclaw (7) 0-1 (H) Lech Poznan (23) Zalgiris Vilnius (1) 0-1 (H) FC Zurich (16) Slovan Liberec (7) 1-2 (H) MSK Zilina (15) NK Rijeka (4) 1-2
7 wins,5 draws, 4 lost
This also signals the seeding line will be lower as more seeded teams risk going out of EL than of CL. With once again the exception that there is a big difference in seeded teams playing at home and away in CL and EL-qualifiers as you can see from this table. |

| @ Lorric Sorry but its wrong to count the teams that won vs a seeded team in Q2 as seeded in Q3. Because their opponent is higher ranked and thus favourites. Which makes Breidablik, Differdange, Strψmsgodset, Gefle and Hacken the outsiders in their games.

0 Dinamo Zagreb - AUSTRIA VIENNA 2
I had Austria Vienna down as slight favourites, but did not expect a victory in Zegreb. It would now be a shock if Zagreb were to recover.
2 SHAKHTER KARAGANDY - Celtic 0
Looks like Celtic's old away form, where they can lose to just about anyone and everyone, might be back. Toothless tiger in this match. Celtic will need their famed CL home form if they are to advance.
1 Steaua Bucharest - LEGIA WARSAW 1
This is a surprise to me. Great result in front of that huge crowd. They'll have a rabid crowd of their own for the first leg I'm sure. They could pull this off, but Steaua aren't to be counted out.
0 Lyon - REAL SOCIEDAD 2
I had Sociedad as favourite in this tie, and they're doing even better than I expected.

Only 6 out of 30 unseeds have an advantage after the first leg:
Rijeka have a goal advantage over Stuttgart. Hardly a surprise as Stuttgart have never been convincing in the recent years, although they always somehow sneaked beyond the group stage.
Slovan Liberez with a huge advantage over Udinese. I always thought that Udinese are one of the few Italian clubs, which cared about EL. Obviously not.
Tromso and Esbjerg simialar to Rijeka are a goal up against Besiktas and St Etienne respectively, but both conceded goals at home.
Kuban with a clean win over Feyenoord confirmed the Russian dominance over Holland in the EL.
Appolon will take a two-clean-goals advantage to Nice, in an attempt to save what's left from the season for Cyprus. |

I`ve seen a few minutes summary of the game and Liberec (my favourite team among the Czechs) were very, very lucky! They`ve scored extraordinarily beautiful goals, won`t happen in every game, still just counting the clear chances Udinese should have won it comfortably. Here`s the coach of Liberec`s opinion:
