So, Gibraltar, a new league + cup to watch for...

Step aside Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb. Looks like there's a new dominant team in town that makes you look tame.

Lincoln FC, won the last 6 titles. Already 10pts clear after 13 games. W12 D1. Just taking the other teams apart, a +54 GD already, handed someone a 10-0 loss. Ridiculous scores. If that dominance is maintained, they might be able to sneak a seeding in CLQ2 in later years Ekranas style, though I've no idea if they even have what it takes to get past CLQ1, no idea what level these teams are at.

There's a Manchester United in there. That would be fun if they ever met the big one, wouldn't it?

There is no information on previous seasons or editions of the Rock Cup competition. Though it does say there are three divisions and all the teams are amateur. So they may well be the weakest in Europe:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar_Football_League

But the Rock Cup has an article, but it's a tiny, worthless stub. However, there's a link there to the official site:

http://www.gibraltarfa.com/gibraltar_fa_website_003.htm

"Premier teams enter in round 2. All other 14 teams will be in draw for round 1. The first 8 teams drawn will make up the round 1 fixtures. All other teams will get a bye to round 2, where they will be in the draw with the winners of round 1 and the premier teams."

There's stuff on all their competitions there and the national side. Although the national side portion doesn't seem to work.

Here's the home page:

Just gone onto the wiki of the Gibraltar Manchester United. They were founded in 1957 and were given permission to use the name by Sir Matt Busby. They've won 7 top division titles and 3 domestic cups

Gibraltar took part in the 2006 FIFI Wild Cup in Germany. In the group stage, they won 5-0 against Tibet and achieved a 1-1 draw against the host team, Republic of St. Pauli.

They lost the semi final against North Cyprus and beat St. Pauli 3-1 in the 3rd place play-off.

FC Sankt Pauli were at that point playing 3rd level football in Germany. It is to me not clear however if that team played the FIFI cup.

If it was then i guess Gibraltar's strength is a little higher than San Marino and Andorra, placing them in a group with Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Malta and Luxembourg

It would be nice to see a cup organised between these 7 smaller UEFA nations (of course 8 teams would be better but i dont know who to invite).

Maybe add the team of Iceland?

Gibraltar also play in the Biannually island games (well, not every time though, presumably depending on travel costs), winning it in 2007

In 2011 Gibraltar won 3-0 with Faroe Islands and 3-1 with England C - they don't look like the worst team in UEFA.

It should be noted the England C team is taken from non-league sides.

But they've also played and beaten football league sides, which may be a greater achievement than beating England C.

I've read on another forum that some or most of Gibraltar's players from these unofficial matches wouldn't be eligible for the national team under UEFA/FIFA rules. So we'll just have to wait and see.

I see in wikipedia that all the players of Lincoln FC are from Gibraltar (or at least they have a flag of Gibraltar next to their name). Can this be true??

@Lorric: Lincoln FC won the last 11 titles!! They were named Newcastle United FC before.

I've read somewhere in UEFA's regulations that you need an 8 team championship (or maybe 6 team, I'm not quite sure) to participate in champions league. Gibraltar has only 6 teams in premier division. So what ?

If there is a minimum number of teams in a league I'm sure Gibraltar would just expand there 1st level to 8 teams.

@caravaj
Do you know which section of the regulation has the minimum number of teams?

Sorry Bert. I've read this some years ago in a UEFA report about european championships, I can't find it anymore, I have not downloaded it. It's only a remembrance and as nobody else - and mainly you ! - don't know it, I must have misunderstood the statement: maybe it was not a regulation but just the notice of a fact, something like "the smallest championships to participate in CL are 8-team championships" like Armenia and Andorra. As far as I've tried to find another similar statement, I've not found anything like a number of teams. We'll know more next year (if there is something to know).

Gibraltar are expanding their league to 8 teams to meet the UEFA standards:

That's interesting.

Also, from the article:

"The expansion to eight teams is to meet UEFA criteria, which states any Premier Division must contain at least seven members."

Seven members when we thought it was eight.

Liechtenstein only have seven teams right now according to wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_in_Liechtenstein

So if they really wanted to, they could have European representation if seven teams is enough. I wonder if there's any minimum number of games they have to play? If not, they could all play each other once and play in Europe, I'd be surprised if six games couldn't be fit into the season of these teams.

Last years Liechtenstein Cup:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_Liechtenstein_Cup

B and C teams making up the numbers.

I doubt UEFA will consider a 6 match season in Liechtenstein as a league as long as all teams also keep playing in the Swiss league system.
They could set up a league but have to drop out of the Swiss league system to get a CL-spot and 1 or 2 EL-spots for it I guess.

That's why I said 6 games, because I don't think they'd want to drop out of the Swiss system. It'd be somewhat akin to the Welsh clubs in the English pyramid dropping out. Not worth it and outright detrimental.

Yes, the Liechtenstein clubs will rather stay in the Swiss system then having a 50% chance on European football I guess.
