| While most nations still haven't finished last season cups, Norway have started even earlier than usual and are well underway with this seasons cup. The 2nd round (round of 64) was played last week with these results:
Strømmen(1D) – Alta(2D) 2–3 Kvik Halden(2D) – Sarpsborg 08(PL) 1–0 Follo(1D)– Bærum(2D) 1–1 (2–1 AET) Kjelsås(2D) – Stabæk(1D)3–4 Ullern(3D) – Vålerenga(PL) 1–8 Asker(2D) – Strømsgodset(PL) 2–1 Ullensaker/Kisa(1D) – Tromsdalen(2D) 2–0 Kongsvinger(1D)– Raufoss(2D) 1–1 (1–1 AET, 5–3 on penalties) Elverum(1D) – Nybergsund Trysil(2D) 1–0 HamKam(1D) – KFUM Oslo(2D) 3–1 Birkebeineren(2D) – Hønefoss(PL) 1–1 (1–1 AET, 2–4 on penalties) Sandefjord(1D)– Tønsberg(2D) 2–0 Pors(2D) – Odd(PL) 1–1 (1–2 AET) Flekkerøy(2D) – Sandnes Ulf(PL) 2–0 Egersund(2D) – Start(PL) 2–3 Bryne(1D)– Vindbjart(2D) 3–0 Vidar(2D) – Viking(PL) 0–3 Øystese(3D) – Brann(PL) 1–6 Nest Sotra(2D) – Haugesund(PL) 2–4 Åsane(2D) – Hødd(1D) 0–1 Florø – Aalesund(PL) 0–5 Træff(2D) – Sogndal(PL) 3–3 (3–3 AET, 4–5 on penalties) Strindheim(2D) – Rosenborg(PL) 0–5 Tiller(3D) – Ranheim(1D) 3–4 Harstad(2D) – Bodø/Glimt(1D) 1–1 (1–2 AET) Fløya(3D) – Tromsø(PL) 2–3 Moss(2D) – Fredrikstad(1D) 0–2 Grorud(2D) – Lillestrøm(PL) 2–2 (2–4 AET) Mjøndalen(1D) – Lyn(2D) 1–1 (2–1 AET) Vard Haugesund(1D) – Fyllingsdalen(2D) 1–0 Byåsen(2D) – Molde(PL) 1–5 Levanger(2D) – Kristiansund(1D) 2–2 (4–2 AET)
The biggest upset was last seasons silver medalist Strømsgodset getting knocked out together with 2 other premier league teams. In addition 2 1 division teams also got knocked out.
The 3rd round has been set up (not drawn) where the 13 remaining PL teams is seeded + three 1 Division teams.

Edited by: Talesin at: 07-05-2013, 16:13 | No, Norway got a really weird system where nothing is random until round 4. And even then home games is not awarded randomly either.
Its abit complicated and varies abit from year to year, but some basic rules are:
-They always look at regions and try to have unseeded teams close to seeded teams meeting eachother. Which is why Hødd is meeting Molde.
-Teams that have met the last couple of years can't meet eachother again.
- 2 division teams have this year automatically gotten a Premier League team at home.
- Home games is decided by who has most away games. Which is usually a moot point as PL teams always plays away in the first 2 rounds. While 1 division teams can get home games in round 2. If they have equally many away games, the team with longest "travel distance" gets the home game. Which is really nice if you're a team from northern Norway with miles away from the closest team.....
However sometimes they get creative due to a team not having an opponent fitting with these rules. Like Alta, the northernmost team still in the cup. Having met both Tromsø and Rosenborg the last 2 years, they instead got Hønefoss who is way down in eastern Norway, not that far from Oslo. While Tromsø got Follo who's from a place south of Oslo. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 07-05-2013, 18:32 | Thanks for the information. Interesting stuff. For the most part it probably works out well, but doesn't that suck for Alta that 2 out of every 3 years they're going to get fed to 2 of Norway's best teams? |
Author: Talesin
Date: 07-05-2013, 18:56
| They relegated from 1 division last year, so while they were in 1 division they actually had 2 years in a row where they met the other northern 1 division team Bodø/Glimt and then Ranheim (Rosenborg's little brother) the year after.
As those 4 is the only middle and northward teams in PL/1D in Norway and they've played them all the last 3 years, thats probably why they got first Strømmen (situated east of Oslo) and now Hønefoss. To break the cycle and give them something new to play.
Tromsø was also relieved getting something new as they also get stuck in this cycle. But they do get compensated due to longer traveling distance, which gives them higher chance for a home game. |

| 3rd round of the norwegian cup was played on wednesday and thursday.
Wednesday: Bodø/Glimt(1D) - Elverum(1D) 2-0 Levanger(2D) - Rosenborg(PL) 1-4 Asker(2D) - Vålerenga(PL) 2-3 Brann(PL) - Mjøndalen(1D) 1-2 Hødd(1D) - Molde(PL) 1-1 (2-2 aet, 4-5 apk) Kvik Halden (2D) - Lillestrøm(PL) 0-2 Odd(PL) - Sandefjord(1D) 2-0 Alta(2D) - Hønefoss(PL) 2-1 Sogndal(PL) - Ullensaker/Kisa(1D) 4-3 Tromsø(PL) - Follo(1D) 3-1 Vard Haugesund(2D) - Haugesund(PL) 2-5 Viking(PL) - Bryne(1D) 2-4 Ranheim(1D) - Ålesund(PL) 2-2 (4-2 aet)
Thursday: Stabæk(1D) - Fredrikstad(1D) 3-1 Flekkerøy(2D) - Start(PL) 1-2 Kongsvinger(1D) - Hamkam(1D) 0-1

| Not really a huge accomplishment from Alta as Hønefoss have had a nightmare month when it comes to injuries. Several key players was out, including their toppscorer who got injured last league game. And it continued in that game as Hønefoss got a player knocked unconcious, who had to be sent to the hospital, in addition to yet another injury on a second player.
Still, its a good run getting this far as a second division team. |

There are 2 ways to qualifiy for the Dutch Cup: 1) via the league (all 1st and 2nd level teams and the top 12 of each 3rd level qualify) 2) via the 6 regional amateur cups in which all teams from level 3 and below can participate (best 4 of each of these that haven't qualified yet via the league qualify)
Volkel from the 8th level had a good Cup run in their regional Cup and even reached the final. The beat some 6th level teams and a 4th level team. |

Achilles'29 got a special status for 2 years. Since 2 2nd level teams went bankrupt during last season (AGOVV and Veendam) and no 3rd level team were interested in promotion with the regular terms, the KNVB had a problem. They didn't want to play the 2nd level with just 16 teams, so they invited both 3rd level champions (Katwijk and Achilles'29) and 2 reserve teams (Ajax 2 and FC Twente 2) to join the 2nd level at special terms. Achilles'29 accepted that while Katwijk declined. They were replaced by a 3rd reserve team (PSV 2) to bring the 2nd level to 20 teams next season.
Achilles'29 already beat some 2nd level teams in the Cup last seasons (Telstar and MVV in 2011/12). In 2010/11 they even beat 1st level Heracles Almelo. So with some reinforcements I think they will have a good team in the 2nd level and won't be at the bottom of the table. |

| Thanks a lot for the response! So, even if they perform worse than the reserve teams, they might not even have to face relegation since 3rd level teams choose to decline promotion more often than not. So, it seems like a pretty nice deal for Achilles as long as they avoid incurring debts like Haarlem and Co. did. |

In 2014 and 2015 promotion to the 2nd level still isn't mandatory, and there might even be no promotion at all even if a club can meet the licence criteria (that isn't completely clear yet). The plan is that from 2016 onwards promotion will become mandatory, so from that year there will also be relegation from the 2nd level. |

| Belgian cup starts in the last weekend of july. Round 1 and 2 are for teams from level 4 to 8. If they hope to meet a top level team, they have a tough course since those 16 teams of the first devision enter only in round 6!
In Belgium too teams from level 5 on can qualify after a regional cup. That way up to 280 teams participate in the national cup.
The level 7 team where I spend a little of my time, Erps Kwerps, managed to reach the national cup 1st round this year. Only 12 games to Europe! |
