Edited by: Lorric at: 07-03-2013, 14:47 | This stage of the competition is almost as bad as the quarter finals of international tournaments for the English national team.
Looking back, last year the two Manchester clubs fell at this stage last year, United to Bilbao, and City to Sporting. The year before that Manchester City and Liverpool fell at the last 16 to Dynamo Kiev and Braga. The year before that though, Fulham defeated Juventus and Liverpool defeated Lille. The year before that was the UEFA Cup. I'll keep going to complete the 5 year cycle. Manchester City defeated Aalborg. But the final year was the type of carnage I don't want replicated this year, the last time England had 3 teams at this stage, and they all fell. Bolton lost to Sporting, Everton lost to Fiorentina, and Tottenham lost to PSV.
So in the last 5 years, 3 English teams have advanced and 7 have fallen. The 5 year record can't get any worse, as those three failures 5 years ago will be replaced by 3 new failures if they all lose, but the last 16 is carnage for English clubs. |

| Just for my own curiosity, I decided to go back 5 more years.
06/07, 1 each. Newcastle lost to AZ Alkmaar, Tottenham defeated Braga.
05/06, Middlesbrough defeated Roma.
04/05, Sporting defeated Middlesbrough, Newcastle crushed Olympiakos 7-1.
03/04, Newcastle again crushed a team 7-1, this time Mallorca. I'd love to see this replicated again this year! Liverpool lost to Marseille.
02/03, Liverpool defeated Auxerre.
Hmmm. 5-3 to England. Didn't expect that. So 10-8 over the last 10 years.
Sporting, damn you Sporting! Took out 3 teams! |

| Well, it does not seem so bad for English clubs this season.. Newcastle showed they can progress against Anzhi, Totthenham were fabulous against Inter and Chelsea lost against Steaua, although I think they will advance with a larger win in England. |

| Tottenham will go through unless something extraordinary happens. With home advantage I would expect Chelsea and Newcastle to both qualify too |

| Chelsea's fixture list is all screwed up. They might throw the Europa under the bus. |

| That's the problem with the English and Scottish overcrowded schedule. If a club gets far in both Europe and national Cup(s) with replays, there is not enough room for all the matches. |

| With the replay now scheduled for 1 April (yes, really) that means Chelsea may have to play 4 games in about 9 days! |

| I've heard it could be 4 games in 8. |

| Tottenham manage to lose and go through, a reverse of Arsenal yesterday. Chelsea and Newcastle both win on the night. Certainly helps England's ranking, especially with the last German side standing (Stuttgart) going out |

| If Tottenham reach the semis they will rank above ManCity for next season, so that ManCity will almost certainly be the fourth rated English entrant in the Champions' League.
With the domestic leagues approaching completion it seems very likely that ManCity will rank somewhere between 17 and 21 in the competition. So unless there are upsets in the Q4NC ties they are headed for Pot 3. |

| So, England secure the 2nd spot against Germany at least for this year. However, it's still disappointing that no English teams left in Cl quarters, such an unexpected situation ( Although ManU was just out due to Nani's stupidity) |

| If the CL has an all-German final could they still take second place from England? |

| No. If both German clubs win both legs of their QFs and SFs they will gain a further 22 points. Divided by 7 participating clubs, this will increase their points total from 106.5 to 128.5 increasing this season's coefficient from 15.214 to 18.357. Currently the German coefficient is 4.206 below the English one, so the gap cannot be closed. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 17-03-2013, 21:28 | I'd like to see England beat Germany's seasonal coefficient this year. I remember someone talking like it was already done (Germany beating England's yearly coefficient) a while back. I don't remember who it was. But now that gap has closed down to about 0.650 in Germany's favour, and England has 3 clubs vs. Germany's 2. England needs to collect 5 more points than Germany to overtake.
The roles have reversed. Germany used to collect more points in the EL, while England claimed more in the CL. Now it's the other way around this year. |
