Edited by: Lorric at: 01-03-2013, 11:50 | Every year for I don't know how long, Giggs is put on a 1 year contract and then has to earn himself a new one at Manchester United, and every year he does so, and has done so again:

This machine, this cyborg, is now sure to be at Manchester United at the age of 40, and still shows no signs of slowing down. Next season will be his 24th season playing at the very top level.
Paolo Maldini, the legendary defender who like Giggs spent his entire career at one of the World's elite clubs in AC Milan, lasted 25 seasons. Maldini retired at the age of 41. However, he was less than a month from his 42nd birthday.
Can Giggs equal or even surpass Maldini? What do you think? This is the first time I've thought it can truly be considered now that he's lasted this long and doesn't look like he's going to be stopping any time soon. |

| Looking at club appearances Giggs has already surpassed Maldini 931-902. In terms of overall career appearances Maldini made 1,028 and Giggs' next appearance, quite possibly tomorrow, will be his 1,000th |

Edited by: seso at: 04-03-2013, 09:32 | This is the official count for Giggs: - Premier League: 612 (inc 100 as substitute) - Division One (pre-1992; before the EPL was created): 40 (inc 7 as sub) - FA Cup: 73 (inc 11 as sub) - League Cup: 39 (inc 6 as sub) - European Cup/Champions League: 143 (inc 22 as sub) - European Cup Winners' Cup: 1 - Uefa Cup: 5 - Other matches (Charity/Community Shield, European Super Cup, Fifa Club World Cup): 18 (inc 15 as sub)
Two nice notes: Giggs has never received a red card during his club career, although he was once sent off for Wales, against Norway in September 2001. Alessandro Del Piero said "Only two players made me cry when watching football, one was Diego Maradona and the other Ryan Giggs". |

| 631 matches for Manchester United 64 matches for Wales 4 matches for Great Britain
As he didn't play at the weekend it looks like Giggs' 1000th game will come against Real Madrid tomorrow night, which seems fitting |

Edited by: Lorric at: 04-03-2013, 10:49 | I wondered if they might do that. Save it for the big match. I saw something on the BBC website, Ferguson confirming Giggs will play against Madrid. I didn't check it, but I saw the headline.
I wondered if Hodgson might do it for Gerrard and Cole, but there's enough pressure playing for England, so maybe it was right just to cap them both for the 100th time in friendlies. Plus, maybe it wouldn't be right to hold them back from earning caps until the big game with Montenegro, our new mini-rivals. |
