1 Norwich - Aston Villa 4 1 Bradford City (4) - Arsenal 1 Bradford City win 3-2 on penalties
So the fairytale continues. Tier 4 team in the semis. Arsenal had their full first team out. Here's a stat for you, that was Bradford City's 9th straight shootout win.
To come:
Tomorrow:
Swansea - Middlesbrough (2)
Next week:
Leeds United (2) - Chelsea
The cup is Chelsea's to lose. If they do lose, England will have an unusual team in Europe next year. Well, unless it's Villa, but they're nowhere near good enough now to qualify by normal means. |

According to Soccerway AS Roma qualified to the next round (1/4 final) of Coppa Italia.1/8 Final: AS Roma - Atalanta: 3 - 0 Just in case someone wonders about, Atalanta (founded in 1907) is the main football club of the city of Bergamo (northern Italy), and takes its name from a character in Greek mythology, a female athlete.

| With the Swansea win in the 1/4 finals of the League Cup, now there is a 33% chance (excluding Bradford) of a Welsh team qualifing for european football through the English FA. Cardiff were close several years ago but lost the FA Cup final. now I hope Swansea will make it. |

Oh! It's THIS can of worms again! Let the debate begin!
Personally, I see them as Welsh clubs ashamed of being Welsh. They got so mesmerized by the English money that they now renegade their origin. I really don't see why anyone would cheer to see them in Europe. They rejected their homeland in favour of filling their pockets. If the English (and the rest of UK) are not bothered by that, fine, it's their own business. But when it comes to EuroCups, I say no! I don't like 'hybrids'. Choose a side for good (move to England physically or switch to Welsh PL) or don't bother me with your presence. |

| Well, we in Bosnia and Herzegovina have a similar problem, not exactly the same, but similar. Although the clubs play for Bosnia and Herzegovina and gain points for it, they do that mostly because they MUST play for this country because they can't play for Serbia or Croatia, although they would want it. I mean, I don't really care, but an eg. Zrinjski (who have great chances to qualify for the EL QR) has HŠK as prefix which means "Croatian Sport Club" but they play for B&H.
For me, it is logical because it is a club made by one of the constitutional nations in B&H (Croats) but there are a lot people here who looks at that club as one who is against the whole B&H and who only wants harm to us. I mean, why would they want to harm a country and league in which they play? |

Edited by: Lorric at: 14-12-2012, 21:12 | On the Welsh thing, Swansea will be treated as English. They will be in Europe representing England if they take the cup.
Swansea I would be curious to see in the Europa League, though I might well prefer Chelsea to just take the cup, I'm not sure, but I've heard talk that Swansea's style would fit really well for European football, and they're also the solid mid-table EPL team that is just perfect for this competition, as they will likely take it seriously.
Normally I've been against the Welsh thing, but Swansea I see as possibly a kind of means to an end, since they play good football, and people are always banging on about technical ability and the lack of it in English players, so if they're getting English players in their squad and improving their technical ability, I'm all for a strong and successful Swansea, providing they have a batch of English players in their squad. They have some right now, along with a load of Welsh lads and a few Spanish:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swansea_City_A.F.C.
If Chelsea drop out though, I'll openly root for Swansea. Villa are a side that are a shadow of the team that embarrassed England in Europe for three seasons, and the only other alternatives would be a League two club or a Championship club in Leeds should Chelsea fall. If it isn't Chelsea or Swansea, it's probably a waste of a spot.
I hope Chelsea and Swansea don't meet in the semis. |

Edited by: Forza-AZ at: 20-12-2012, 16:39 | I don't know if there was any seeding for the draw of the French Cup, allthough the Ligue 1 clubs don't play each other, so it might be that the 20 Ligue 1 clubs were seeded. The rest seems an open draw.
Last year teams from Ligue 1 played each other in this round. Either a seeding has been new this year, or there was no seeding and by chance all 20 Ligue 1 teams avoided each other. I think it is the last as in the official draw the Ligue 1 teams are not listed in the 20 top matches. |

this is an interesting website regarding your question. I don't see many 4th tier teams in Finals.
France 99/00: Nantes beats Calais (4) in the final. Nantes is qualified to UEFA cup as Cup winners
so i guess that leaves only clubs from Liechtenstein (playing in Swiss league but having their own cup) and Wales (playing in English league, but they were able to qualify via Welsh cup) |

yes the rules clearly state that if 2 teams from the same town play at home in the same round one game has to be reversed. the team ranked lower(from previous season) gets its game reversed. roma went to court to ask the judges their "interpretation" of the rule, since the games are not scheduled on the same day. thursday the court said it's not their place to "interpret" the cup rules set by the italian fa and undersigned by all the teams partecipating. so the game will be played in florence. *the same rule is in the european cups.* the only difference is that, in the last few years, uefa allowed 2 teams from the same town to play at home one day apart in the champions league. inter and milan had to switch couple of times in the early 2000s but lately they were allowed to play one day apart(or one week apart if it's the cl 1/8th). i guess the coppa italia(and the italian fa) didn't catch up to uefa "interpretations" yet. |

No, only the winner of the League Cup gets a EL-ticket. If the winner already qualified for CL, then the EL-ticket goes to the next team in the league. |

@SirHenri Weird stuff, that's gonna be a longer ban I guess
Just my 2 cents on this Hazard ban case.
From videos and pictures I saw, it is hard to judge how violent Hazard was: was he trying to kick the ball to free it up and kicked the boy by accident, or he intentionally kicked the 17yo ball boy?
I'm not trying to defend anyone, surely Hazard wasn't elegant at all in both cases, but the intentionality to hit the boy here would make a big difference IMHO.
Then I wonder if the ball boy: (a) naturally went to the ground, or intentionally dived; (b) had problems to free up the ball quicker, or he was shielding it from Hazard; (c) was hurt by Hazard kick and feeling pain, or he was just dramatizing the episode trying to waste time.
In any case, if the kick was intentionally directed to the boy ribs nothing changes, Hazard attitude would be violent, so that's enough for him to be guilty, and he could likely and deservedly get a long ban. But, in the case the ball boy was, in any possible way, intentionally acting in order to waste time, then, from a fair play point of view, his was a bad example too IMHO.
@Lorric: what people say about it over there in England?

| @Lorric (OT) Not even a majority opinion! This is why, even if I would welcome an electronic Goal/NoGoal sensor in football, I think Instant Replay for referee would be, in the majority of the cases, just a waste of time which wouldn't help the referees that much: TV images are not always from the best angle, and they are 2D, which is a big limit to judge this kind of issues. I wonder now what the FA judge will decide.

| Got to root for the winner of the Man U/Chelsea tie, Man City and Everton. If they don't cut the other teams out of the picture, England will have either one of three Championship sides in Europe next year, or potentially a fourth in relegation candidates Wigan. Even if Wigan stay up, they'll likely prioritise survival over the Europa League. Glad Chelsea put away yet another Championship side in Middlesbrough last night and Everton disposed of League One Oldham the night before. I'm fine with any stable, secure EPL team going into Europe, but none of these sides will be good for the coefficient. |

| Final, Copa del Rey:
17, 18, or 19 May: Real Madrid-Atlético de Madrid
Date is up in the air because the planned hour on 18 May coincides with the festival of Eurovision. The FEF (Federación Espańola de Fútbol) prefers 19 May.
Venue is undecided. Cerezo, President of Atleti, says that Real and Atleti have the agreement that if the two Madrid teams coincide in the Final, the venue will rotate between the Bernabéu and the Calderón. Since the last time (1992) they played in the Bernabéu, this time they should play in the Calderón. So far, Cerezo seems to be the only one saying this.
So far, there have been four Cup Finals between the two, three in the Bernabéu--all won by Atleti, and one in the Calderón, won by Real--go figure! Atleti won in 1960 and 1961; Real won in 1975; Atleti won most recently--in 1992.
The first two were before my time as a fútbol fan (I didn't know fútbol existed; I was 14 years old); the 1992 Final was during the time when it was very hard to follow European fútbol from the USA. In 1975, I lived in Barcelona at the time of the Final; my brother was visiting. We went to a bar to watch; part-way through the game, the electricity went out in the whole neighborhood; we madly ran through the streets to find a bar in the nearest neighborhood with electricity. And so we were able--barely--to witness the only penalty shootout in a Cup Final between the two Madrid giants--won 4-3 by Real.
Real's desire to play in the Camp Nou is so far being treated as a joke, an attempt at "oneupsmanship" against Barça.
This confirms that the seventh team in the Liga will play in Europe next season--at the moment, that's Betis. If Málaga's expulsion from Europe is confirmed, the eighth team in the Liga will also play in Europe--right now, that's . . . Rayo. But I have few illusions of their being that high when the season ends--especially after watching their last two games. |

If AZ lose the Cup final they will only qualify for EL when PSV qualifies for CL (so 1st or 2nd in the league). That isn't certain at all yet. They are 1st right now, but only 2 points ahead of Ajax, 3 points ahead of Feyenoord and 5 points ahead of Vitesse.
I hope they get 1st or 2nd place. Also a spicy thing: AZ still plays PSV in the league (matchday 31). It might be good for us to let PSV win if we are already save from relegation. |

It's always like this in B&H. We play the quarter-finals in November and then we wait for the winter break to pass to make the draws for semi-finals.
Regarding Montenegro, I know that they make the draw for their cup very late compared to others. Last year that was at 20 March, the year before they even waited for 04 April. I searched for you, but I couldn't find a confirmed date for draws of the semi-finals over there, but I guess it will not be sooner then 20 March.
For Slovenia, the draw will take part today (8 March). |

Final of the Copa del Rey:
Friday, 17 May @ 21:30 in the Santiago Bernabéu!
The larger capacity of the Bernabéu was apparently the deciding factor; 35,000 tickets will be reserved for fans of each team.
Atleti has won all the Cup Finals vs Real Madrid held in the Bernabéu (three of them). |

Semi Final Draw
Wigan vs Millwall (2) or Blackburn (2) Manchester United or Chelsea vs Manchester City
Disaster. Either a Championship team or maybe a Championship team even if Wigan win will be in Europe next season. Wigan are 3pts adrift from survival currently. Millwall and Blackburn are 16th and 17th in the Championship.
Only one way out now. Root for Chelsea in the FA Cup and Chelsea's opponents in the League. If Chelsea drop out of the top 4 and win the FA Cup this ridiculous situation can be saved.
EDIT: Two English cup finals this year then with a very heavy favourite and a massive underdog.
I can at least root for that underdog in the final if the unlikely Chelsea scenario doesn't happen, so the underdog will skip the qualifiers and will at least get 6 games to scrape together some points. If they don't take the cup that underdog will have to get through two qualifying rounds.
Stop rubbing your hands with glee, you Germans! This isn't fair... |

Edited by: Lorric at: 11-03-2013, 00:54 | Not Millwall. They have arguably the worst fans in England.
I would hope for Wigan to avoid relegation, and make a good start to the domestic season. They would probably give it a go at the start of the season, and then if they did well enough, make a go of the competition. Got to take 18th in the Premiership over 17th in the Championship. Blackburn are in something of a slump, and they could regress further. But rather them than Millwall. Hope Blackburn win their quarter final now that they have secured a home replay. |

Would give everything if Željezničar would be paired against them in Europe League play-off (if we get that far). Not because I would think that we can win against them (even beating them would be a hard job for us), but because I would love to see their fans live on a stadium. |

I hope they`ll also avoid relegation just like in the past few years. They destroyed Everton in 4 minutes, so it`s not just good luck that brings them here, although the draw was very kind! |

| First leg of semifinals of Bosnia and Herzegovina football cup:
15:00 Sloga (II) 2-4 Široki Brijeg (I) 18:00 Željezničar (I) 0-0 Zrinjski (I)
The second leg will be played on 3 April, but we can almost say for sure that Široki Brijeg is already in the finals while it will be a intense match in Mostar between Zrinjski and Željezničar for the second spot. Željezničar has played the first 3 matches of the second half season very bad, it is obvious that we are still not in form but I hope we will get in it until April.
Also an interesting note, this was the 33rd match in row in the cup that Željezničar didn't lost a game in it. The last time we lost in cup was in September 2008 in round of 32 against Zvijezda in Gradačac. Since then we reached the final all three times, won it twice (2011 and 2012) while we lost the final on away goal rule in 2010. |
