After tonight matches:CL Pld Won Drw Lst Pts/Max Pts% GER 17 10 6 1 26/34 76.5 (was 76.7) - SPA 22 13 6 3 32/44 72.7 (was 72.5) + ITA 11 4 5 2 13/22 59.1 (was 65.0) - ENG 22 9 5 8 23/44 52.3 (was 57.5) - POR 16 7 2 7 16/32 50.0 (was 53.3) - FRA 17 6 2 9 14/34 41.2 (was 36.7) + Top6 105 49 26 30 124/210 59.0 (was 60.5) - Few facts:
- PSG made 15 points, no team can do better, and only Barca and Man Utd at 12 can equalize; Borussia with 14 points is surely at least the 4th best.
- Real scored 15 goals, ahead of PSG, with 14. Shakhtar scored 12 and needs 3 more goals to equalize, Barca and Man Utd scored 11 so far.
- PSG conceded only 3 goals, the less beaten defense of the CLGS for sure.
- With a 94th minute penalty goal in the last game, Dinamo Zagreb avoided finishing with 0 points and 0 goal scored, so avoiding having 0-0-6 clubs in CL this season.
- With 13 Top 6 clubs sure of CL 1/8 of final (one of them will be Juventus or Chelsea), and a 14th club, Benfica, than still can hope, Top 6 countries toke more than 3/4 of the CL KO rounds qualified clubs.
Cheers!

not really an exceptional archievement, though... since the 2nd round has become a knock out round again, last seasons 12 of 16 (exactly 3/4) was the lowest number of top 6 clubs in it. If I'm not mistaken, every other season it was 13-15 top 6 clubs. |

| @Cirdan Yes, of course. It was just a (useless) statistical note. |

CL Pld Won Drw Lst Pts/Max Pts% GER 18 11 6 1 28/36 77.8 (was 76.5) + SPA 24 14 7 3 35/48 72.9 (was 72.7) + ITA 12 5 5 2 15/24 62.5 (was 59.1) + ENG 24 10 5 9 25/48 52.1 (was 52.3) - POR 18 7 3 8 17/36 47.2 (was 50.0) - FRA 18 6 2 10 14/36 38.9 (was 41.2) - Top6 114 53 28 33 134/228 58.8 (was 59.0) -
So 58.8% of the max. possible points gained: (13/16) 81.25% of the CL KOs spots.
In the beginning of the CLGS were from Top 6 countries: (19/32) 59.38% of the CL GS spots.
Qualified to the CL KOs: (13/19) 68,4% of the Top 6 countries clubs into the CL GS.
:. Positive:
- Germany*, with 77.8% of points earned, and (3/3) 100% of clubs qualified to the CL GS.
- Spain, with 72.9% of points earned, and (4/4) 100% of clubs qualified to the CL GS.
- Italy*, with 62.5% of points earned, and (2/2) 100% of clubs qualified to the CL GS.
*(it has to be said that Germany and Italy lost their weakest club already into the CL QRs).
:. Pretty disappointing:
- England, with only 52.1% of points earned, and (2/4) 50% of clubs qualified to the CL GS.
- Portugal, with only 47.2% of points earned, and (1/3) 33.3% of clubs qualified to the CL GS.
- France, with only 38.9% of points earned, and (1/3) 33.3% of clubs qualified to the CL GS. I hope everything is correct. Thanks for reading.
I watched Celtic - Spartak tonight, it was pretty good. Not exceptional, but big pathos, nice atmosphere, full stadium. Entertaining for 95' for sure (at least IMHO).
Cheers!

Edited by: Lorric at: 07-12-2012, 02:06 | Here's a top 6 stat for you. Pot B in the Europa League is loaded with top 6 sides. Well, top 4 actually.
Pot A - 7/16 Chelsea Liverpool Hannover 96 Lazio Lyon Bordeaux Benfica
ENG 2, SPA 0, GER 1, ITA 1, FRA 2, POR 1
Pot B - 9/16 Tottenham Newcastle Atletico Madrid Levante Monchengladbach Bayer Leverkusen Stuttgart Napoli Inter Milan
ENG 2, SPA 2, GER 3, ITA 2, FRA 0, POR 0
I believe this is the first time England have had 4 teams in the Europa League.
Pot B looks tougher than Pot A on paper to me. I'd still rather be in Pot A though for the second leg at home. |

- This doesn't take into considerations QR matches; besides that it (kind of) reflects UEFA coefficients, but expressed in % of the maximum points possible (including bonuses).
- Clubs playing in both CL and EL in the same season, will add stats in the CL table when playing in CL, and will add stats in the EL table when playing in EL. Missing Bonus Points since failing a CL next stage qualification will always be counted in CL stats*.
*(for that stage only: for example Germany conquered only 12/16 (75%) of CLGS qualification bonuses, but 15/15 (100%), and not 15/20 (75%), of CL KOs qualification bonuses (and about the same is true for Italy), since after missing the CL qualification Bayer Moenchengladbach (as Udinese) is considered as an EL club, adding stats in the EL table and not influencing the CL one. This is the best solution I could find to separate EL and CL stats when a club is involved in both the competitions in the same season: Chelsea for example will from now on add its stats for England in the EL table).
- Since the last European match of the season for Sporting will be played today, Portugal stats will change a bit tonight.
I hope everything is correct, in case of errors, please let me know! Thanks!
Cheers!

Uhm... interesting to note that no matter Lille and Montpellier poor results, PSG, Lille and Bordeaux allowed so far France to be better than its average.
Just a question: what is the average of clubs qualifyed for KOs (EL+CL) for France in the last seasons?
If it is about 3 we should expect a positive season from France (compared to its average); while if it is around 4 (my guess), to have a positive season for France those 3 need to perform well enough to gain at least as many points 4 clubs usually do.

Edited by: SirHenri at: 08-12-2012, 08:49 | I counted for France in the last 5 years :
3/7 in 2007/8 3/6 in 2008/9 4/6 in 2009/10 4/6 in 2010/11 2/6 in 2011/12
that makes 16/31 overall, that's 51,6 %
or in absolute numbers : 16 teams in 5 years, tha't 3,2 in average
So atm they are in both statistic slightly worse than their average, but the teams still performed better.
I have flob's numbers from above included with bonus points for the last 3 years before winterbreak :
11.000 in 2009/10 9,750 in 2010/11 9,666 in 2011/12
That's 10,139 in average
So we can say, France is performing very close to its average, but as if they have no great records in spring over the last years except 2009/10, they could easily get at least their 2nd best season, if the 3 remaining teams win some more matches. |

I find that especially the {P}* tag and the {URL=}* tag are very useful to format the text and add links.

| This is indeed a fair point, and Liverpool are also unable to field certain players in the Europa League. But the shot stats for that match are insane. I think there is something to take from it. I still think Zenit are the strong favourites, but it's given me some hope Liverpool can turn it around. Has to be quite the confidence booster if nothing else. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 22-02-2013, 01:05 | Great night tonight for me watching all that, stirring stuff, good football, last minute beautiful goal for Tottenham, Chelsea win the tie with the last kick of the game against a surprisingly good Sparta, Newcastle dispose of Metalist, should have won the first leg too, but for a bogus offside flag cutting off a perfectly good goal, Metalist were a real disappointment. And while Liverpool fell short, they were magnificent. Zenit actually played well, but Liverpool were just that damn good on the night that they dominated large swathes of the match with relentless pressure and a super high tempo. I actually gained some respect for Zenit, they didn't switch off after they scored their away goal and met Liverpool head on and battled for every inch the whole match even though they were being overmatched, unlike Lyon, who tried to just bleed the game to death in the 2nd half, total lack of balls by them, and they got punished for it in glorious fashion, when they actually competed well with Tottenham in the 1st half. They'd probably have gone through if they'd just have continued playing normally. Shameful display in front of their home fans, looked like they wanted to win with the minimum of effort in the 2nd half. Lazy Lyon. I'd be pissed off big time if I was a Lyon fan with that.
I also tuned in for the Steaua match's extra time. That stadium was rocking, tremendous atmosphere, those fans wanted it so so much, and they got it. It will be interesting seeing Chelsea step into that place... |

I'm furious, surprised how much, I wonder how the Man U fan mjohnson1989 feels. I've been wanting to see this match for years and years and I was so confident United were the superior side, and they were proving it until that referee destroyed the game and handed Madrid victory on a silver platter.
Whoever draws Madrid in the quarters is lucky. They've got a weaker opponent than they should have. |

| Wow, even Mourinho said the best team lost. At first I thought that was unusual for him, but when you think about it, this would have been one of the biggest wins of a glittering career for him if he'd pulled it off, but it's just an empty win now. They're in the next round, but the ref took that away from him. |

About that red card. It was a close call. I say it merits a red. The think that bothers me is that all 50-50 decisions in European cups are in Mourinho's favor, no matter what team he coaches. This guy has unbelievable luck. About the game. Manchester have only themselves to blame. If you have a cowardly game-plan and only start to play in the 70th minute, when you need two goals, then you cannot seriously bring out excuses like that. You cannot claim that you are the better team when you have an underdog attitude on the pitch. It was a balanced tie and the braver team advanced. Oh, and Real had a penalty not given. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 06-03-2013, 10:55 | I think part of the reason I was so invested, aside from it's a match I've personally wanted to see for years, and the obvious English interest, is I've seen a lot of people running down the Premier League (not on here). Now they'll be able to say it's shit and can't even put one team in the CL quarter finals.
Oh well. Go Beckham! I can still have an interest in the competition as long as he's around! (Providing PSG field him, of course.)
Cowardly? They were the only team testing the opposition goalkeeper! De Gea didn't have a save to make worthy of the name before the card, while his opposite number had several. They were significantly the better team until the card.
EDIT: I've seen some of this talk about Mourinho, but I don't buy it. He doesn't need to play mind games when he's already won. I've also seen some talk about him potentially angling for the United job in the future. I don't buy that either, because he's a bad fit for United. United, a team that's had the same manager for decades, I can't see taking on a man who gets bored of his clubs after a short period there and goes off to seek new challenges. They'll want a man who can build a long term project with them over a long period. |

I will watch and if Arsenal score a goal fairly early things will become interesting, but I just can't see it, Bayern dominated them at home, and I don't think Arsenal have anything more to offer. I don't want Italy to beat England. I don't like Serie a, though I don't have as much of a problem with it as I used to. Tottenham can get rid of Inter and help this along.

By the way, after ManU-Real all the referees and ex-referees that were interviewed said - quoting from the rule book - that Nani was correctly booked. In fact, Real deserved a penalty and another Manchester elimination at Raphael's hand-ball. It's sad, but that's reality. I was rooting for United too, I hate Mourinho's Real.

Nani wasn't booked, he was sent off.

Do not compare me to that troll.
I have nothing against the two Spain clubs here, since neither cheated, but it's galling to see the two teams which are constantly jammed down my throat as the best in the World scraping through thanks to referee help.
The result itself with Barcelona is a good one from an English standpoint, with Germany threatening to take second and Italy beating England in this season's coefficient. |

| Admittedly I'm not in the least disinterested, but having watched the so-called "offside" on Messi's second goal, well . . . maybe there's a "take" that shows something different from what I've seen (uefa.com, as.com and marca.com) but there is nothing resembling an offside in any action shot (marca's is a reconstruction and not an actual live video). I have seen a "still" that shows Messi perhaps offside, but the perspective, from behind Messi, makes any determination impossible. These "offsides" that take three or four camera angles to capture--is it any wonder that "errors" are made on the field? If it's too hard to call, decision to offense and NO offside.
I thought the issue was really Boateng's penalty whine--each team had one penalty whine, so that's a tie (of sorts). |

Oops, I`ve misread your line. I thought if the second goal is offside than your sentence should end ``stayed 1:0``, instead of ``stayed 2:0`` and consequently assumed you`re talking about Villa`s (the third) goal. Yes, Messi`s second goal is offside, you`re right. |

Edited by: Lorric at: 05-04-2013, 00:10 | Well I ended up watching Tottenham/Basel and Benfica/Newcastle. A mixed bag of results in the end, a win, a draw and a loss.
But the thing that really annoys me is what happened to Gareth Bale right at the end of the match. No blame to the Basel player, but he stepped on Bale's foot, and Bale's foot ended up being turned at a repulsive angle and he was stretchered off, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's the end of his season. And if it is, there's a very good chance Tottenham will drop out of the top 4 as well as the Europa League. The commentators said Tottenham haven't won a game without Bale scoring since New Years day. This is not the message that needs to be sent, damn it! I know it's a risk, but people will be laughing saying Tottenham were stupid playing their best players in a "mickey mouse" cup when they're chasing Champions League, and this is not what Tottenham deserve for treating this competition seriously from the start, and will other English teams take it seriously after this if the injury is serious and Tottenham lose the CL because of it? |

| I think Tottenham still can win in Basel even without Bale, but it`s quite difficult now. If they lose Bale for the remainder of the season, I`m very afraid Arsenal will squeeze them out from 4th place again. I`ve made some calculations for myself and both Arsenal and Tottenham ended up on 71 points. Unless a Chelsea collapse happening (I expect Chelsea to collect 74 points) it`ll be between Arsenal & Tottenham. And then the anti EL chorus will start: ``we`ve told you so...`` |

Lazio's appearance in the ELQF is the furthest an Italian team has progressed in the EL era.
Last year, Udinese was the last to fall in Round 4, the year before, only Napoli got to Round 3 and lost there. And the year before that, Juventus lost in Round 4 to the stunning comeback of Fulham.
Just thought I'd mention it. Even though the Italians don't take the competition seriously, I was still initially surprised by that. |

Otherwise germany has a chance to overtake them, but they would need 8 out if 10 points and an all-german-final.
