| FIFA has threatened the swiss federation with suspension if by january 13th they don't inforce penalties on Sion.
"Should this deadline not be respected, the Swiss FA will be automatically suspended from January 14, 2012 onwards", a statement said.
If that happens, Basel won't be able to play in Champions League. Would Man. United take their place, because they were in the same group, or could it be Man. City as the third best placed team - since the punishment isn't on Basel, or for something that they did, maybe the reward doesn't go for the team that was in the same group...
And in Europa League, if Man. United or City get promoted to Champions League, who would take their place? Otelul if United gets bumped up? Lille, as the best 4th team, if it's City? Or maybe Tottenham, in either case, as the best 3rd place team in Europa League.
I doubt very much that Basel will be prevented from playing in the Champions League, but anyway it would be nice to understand the scenario if such a thing happens in the future... |

| that would be VERY sick, and I really hope this scenario won't appear... what has Basel to do with Mr. Constantin's stupidity ?!? |

| FIFA posed this kind of threath all the time. Almost everytime is won't come to a ban at all. But if it does and Basel will be kicked out of CL, then why should they be replaced by another team? Basel didn't do anything wrong, so the most logical thing would be to give a bye to their opponents (Bayern München) and not let any other team in that was eliminated already. |

I hope, Basel will stay, or elsewhere it will be Manchseter United. Bayern going straight to 1/4 finals? I do not think they will, cause PSG had the same thing in qualification round vs a team that was thrown out, and PSG got a new opponent with Differdange. |

| There is a big difference. PSG's opponent (Volos) was thrown out because they made a mistake themselves. So that is why Volos' last opponent was reinstated. Basel didn't make any mistake. So Basel's last opponent has no right to be reinstated. |

| I do not think it would be right if Bayern went straight to the 1/4 finals. What about the points for UEFA-coeficcient? Don't tell me they would get them (and for Germany) automatically!) The right thing would be that ....Basel will play the 1/8th. Otherwise that Manchester City (as the best 3rd team) would reintegrate the comptetion (but this would be impossible, cause they were in the group of Basel), and that Lille would integrate then the EL. |

| Teams only get points for matches they play, so if a team gets a bye into the QFs they don't get any points for the 1/8 finals (but they do get 1 bonuspoint for reaching the QFs of course). But I'm almost sure Basel will just play in the CL. |

It will be interesting to see if they can survive the experience. The Swiss season is exactly halfway through. Before the hammer fell, Sion were joint 2nd. Now they're last with -5pts. If they were to grab another 31pts, they'd have 26, and if Lausanne Sport who have 11pts repeated their form, they'd have 22pts. That would see Sion have to negotiate a relegation playoff, which you'd expect them to win.
However, I'd also expect every team to do their best to see Sion get dumped into the second tier. Since they're a threat to other teams' European ambitions, it would serve them well to remove Sion from the league. It would make it easier for the bottom clubs too, as it would be a little easier to avoid relegation the next year. |

| The teams in second tier will certainly hope that Sion wont finish 9th. A playoff versus Lausanne would be much easier than a playoff versus Sion.
It is good to see that teams who didnt have anything to do with the case dont get punished. |

| I read someone speculate the Swiss FA needed pushing along because they can't be bothered with dealing with Constantin because the man just won't back down until every single avenue he has has been walked down. I have no idea how it works over there, but it would certainly explain why the man thinks he can conduct himself the way he does. I also wondered when this whole saga was going on if he might win his case simply through sheer persistance. |
