| I don’t know if anyone has done anything like this before, but I thought I’d produce some figures comparing coefficient point earnings in the Champions League and Europa league at different stages. The topic of whether too many points are taken from the Europa League has always been a hot one. I’ve done a maximum and minimum calculation, and a middle of the road calculation too, as the minimum and maximum calculations are extremely unlikely to occur for real teams. The middle outcome provides a more realistic track record for a team, and you can give or take away a few points in your mind if you like.

Notice how once the KO stages begin, The gap in points between the maximum is 5pts, 6pts between the middle, and 7pts between the minimum. I think we can guess roughly that a Champions League KO stage competitor will collect very roughly 6 more coefficient points than an equivalent level Europa League competitor, while elimination in the group stage provides 4 bonus points to the Champions League team, plus further opportunities to gain points should the eliminated team finish third. I think the balance is good. It is still possible for a team to claim more points for reaching the equivalent stage in the Europa League to a Champions League team, but things are weighted sufficiently against it I think. A balance after all still has to be struck to allow nations with only a single Champions League place to move up the rankings too. |

| What about CL teams who finish third in their group? Are they considered CL team or EL teams or both or something special? |

I noticed I made a mistake on my maximum figures for losing finalists. It doesn't effect the 5pts 6pts 7pts thing though. I just should have had the teams drawing in the final instead of losing, so should read:

EL Maximum - P15 W14 D1 B3 - 32pts
If you compare the third place figures directly to the Champions League figures, the gap is 5pts in all instances in the KO stage, so I guess we can say roughly a team which continues on in the Champions League will be 5pts better off than a team that drops into the Europa League and is at the equivalent stage in that competition. |
