In the end Real was easily eliminated from Copa del Rey. Segunda team Alcorcon controlled the match, and conceaded only in 81st minute. 1-0 for Real in the end, but 1-4 on aggregate.
If you have any doubts about the squad, here it is: Dudek; 'Lass' (Marcelo, m.70), Pepe, Raúl Albiol, Arbeloa ; Mahamadou Diarra (Van der Vaart, m.46), Gago, Kaká; Raúl, Higuaín y Van Nistelrooy
Valencia was also in danger, but survived. Villarreal had some problems too.
Primera teams that were eliminated are: Sporting Gijon and Tenerife, but that's not a surpise as ex-Primera teams eliminated them, Celta and Recreativo. |

| @ Wak
The last 32 round of Spanis Cup was strongly seeded, I wrote something about it in the previous topic that was archived.
From last 16 onwards there was no seeding last year, but I'm not sure about this year because the teams from lower level did complain, they prefer to play against a big team and be eliminated (unless they face Real Madrid, of course) rather than playing another lower level team with the risk of also being eliminated. |

| Thanks for the info isidromv.
I don't find Coppa Italia's formula fair, do you? I know that it isn't a cherished competition there, but now I see why. To sum up : - Too complicated, thus a little bit boring to follow - Does not offer many possibilities to see Minnows vs. Giants - Favours too much the biggest, who have a two-round bye (true!) AND cannot face before QF - This is a french point of view, but it seems totally different from my good old Coupe de France where any registered team with a field can play (7000 teams participating, 9 preliminary rounds, 6 final rounds)
Oh, and in Coupe de France, the 7th round (8th if you count the "preliminary round" in some regions) will be played this weekend. 86 matches, with 19 Ligue 2 teams entering. Guingamp is in Ligue 2 too, but as Cup holder they start in Round of 64 (Round 9) like the other Ligue 1 team. 5 teams from National out of 20 (3rd division) are eliminated, after 2 rounds. Istres-Nîmes is the only L2-L2 fixture. |

ok here it is : 1) - here i disagree with you. it's not complicated at all. all the teams(and their supporters) know their path since august. it's a straight-elimination series of ties with preset matches based on seed. not complicated at all. maybe the tournament IS boring, but not because it's complicated. i wouldn't call it boring, but a lot of teams prefer the league and european cups to the national cup. 2 years ago milan lost in 1/8th at home against catania because they put 0(zero) usual starters in the field because the game was in between the club world cup final and an important league game. 2) - true to a point though. this year we'll see a 2nd league team go to the olimpic stadium to play against roma next month. and last year a 3rd league team went to play at the same stadium against lazio(eventually the cup winner). 3) - true. i guess the italian federation do that because they don't want a team like guingamp in el... 4) - the french and english cup model is different then a lot of other national cups. is it better? worse? i don't know. you can have nice stories like guingamp, nimes and calais, but then don't whine about the national coefficient... |

| Decades ago, there was a kind of magic in french cup. Amateur teams could meet with top first league teams, some good amateur teams could get as high as quarter finals, and that was a real event.
Coming into the nineties, best professional teams became less and less motivated, and even once, there was only one first league team in quarter finals. Third or even fifth division teams got to rounds of 16 and 8, beating teams like PSG or Marseille.
Imagine that only one seeded player would be qualified for Wimbledon quarterfinals, and semi-finals featuring Petzschner, Clément, Nieminen and Gonzalez. Not sure sponsoring would be there for long. |

No surprises here. All the favourites won in regular time. At least this means we won't have a weak team in EL. |

| Spain: the draw for octavos, cuartos and semifinales of the Copa del Rey will be held Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 13:00 CET. Apparently the draw for octavos will be seeded--I reached this conclusion since marca.com reports that the cuartos will be a "sorteo puro" (pure drawing, that is unseeded). The matchups previously reported on ESPN futbol were completely bogus--the listing has disappeared from the ESPN website. |

| AlanK, the draw for the 1/8 finals is an open draw too. The only think that is fixed is that if two teams from different leagues play each other, the bottom team will host the 1st match (so the tie won't be over and it could make some money from TV and tickets...) |

Edited by: dzomba at: 02-12-2009, 08:06 | Wow.
Barcelona - Sevilla in 8th finals, winner probably facing Valencia or Deportivo, who fight for 4th CL spot, and in semifinals winner the most likely faces Atletico or Villarreal !
EDIT: Ooh, now i see Mallorca is in Barca's half, while Atletico and Villarreal are in the opposite. It means Atletico still has a chance to earn European spot ...
My first impression was shock, but now it looks more balanced. |
