In the new system, the key ranks are : 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 12th (13th), 15th.

3rd (3+1+3) : Italy has 6 more points than France, nothing to add.

5th (2+1+3 one less round for the 3rd team in CL NCq) : Germany has 4 points points than Russia, nothing to add.

6th (2+1+3) : see the dedicaced topic.

9th (1+1+4) : Netherlands has 7 more points than Turkey, nothing to add.

12th (1+1+3) : Ukraine has 4 more points than Belgium, nothing to add.

13th (one team in CLGS if the titleholder is qualified via his own league) : Belgium, Czech Republic and Greece are close (less than 0.5 point), Belgium has one team who can still qualify (2-1 win 1st leg), Czech Republic is almost out (Slavia lost 0-2 at home) and Greece has 3 teams left, one with a very hard opponent in CL and the 2 others made a draw (one at home 1-1, one away 0-0). If Anderlecht is out against Bordeaux, Greece will probably be 13th. If not, it will be a photo finish.

15th : (0+2+3) : Norway and Switzerland are far (3 and 1.5 points) and their teams are almost out (the 4 teams have lost). The battle seems over.

Exellent round for Belgium this week... They can now be pretty sure of their place in the top 15. And if Anderlecht qualifies for the next rand, they also have a chance to end at the 13th place, but that will be very difficult imo.

Quite good results for Greece up to now (3 draws). Still, all of them can qualify or lose.

If one team manages to qualify then 13th place for Greece is obtainable.
This Thursday is crucial. I hope both AEK and Panathinaikos will make it.

Honestly how many Romanians thought this would happen?

Russia gained the upper hand on Romania today, but it ain't over yet - Portugal is closing up from behind.
Spartak might be disappointed at being unable to bridge the gap, getting so close... Nevertheles, they now will have team coeff in excess of 39, which might be enough for a seeded spot in CL QR3 next season.

Congratulations to Russia! I don't think Portugal will be able to catch them.

Also, better luck next year for Romania, with their huge overall points and good starting position, sure they have real chance to win this battle for sixth.

As for the other countries points tonight, named above, with Braga, Slavija, Anderleht, Basel, Zurich, PAO and AEK out (in my opinion), i think it could go without changes till the end of season, meaning Belgium on 13-th.

Strange referee of villa-Zenit.
I admit first RC was deserved but second to Sirl - ridiculous..
Anyway bravo Zenit, if the were not second red card they would get a draw..
Again Marseille - Zenit as 2 yras ago. But Zenit will have squad problems. Especially in defence. Shirokov suspended, Lombaerts injured I suppose for a long time.

6th : Benfica saved the hope for Portugal with 2 late goals. But Portugal is still far.

13th : if Olympiacos doesn't pass Chelsea, Belgium is 13th.

No, Portugal needs 13 points to get 6th (assuming Zenit gets nothing). That's an average of 4+ points for Porto, Benfica or Sporting. Only if all of them get to quarters (or one to semis).

Furthermore, each two points by Zenit mean almost 4 more by Portugal's teams.

Hard, very hard for Portugal. It's easier to try to stay ahead of Romania. (edit: though it does not matter much this year, it may matter for next year)

Russia overtook Romania but I think they are too far ahead for Portugal. I assumed that Russia's season would be over after tonight but that is not the case. But I believe in Sporting so I hope they can go far.


Battle for 13:

Good night for Belgium who almost secured the spot. I don't believe anymore Greece can pass Belgium.

For the first place: with Villarreal and Atletico out, it makes Spain 4 teams, England 7. And there is 'just' a bit over 2 points to cross. It is possible!

Another battle is in teamranking: with Milan and Liverpool not in qualification places in their domestic leagues, PSV might become the 8th team. That is now the - eliminated - Villarreal. They need another 3 points, so they need to qualify against Tottenham, hmmm hard but not impossible....

Teamranking battles are difficult to predict because you don't know how they go perform in Europe and in their domestic leaugue. But for PSV in pot 1 you should also look at Bayern who is not so far behind PSV.

Another great night for Belgium. Anderlechts unexpected qualification against Bordeaux means that we are almost sure of that 13th place. Now Olympiakos needs to qualify against Chelsea if they want to pass Belgium... Not totally impossible imo, since Olympiakos had some great results outside of home this season (1-3 at Werder Bremen, 1-2 at SS Lazio).

But things look good for the moment. A few weeks ago I was afraid that Belgium would leave the top fifteen, now we are at the 13th place! That's a little miracle after such a poor European season.

How big are Belgiums chances on getting that group round Champions League - ticket if they stay at the 13th place? How often did the 10th got such a ticket in the past?

Both games were played on penalties, and yes, Sevilla and Porto were favourite. Schalke's GK saved the game alone, that's football, but you cannot understand, you are the super-hero (frustraded, ...).

I'm wondering why i'm answering to you. For the last 2 years, you told us :

-Romania will be in battle with Italy.
-Romania will be in battle with France next year.
-Romania will be 5th sure in the end of the season.
-Romania will be 6th without a problem.
-Ahah Porto is out.

When you fail to predict everything, yes you finish to say something good.

My prediction was simple Romania's coeficient to be around 10 this year. Of course all that u said would've hapened. I didn`t predict 10 things i just predicted one. Of course i was very wrong. But even u i think didn`t predicted such a catastrofical year for Romania.

Of course Porto and Sevilia are out.

It's now official:
Spain and Itlay both lost 2 teams in the CL-quarters. England kept their 4. This means England is on their way to spot 1 in country ranking. I hope UC can stop some English teams (come on Fiorentina, PSV and Benfica!!) before we get 2 all-english finals!

It also means that Inter is a stopped target for the teamranking Bayern(/PSV) can aim for (first Villarreal at 90.5, then Madrid ad 93.5 and then Inter at 96.5, though for Inter a final is almost necessary.....
