Many giants have fallen last night - Lyon, Milan, Real ...

Nice QuarterFinal matches: Villarreal - Barcelona, and Juventus - Inter.
France will again have a weak representative from a domestic (league) cup.

So the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey are:

Villarreal-Barsa

Valencia-Atletico Madrid

Getafe-Mallorca

Racing Santander-Athletic Bilbao

Real Madrid has been very poor since the Christmas break--this might have been their best game (lost 0-1 to Mallorca last night) but this time the good fortune of previous games (2-0 over Zaragoza and 0-2 over Levante in the league; 2-1 loss to Mallorca last week in the Cup) deserted them. The dominant note in the octavos was equality--two matchups went overtime (Villarreal a global 2-1 over Recreativo de Huelva; Ath. Bilbao over Espanyol via penalties); Barsa and At. Madrid won on away goals; Racing and Mallorca ended up with two-goal wins in matchups not really decided until the last ten minutes; and there were two relative blowouts (Valencia over Betis and Getafe over Levante). First leg of quarterfinals next week; second leg the following week. Predictions: Barsa over Villarreal (but this is an "upset special"); Atleti over Valencia; Getafe over Mallorca; Racing over Bilbao. But it's all very close . . .

Very interesting game Inter - Juventus (2-2). Inter scored twice with ten men, but Juve fought back in the ending minutes to level. Still it will be pretty open match in the second leg. Roma also fight back with ten men vs Sampdoria (1-1).

Valencia seems to put their hopes in the Copa del Rey this season. They beated Atletico 1-0 (first leg). So with only Barcelona or Villarreal (0-0) still in the competition (all other top teams out), they will have good chances to get one trophy.

Well, it's true that one of the "ususal suspects" is most likely to win the Copa del Rey in Spain, but hey, last year Barsa didn't take Getafe seriously enough and got thumped soundly; this year Racing Santander is on a roll.

Villarreal-Barsa 0-0
Valencia-Atleti 1-0
Getafe-Mallorca 1-0
Racing-Ath. Bilbao 2-0

Second legs to be played next week (Tues.?, Wed., Thurs.?)

Belgian cup is in 1/4 stage this week.
First leg (1/4f and 1/2 f in home and away game)this week, returns on 27/2.

Cercle - Standard
Gent - Kortrijk (2)

Anderlecht - Dender
GBA - Roeselare

- Championship leader Club Brugge lost in 1/8 final. They are the only top 6 team who is not in this quarter final.
- Cercle - Standard are recognised as best 2 teams in Belgium this season.
- Anderlecht will have to win the cup to play in Europe next year. Their current 6th place is not even sufficient for Intertoto.
- Kortrijk is the only team of the 2th league, buth they are current leaders.

The first two semifinalists in Spain are Valencia and Getafe, both winners on away goals after less than sterling performances.

Atletico Madrid 3, Valencia 2 (0-1)

Mallorca 2, Getafe 1 (0-1)

The other two semifinalists will be decided tonight; odds are they'll be Barcelona and Racing Santander.

Semifinal matchups are to be determined tomorrow (?--not sure about the when of the draw); semifinal matches will be played the last Wednesday in February and the third Wednesday in March.

Now confirmed: draw for semifinals is Friday, Feb. 1, at 12:00. The final is to be played, subject to confirmation, in Madrid in the Bernabeu on April 16.

Update on Scottish Cup

Brechin City have been thrown out of the cup after fielding two ineligible players in their 4th round win over Hamilton Academical. Hamilton will now visit Aberdeen in the 5th round.

Scottish League Cup semi-final

Rangers 2 Heart of Midlothian 0

The other semi-final between Aberdeen and Dundee United will be played next week. There is no UEFA Cup place for this tournament but I thought it may be interesting to somebody.

this year the final will be in a single match in Rome, can you imagine if that day will be a Roma- Lazio match?
does some of you recall a final between two teams of the same city (maybe in England)?

In 1975, my brother and I watched the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. The win was for the former, but we missed a lot of the game because of a power outage in Barcelona, where we were watching.

Ath. Bilbao leads Racing 2-0 at the half; they go to extra time if this score holds through regulation.

This is getting good: Racing scored at 8' of the second half; Bilbao came right back about a minute later: 3-1 Bilbao, but since the first game ended 2-0 for Racing, Bilbao needs one more. . . . and now Racing just made it 3-2. Bilbao needs two or Racing is a semifinalist for the first time in their history. Just about 15 minutes to go . . . And at 92', Racing scores again!!! 3-3 and Racing is a semifinalist!

And now--Barsa-Villarreal; first game ended 0-0. Will Ronaldinho play or warm the bench? Tune in tomorrow . . .

. . . and Barsa is the last semifinalist, after a 1-0 win over Villarreal in the Nou Camp. Goal by Henry in the 41st minute; according to the Madrid-oriented daily Marca, Henry was offside, but watching the video leaves me unconvinced--it was one of those offsides that the referee will never call to the satisfaction of all concerned.

So the draw for semifinals is later today. I prefer Barsa-Racing and Valencia-Getafe; I don't really want a Barsa-Getafe rematch from last year's semis (let them play the final this year). I wouldn't mind Barsa-Valencia and Getafe-Racing, which would guarantee one of the have-nots a spot in the final. The sentimental favorite has to be Racing, the overall favorite has to be Barsa. More later . . .

Semifinals: 27 February/19 March

Barsa-Valencia
Based on current form, it's a no-brainer to pick Barsa . . . although Valencia is looking at the Cup as the salvation of its season, and a lot can happen in a few weeks . . .

Getafe-Racing
This is a terribly hard pick. On current form, I'll go with Racing, but by about 51-49. Neither of these teams has ever won anything at the top level; Getafe, of course, was the losing finalist in the Copa last year, which is why they're in the UEFA Cup this year.

Probably, Inter-Roma final again. In fact, Inter is invincible, but not when playing vs Roma. Totti & co. are their executioners.

Although, it would be nice to see Roma - Lazio derby. I suppose that's the greatest derby in Europe (bigger than Real-Barca, Inter-Milan or some British derby) because of passion, that is put in the match (don't know about Olympiacos-Panathinaikos maybe). In other derbies it's important to be overall winner, but in this case funs would rather win both head to head games, than to win a title.

I remember when Lazio funs wanted their team to lose in the last round in Rome vs Inter, only because of that in this case Inter would be champion, not Roma. I am sure that players would do that, if that was allowed.

But Lazio's chances in semifinal are small ...

Belgian 1/4 F seem already been decided after the 1° legs, since all home teams won with big differences.
With 20 goals in 4 games nobody can say Belgian cup is a dull game. But the return games risk to be the match to much.

Kortrijk (2) 5-1 Gent
Cercle Brugge 4-1 Standard Liege

Anderlecht 3-0 Dender
GBA 5-1 Roeselare

Remarks:
* Anderlecht is in trouble in the league and had an active mid season tranfer activity. This cup seems to be their best shot for European footbal next year.
* For Standard it was the second lost game this season. Their only defeat so far was Uefa cup R1 in St Petersburg.

Quarterfinals in German Cup was drawn yesterday.

Borussia Dortmund (1st) - TSV 1899 Hoffenheim (2nd)
Bayern Munich (1st) - TSV 1860 Munich (2nd)
VFB Stuttgart (1st) - Carl Zess Jena (2nd)
VFL Wolfsburg (1st) - Hamburger SV (1st)

Very good drawn for the most 1st League Clubs. Have all home matches against not so strong 2nd devision Clubs but in the Munich derby there can happen evrything even when Bayern is the main favourite for all matches in germany.
The only 1st league clash is Wolfsburg vs. Hamburg. Hamburg have a better team, but Wolfsburg play at home, so you never now. 50% chances for booth teams.

Ricardo, can you please update your CL and UC 08-09 prediction in your website? Panathinaikos is top in the Greek league (after a very long time...) and I want to see what their position would be in the CL. Thanks! This weekend was also the 100th birthday of the creation of the club!!

seso,
Sorry for this. I have little time this season and the last weeks it seems Soccerway (from where I import the tables) is changing every week their pages. Last week resutls I got in and now this week they suddenly have adde a dot after the spot. &^@#$*^)#@!$&. I'm working on it, but this means changing my sheets considerably every week and that's so annoying, It is supposed to be easy!

OK it's updated.
More countries are playing now again after the winterbreak. I will try to get it updated again weekly.
Don't mind the strangfe characters in Munchen, Fenerbahce and Zurich. I know it's there, and I corrected teh coefficient for them. I guess it's understandable.
Still lots to do for the season is over.
And in a week the UC starts again - lots of points still to gather.

Can somebody explain to me how the Portuguese Cup works? As far as I know, there are only 7 games in the last 16 (last 15?)? does that mean that Estrela Amadora is directly qualified for the quarters? is there any reason for this?
thanks in advance.

Lyonnais,

The 1/8 of final are the last 14 in Portuguese Cup, really. The reason for this is that the Portuguese FA stated until the quarters there is 1 team exempt (in the early stages there were 2 teams exempt, actually).
So, Estrela was the lucky team already qualified for quarters. But from now on there will be no exemptions. I don`t know when it started but I can ensure you it`s being like that for the past 15 years.

In Belgium the returns of the quarter finals seemed to be useless as the first legs had ended as follows:

Kortrijk (2) 5-1 Gent
Cercle Brugge 4-1 Standard Liege
Anderlecht 3-0 Dender
GBA 5-1 Roeselare

But tonight in the return matches, Gent scored the 4-0 in the 93rd minute and Standard also won by 4-0, with their last two goals also in the extra time. Both other matches ended in a dull 1-1 and were never exciting.

Semi-finals: (home and away, anderlecht and standard play first leg at home.)
Anderlecht-Germinal Beerschot
Standard-Gent

Portuguese Quarter finals:

Naval 1-2 Vitória Setúbal
Porto 1-0 Gil Vicente
Benfica 2-0 Moreirense
Sporting 1-0 Estrela Amadora

All big 3 are through as expected, plus Vitória Setúbal that in the past 3 seasons made it to the final twice! Will this be the 3rd time in 4 years to reach Europe through Cup? I also remind they are also League Cup finalists this year versus Sporting.

They seem to be turning into Portuguese Liverpool!...

Romanian Cup QF:

One match at neutral venue

Yesterday

Dacia Mioveni - Dinamo Bucuresti 1 - 0
Unirea Urziceni - Rapid Bucuresti 1 - 0

Today

Pandurii Targu Jiu - Gloria Buzau
CFR Cluj - FC Brasov (II)

For the first time since 1994, there will be no teams from Bucuresti in the semifinals. Also, for the first time since 1995, we'll have a non-Bucuresti team winning the trophy. Petrolul Ploiesti won it in 1995.

What a fabulous game in the Nou Camp! This was the game that reminds you why you love this game so much. 90,000 plus or minus fans, and the old rivalry between Barsa and Valencia. Make no mistake, Valencia is once again a force to be contended with in the league and cup. They are known as a counterattacking team, and they played this role to perfection last night. How do you shut down Barsa? Close down the passing lanes, deny them space, don't let Eto'o break free, and always have two or more defenders on Messi around the penalty area. At 5' came Barsa's best chances: Hildebrand stopped the first shot, a defender stopped the rebound, and another defender stopped another rebound. The Valencia defense was suffocating from then on. Second half, Joaquin out for Valencia, Arizmendi in. Almost immediate dividends: Arizmendi broke free on the right, dribbled close to the edge of the penalty area, and centered perfectly for "el guaje" Villa, who, between two defenders, met the pass perfectly at 70'. The rest of the game was about as furious as you can imagine; the crowd was in it, Barsa tried everything, maybe there was a penalty on Bojan (did Iturralde whistle a foul outside the area before the foul in the area? If so, he should have given "law of advantage"). At 94', Eto'o shot from in front of the penalty area, Hildebrand stopped it, the rebound went to Xavi, who kicked it through a forest of legs, and somehow it found its way to the net, when umpteen previous shots had not. But wait--did Eto'o use his hand to set up his shot? Announcers thought maybe so; I seemed to see a blip in the flight of the ball before Eto'o shot. Replay was conclusive: HANDBALL!! But this was the kind that a referee was not going to catch unless perfectly positioned, and Iturralde wasn't, so 1-1 was the final. See Eto'o serve it up on marca.com.
Return game is in Mestalla on Thursday, March 20, presumably at 20:45. Game is Thursday instead of Wednesday because March 19 is the big day of the Fallas in Valencia.

And tonight at 21:00--Getafe-Racing.

First leg of second semifinal of the Copa del Rey (second leg March 19):

Getafe 3 (De la Red, Casquero, Manu del Moral), Racing 1 (Smolarek)

Getafe scored first, Racing tied (first half); Getafe went up 2-1 at about 57' and finished the scoring at about 83'. A two-goal lead makes Getafe the favorite to reach the final, of course, but nobody is counting out Racing.

The results of the German Cup quarters (posted above by spoonman) mean that the Cup Winner spot will almost definitely not be taken by the 6th of the league. Neither will Dortmund or Wolfsburg reach the 5th place nor will Bayern finish outside of the CL spots.

Carl Zeiss Jena was a losing finalist in the Cup Winners Cup in 1980/81 season (lost to Dinamo Tbilisi 1:2). Of course current generation of players hardly can remember those glory days...
