English UEFA Cup QR3 place

Under the new system, which English team starts in QR3 of the UEFA Cup - is it:

1) The team that wins the League Cup
2) The runner up of the FA Cup
3) The lowest placed in the league

4) All of the above

Seriously now, that place will go to the lowest UC entry. The winner of a Cup (League or FA) will never be in that situation. So the answer is: the lowest placed team in the rankings.

In some countries (England and France) the last league entrant position is given to the League Cup Winner.

In a normal situation the last UEFA cup entrant is the League Cup winner.

But if the FA Cup winner qualifies to CL, the the FA Cup runner-up is also given the last UEFA Cup spot (according to the regulations), so in this case I don't know which of them will be.

It could also be that FA Cup runners-up are no longer playing UC, unless qualified by other means. This point is still to be approved.

It will be the team that finished lowest in the league (unless that is the 1 that won the FA-cup, then it will be the 2nd lowest in the league).

Forza - I disagree.

The cup loser (assuming they will still qualify) is always ranked below the lowest-placed league team.

I also believe Bert is right that the League Cup Winner is low-ranked too.

So normally (using England as an example) - FA Cup Winner, 5th in League, League Cup Winner.

But if Cup Winner is in CL:

5th in League, League Cup Winner, Cup Loser (though I'm not 100% sure about these last two).

It would be best if UEFA skipped the cup loser spot completely. And chances are good that they will (it was part of the "cup winner in CL" proposal), but it needs to be confirmed. It is an artifact of the long-gone Cup Winner's Cup. Until then badgerboy is right, although I'm not sure of the last 2 positions either (not explicitly covered in the regulations).

Many details need to be confirmed. Cup holder spots, maybe even ranking adjustments, etc. But I think it will take until spring/summer 2009, until the new regulations will be published.

I think AZ is right.
I think the order is first Cupwinner and then all the other teams in the order of how they ended in the league.
if the league order would be
team1
leaguecupwinner
cupwinner
team2

then the cupwinner would be first, ans then team1, leaguecupwinner, team2
Actualy you might say that the leaguecupwinner qualifies by its leagueposition...

Ricardo is right too.

Maybe I just misunderstood ForzaAz's post.

Yes - OK. If I read it as a direct answer to mjwillan's original question then it's a very good answer.

I thought it was strange yesterday as I don't remember ForzaAZ posting incorrect information before. My mistake in disagreeing yesterday.

But Forza - although you're 100% right (and very concise) in the case of:

5th - UEFA Cup 1
6th + Cup loser - UEFA Cup 2
7th + League Cup winner - UEFA Cup 3 (so earlier QR)

5th - UEFA Cup 1
6th + League Cup winner - UEFA Cup 2
7th + Cup loser - UEFA Cup 3 (earlier QR)

-are you sure that league position also takes precedence in an example like:

5th - UEFA Cup 1
6th - Out
7th - Out
8th - League Cup Winner (or Cup Final loser)
9th - Cup Final loser (or League Cup Winner)

So the answer is that if there is a League Cup winner or FA Cup runner up then they will be starting in QR3, if there is neither then the lower or lowest team qualifying through league position will start in QR3, and if there is both then its unclear which will start in QR3 - my preference would be for the FA Cup runner up to get the QR3 place as it gives an extra incentive to win it - 2 weeks more summer holiday for the players!

Thanks for your help

Yes, I think we're there! I remember we went through this debate a few years ago.

As I recall

UEFA Entry 1: National League 4 if English team wins the Champions League and finishes outside Top 4 in the Premiership
UEFA Entry 2: FA Cup Winners
UEFA Entry 3: National League 5
UEFA Entry 4: League Cup Winners
UEFA Entry 5: National League 6
UEFA Entry 6: National League 7
UEFA Entry 7: FA Cup Runners Up.

So, under normal circumstances, the League Cup Winners would enter in Q3 2009, while the FA Cup Winners and League 5th Position would enter in Q4.

However, if Entry 1 above is needed, then they and the FA Cup winners would enter in Q4, leaving National League 5 in Q3, and an extra space to be created for the League Cup Winners.

Now, if Entry 1 above {B>isn't{/B> used:

If the FA Cup Winners are already qualified for the Champions League, the FA Cup Runners up will qualify, but as the lowest entrant (ie in Q3).

If both FA Cup finalists have qualified for the Champions League, then National league 5th and the League Cup Winners are in Q4, and National League 6th enter in Q3.

Of course, if both FA Cup finalists are in the Champions League, and so is the League Cup Winner, then National League 7th enter in Q3.

Clear?
