| If we had 40 clubs in G14, it could not be the same organisation as nowadays. Milan, Juventus, Inter, Roma, Real, Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, Man. United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern, Werder, Borussia, Bayer, Ol. Lyon, Ol. Marseilles, Paris SG, Monaco, Porto, Benfica, Ajax, PSV, Celtic, Anderlecht, Fenerbahce, Basel, Olympiacos, Rosenborg, Copenhagen, Mac. Haifa, Austria, Dynamo, Steaua, Sparta, Wisla, Levski, CSKA Moscow, Crvena Zvezda. |

| Well…
These “so called” elite clubs may get tired of Platini and create a league of their own. And without these clubs, UEFA competitions won’t be interesting for the other clubs and for sponsors.
So Platini is some kind of “hostage” of these clubs. It’s either theirs way or no way. He promised to take spots from England, Italy and Spain, and instead what is his plan now?? They will get more to remain happy.
If one day these clubs aren’t happy, it won’t be a good think to be outside the group. |

Edited by: Cirdan at: 31-10-2007, 22:43 | @dragonite: Platini promised more nations to get into CL group stage, which will happen. And he did not really give the top nations more spots... one more direct spot, but there were never less than 3 clubs from Italy, France or Spain in the CL anyway, and with the tougher qualification for the 4th, I doubt that there will be more top 3 teams on average than now.
@Ricardo: afaik only one team per league will join, so it can't be both Celtic and Rangers.
Back to topic:
G14 are a pressure group, that wants to express their common interests basically with the FIFA and the UEFA, any member can influence the points that are discussed.
So far, there were 2 main interests of the G14. The first is the Champions League, the distribution of money in it and who participates. With all the new clubs from smaller leagues joining in, there will probably not be a common interest anymore in the future, though every club gets votes dependant on past European Cup wins, so the founding members will still have more than half of the votes, so they can probably still get their points through, if they want to (but they might risk the smaller clubs quitting when they do that to often)
The second point is player rights in international matches, basically money for the clubs when they have to send players to their nts and part of the profit of world cups, and player insurances in case they get injured in internationals. For these points, more members from more nations will probably help as a selling point. |

Edited by: Cirdan at: 31-10-2007, 22:50 | @Ricardo: I read the 1-club-per-nation-will-join-part in the German magazine "kicker", but the clubs mentioned above fit this. I said one club per nation will join, that does not include present G14 members. In the list there is max 1 new member per country. But I think the additional Dutch club is missing ^^ |

| G14 invites the biggest club from each country so that is why Celtic are in before Rangers. |

Edited by: jpcccc at: 02-11-2007, 01:10 | This is simply transforming G14 from a elite western europe association into a full shadow government of UEFA.
Nice political move. Splitting the top clubs from their national associations, putting more pressure on both UEFA decisions and the issue of players being used by national teams. I see benefits for top clubs of these countries. Another step toward a Euroleague (or CL without UEFA as organizer). |

| As far as I know, the G-14 is trying to address 2 big issues:
1) first, current members disagree on the objectives of the lobby. There are basically 2 lines: - the one led by Real Madrid who believe that the G-14 got everything they wanted (creation of the Champions League, better distribution of money) and the G-14 have no real raison d'ętre anymore. - the other one led by Bayern Munich who believe that big clubs should keep on their fight to get more money and possibly create their own competition at middle-term. The only thing they all have in common is to fight vs. UEFA and FIFA to limit the number of international games and mostly make UEFA and FIFA be responsible of their players' injuries during an international game.
2) the G-14 is just seen by everybody, including in top countries, as the lobby of the rich clubs and although most battles are more legal than anything else, the G-14 realized that they needed a much broader support to increase pressure vs. FIFA/UEFA.
That's why they took the decision to increase significantly the number of members.
The interest for new members? well, I guess that most clubs would be happy to be on the right train if something changed in the European football landscape. At least be part or simply aware of the discussions. |
