| The distribution of revenue to all the teams that took part in both the CL & UEFA Cup Group stages has been published by UEFA in the new edition of UEFA direct .
Follow the link for a full breakdown (pages 7-10) but I put some of the main totals here (with apologies for the formatting):
2006-07 CL revenue distribution by club
AC Milan 39592000 Chelsea 34662000 Liverpool 32218000 PSV Eindhoven 31600000 Manchester United 31533000 Roma 31086000 Internazionale 29582000 Bayern Munchen 28732000 Barcelona 22702000 Lyon 22647000 Valencia 22601000 Real Madrid 21026000 Arsenal 19274000 Werder Bremen 18469000 Lille 18045000 Bordeaux 16120000 Celtic 15688000 Hamburg 14327000 Galatasaray 13958000 FC Kobenhavn 12168000 FC Porto 11519000 Anderlecht 11412000 AEK Athens 11347000 Olympiacos 10884000 Steaua Bucuresti 8386000 CSKA Moskva 7874000 Benfica 7793000 Sporting Portugal 7761000 Shakhtar Donetsk 7383000 Spartak Moskva 7210000 Dynamo Kyiv 6437000 Levski Sofia 5564000
The main thing that jumps out at me from this list is the position of PSV as 4th "biggest earner". This is because - despite the Dutch TV market being much smaller than "the big five" PSV had noone to split their cash with (the big five all had a three way split). Perhaps they can afford to send a nice case of champagne to their friends in Copenhagen!
2006-07 TV market share distribution by country
England 56587000 20.881 Italy 56160000 20.723 Germany 35228000 12.999 Spain 33529000 12.372 France 29612000 10.927 Netherlands 19400000 7.159 Greece 8731000 3.222 Turkey 7658000 2.826 Scotland 6288000 2.320 Denmark 5268000 1.944 Belgium 4812000 1.776 Portugal 3573000 1.318 Romania 1786000 0.659 Russia 1284000 0.474 Ukraine 920000 0.339 Bulgaria 164000 0.061
The last figure is the percentage of the €271M market pool each country got. This should also be a reasonable indication of how much each country paid for it's TV rights relative to each other.
Surprises for me:
- how much less the Spanish clubs get compared to the English & Italians.
- the low position of Portugal.
- the fact that the Romanian TV market share is more than ten times bigger than that of Bulgaria. I'm also surprised that it's also worth more than both the Russian & Ukrainian markets - given the assumed extra wealth of the bigger clubs in those countries, as well as the far larger populations their TV markets are catering for.
2006-07 UEFA Cup revenue distribution
Sevilla 6251500 Espanyol 5311500 Tottenham Hotspur 4323000 Osasuna 2639000 Werder Bremen 2592000 Bayer Leverkusen 1565000 AZ Alkmaar 1361000 Benfica 687000
I've only listed the 8 quarter-finalists - the only ones to get some of the "market pool". For the record the "best of the rest" -Newcastle & Rangers - both got €450,000. Again for the record the combined totals for the two clubs that made money from both competitions are:
Werder Bremen 21061000 Benfica 8480000
So Sevilla - by winning the UEFA Cup - did just about manage to make more money than Levski - who lost every game in the CL group stage. Espanyol - as losing finalists - fell short... |

So different countries pay different ammounts for the same games? Or am I understanding it wrong?
I just feel really sad that Portugal's share is so low that we can't ever fight against the big five in this department... |

Well of course they don't pay for specific games - they pay for the "package" of so many live games + highlights etc. for the entire season.
It doesn't surprise me that Portugal pays much much less for it's CL football than the "big five" but it does surprise me a bit that it also pays a fair bit less than Greece, Turkey & Scotland among others - especially given the relative success of Portuguese teams recently (three teams in the group stage). |

| But is England paying 15 times more than Portugal? Even considering they have 1 more team and 3 out of 4 reached the semi-finals it seems a lot. And in Portugal we have at least 5 games live per matchday (4 in pay-per-view and 1 free-tv) and the pay-per-view channel also shows some other games after the live ones have ended.
This remains true for the 1stKO round + quarter-finals(all games live) + semi-finals(all games live).
The final is shown on free-tv (and also on the pay-per-view channel).
The pay-per-view channel paid the rights for almost all games + highlights + CL programs. From what I'm understanding they paid a lot less than any english channel (for the same package).
The only reason they could pay less is probably related to the fact that the audience will be a lot less than any english channel, but that figures: pay-per-view channel + much smaller country/population... |

| the amount of money that a tv station pays for any sporting event is the result of a bid at which several networks apply. that's why in some cases the numbers may seem severely blown out of proportion. on the other hand, if there is only one station applying for the rights, the fee is very small. nowadays the bids are send in sealed envelopes, but non the less some figures are horrifying. so uefa makes money and the guys there have kids who must have the newest phones and wives who must have the most expensive furs. |

No - for the first time UEFA now shows the figures in Euros. |

| Anybody still got the figures from last year? PSV did great with the market pool. I counted on 5 Mln extra because of Copenhagens win over Ajax, but it was apparently 9 or so! Only Inter now got more from the marketpool, just a little extra change ![](include/smilies/s0.gif) But PSV is very quiet at the players market, while they probabaly will lose some key players (Cocu, Alex, Farfan). (Feyenoord is buying strong, without a European season, they will do good in the league!) |

Edited by: mabo at: 29-06-2007, 14:25 | For the UEFA Cup (but not for the UCL) the market pool share is increased if an association is represented by more than one team in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final.

| For the UEFA Cup: You all seem to miss the fact that every club sells all home matches until QF and retains the revenue. This makes 5 home games for all R of 16 teams that started from R1! I'm pretty sure that the likes of Leverkusen or Sevilla made some additional millions from those matches ![](include/smilies/s0.gif) |

| Fair point, Nick.
It would be interesting to see some of those figures too - although of course they will vary wildly from club to club. |
