| am i right in thinking that there is country-protection in the last 32...but the last 16 is a completely open draw?
and i presume that in the last 32, a team who has finished 1st in their group cannot play the team who finished 3rd in that same group? |

| It seems that when draw is made for last 32 and last 16 at the same time, country protection is still enabled, and probably is affecting both draws. At least I can not recall same-country clashes before QF stage in the last two seasons. |

| There's no country protection in the last 16.
Had Monaco beaten Basel last year they would've met Strasbourg. |

Same for AZ and Heerenveen last season. Had both won their matches (versus Betis and Steaua) last season, then they would have met in the last 16.
In the 2 years that the current system was played, once 2 teams from the same country met in the last 16: in 2004/05 Auxerre beat Lille 1-0 on aggregate. |
