Boavista boost effect

Petrovic, from Montenegro, is no longer Boavista coach. The new one is an old one: Jaime Pacheco. The one that took Boavista to the title, two 2nd places, one 4th place and Boavista four times in Europe in a row. Second group stage of CL, and Semi Finals of UEFA.

Since that year, Boavista never returned to Europe. Unfortunatly for Portugal, because was one top seeded team. This year is the LAST chance for Boavista, to get yet the results from 5 years ago, in order to be seeded in UC round 1.

We've seen that Portugal so far, has been a disaster having its "second line teams" always non seeded and getting out in 1st round with few exceptions. Boavista was one of them, who thanks to that, later built a solid Ranking, that in long term, leaded them to UEFA cup semi finals, while at home achieved only 10th place.

So, I believe that Boavista qualification for next year EC, having a so experienced coach, may be crucial for Portugal Coeff, since we're needing at least one more team seeded in round 1. I hope Braga this year can also add itself at least 2 more victories in order to be seeded next year also, since all indicates that Braga shall achieve an European place also.

Portugal next year would have then 5 out of 6 seeded teams instead of only 3. And those 5, whith coaches with international experience. I believe that could bring a boost effect.

Don't you think it's too little, too late? I don't know if Boavista will still be seeded next year IF they actually manage to qualify. Pacheco's tactics were innovative and efficient when they won the league and got to the UEFA Cup semi-finals, but since then, all the Superliga teams are copying them. It's easy. Lots of fouls and rough play, and defend, defend, defend...
I actually don't think Boavista can make it. I consider the first four places already delivered to the big 3 + Braga. The other two spots go, as usual, to the defeated cup finalist (miserable team as always) and the surprise of the year. And this year it might be Nacional again (BLARGH!).
The thing is that thanks to Boavista missing out for a few seasons, we are now very threatened by the 7th and 8th placed in the rankings. It's a shame, but I don't think Pacheco will change that, as it's already too late. And I don't believe he will be able to replicate his turn of the century results...

Hi, this is an internal question but have big relation to portuguese and general ranking.
It?s true that last 2 seasons Portugal missed a lot the only team that could be seeded in UC R1. Last year they would be in pot 1 or 2 in group stages; this season pot 2 or 3 if were there; next season is their last chance, still seeded in R1 but probably 4th or 3rd with luck in group stage.
About Pacheco i agree with Sofisticação. By the way, i don?t see in him a great coach, just an ex-player with some knowledge of the game that train with players and make them run a lot and pay atention in defense. I can?t see this return as a good thing for Boavista. Time is diferent, meanwhile Pacheco just acomulated losses!
It?s too soon to say about the european spots for next year. Best thing for Portugal is top3 as usual; Boavista, Braga (specially if gets seeded) and other team (in my opinion Guimarães by Cup if came back to 1st division meanwhile or other club except Nacional). Meanwhile still think Portugal will end up the season in the same place it is and next year with 1/2 seeded clubs in UC things may be diferent. Next year i guess Romania will have unseeded teams too more than 3 with not so many qualifying rounds. Watch out for NL of course... But this way Portugal can manage to maintain position for next year. Always with 3 unseeded in UC no!

So, i came to the idea that, most important of all Boavista are the most responsable for a possible portuguese loss of 6th position. I know they tried to get in UC year after year and finished almost there but... the INTERTOTO!? Why there was no portuguese club in intertoto? Boavista had that possibility but never wanted. I?d like to confrontate Boavista leaders about that subject... After one and two years missing UC for very litlle (for clubs with clearly less chances in that competition)... after the access to UC by intertoto being changed to a most acessible format... what if in the last year with 2002/03 points Boavista fail again? Enter the Intertoto Cup or not (and if so why?)...
By the way, not only Boavista but much other clubs in Portugal should try to take part in Intertoto. For me it?s a shame that only Portugal is not represented.

Porto - you make an interesting point. Although some sceptics have suggested Portugal "benefit" from not having an IT team (total points divided by 6 not 7) it's also true that a potentially stronger team could've taken that route and increased their coefficient.

I don't really understand why no team would want to participate but then the English have had a pretty negative reaction to the competition over the years too.

I was looking at the IT "regions" for some reason yesterday & I did realise that - if Portugal did enter next year they might well be in the same section as Romania. I thought it would be quite amusing if the teams (assuming two unseeded & inexperienced teams) met in Intertoto R3. A lot of fans would be torn between wanting to show their "league superiority" and being "pleased" they lost because of the potential benefit to their coefficient by having essentially two less teams to divide their coefficient by compared to the opponent if they won!

Well, probably in the Romania side things can be as that but unfortunly few portuguese people seem to care about coefficients. Last years that is more public but still only a litlle number of people knows what they are talking about when they use the word "ranking"... And afterwards uefa cup games by smaller clubs usually can?t be watched in t.v.!

A 7th club for Portugal could not be as bad as some people can think. Even it?s another team (unseeded in UCR1) the probability of bieing one of the 11 of IT is considerable and any portuguese club would be seeded in UC QR. Probability of any top12 portuguese club of progressing throw IT and QR is quite good so i would take the risk. By reaching the UCR1 a club would reach 2/3 points having the chance to do more (greater chance if Boavista in fact).
