| 1. H 2. Auxerre, Tottenham, Sevilla,Parma,Blackburn,Ajax,PSG,Palermo
Dutch teams: AZ: Has as Dinamo B. last match away against strongest (already qualified) team. Braga best chances for qualification. First match =....AZ-Braga! Heerenveen. Their hopes are that before last match Lens is qualified. This is possible as Lens receives Parma and Osasuna. Heerenveen needs to get a point agaisnst either of these 2 away. Feyenoord:Blackburn is my favorite in this group. Feyenoord has to visit Basel and Nancy, the other 2 contenders (I don't think Wisla can), so has to score points in away games. Hard, but the teams are not the greatest. Ajax: receives Espanyol, the greatest rival for the first spot. Zulte might benefit from a not inspired Ajax. |

Edited by: noppenaaldhakken at: 03-10-2006, 17:07 | I did some calculations based on previous results (domestic and european), current form and my own expectations. *home-away characteristic not yet included This was the outcome: Chances of progressing
Group A Auxerre 75,9% Rangers 67,6% Partizan 59,6% Livorno 56,3% M Haifa 40,6%
Auxerre seems sure. Results are not too optimistic for M. Haifa
Group B Leverkussen 59,1% Cl Brugge 56,8% Besiktas 59,8% Din. Bucarest 62,5% Tot. Hotspurs 61,8%
Most equal group I have ever seen in the (short) UC group stage history. Group C Sevilla 83,0% AZ Alkmaar 69,0% Sl Liberec 57,9% Grasshoppers 45,4% Sp. Braga 44,6%
Seems pretty straightforward. Sp. Braga could however create an upset. Group D Parma 65,7% Lens 73,0% Heerenveen 60,1% Osasuna 62,7% Odense 38,4%
Odense will be the key factor. Despite Danisch football is on the rise (e.g. Kopenhagen win against Ajax) dropping points against them will probably be lethal. Group E Feyenoord 67,2% Basel 70,4% Wisla Krakow 48,4% Blackburn 61,6% Nancy 52,4%
In my head Nancy has a better chance. But that is statistics for you Group F Ajax 79,0% Sparta Prague 62,7% Espanyol 66,8% Austria Wien 54,6% Zulte Waregem 36,9% Group G Pananthinaikos 67,4% PSG 67,1% Rap. Well as for the pure numbers. I always think they should add up to 100% not 300%. I know there are three places available but still I think the overall percentage should be 100.
Ignoring that fact. At first glance I'd say Basle are very overrated & Partizan & Rapid at least a little overrated. |

when determining the winner the percentages should indeed ad up to 100%. I however stated that I calculated the chances to progress for each team. At the beginning of a group (assuming the teams are equal) each team has a 3/5 (60%) chance to go to the next round. Making it a total of 300% per group. I know it may look weird but unless you know a better method this is the most valuable way to present information. I agree with you that Basel feels overrated in my prior post however Basel beat Feyenoord 1-0 in their last meeting in 2004 (does anybody know of other matches in this years group stage that have history?) and reached the quarter finals last year. Both Feyenoord, Blackburn and Wisla lost in their last appearance in the 1st round respectively against Rapid Bucarest, Genclerbirligi and Vitoria Guimaraes. Their recent european history therefore speaks in their favour see the european results of the last 5 years (this year included) of group E P G W D L GF GA GD PPG Feyenoord (Rotterdam Ned 5 24 9 7 8 27 24 +3 1,42 FC Basel Sui 5 50 22 12 16 75 69 +6 1,56 TS Wisla Kraków Pol 5 32 15 6 11 65 44 +21 1,59 Blackburn Rovers Eng 3 8 1 4 3 10 13 -3 0,88 AS Nancy Lorraine Fra 1 2 1 0 1 3 2 +1 1,50
Maybe we both don't see FC Basel as a major threat. The statistics however say otherwise (also to my surprise!).
@ others
It seems a lot of people are surprised by the high percentage for Rapid Bucarest. So was I as I can still remember sitting in front of the TV in unbelieve watching the unknown Rapid eliminating (former?) giant Feyenoord. Rapid fans will probably not admit it but Feyenoord was the better team over 2 games despite playing very badly. Psychologists are still researching Serginho Greene over what happened that night as he dove at the ball in the penalty box like Gordon Banks in his best days. All this with no apparent reason. Since Greene is a defender and not a goalkeeper this caused a totally unneccesary penalty which was converted by Rapid. Greene later claimed he slipped and landed on the ball while everybody could see he thought he was MJ for a moment. Why he thought that is still a mystery. If it had remained 0-0 Rapid would have been eliminated. Rapid's european run therefore almost didn't happen. But it did and a good run it was. None of the teams in it's current group has achieved something like this in the last couple of years. Even the list of the last 5 years EC-results shows no evidence to think that Rapid is overrated.
P G W D L GF GA GD PPG Panathinaikos FC Gre 5 36 13 9 14 43 54 -11 1,33 Paris Saint-Germain Fra 3 14 7 3 4 14 10 +4 1,71 UFC Rapid Bucuresti Rom 4 28 17 6 5 47 16 +31 2,04 Hapoel Tel-Aviv Isr 3 14 7 2 5 21 13 +8 1,14 FK Mladá Boleslav Cze 1 6 2 2 2 12 12 +0 1,33
Personally i think Panathinaikos and PSG will be stronger. Maybe my calculations for the percentages are based too much on recent european results.
Question: why are a lot of people so optimistic about the israeli teams? In my calculations they have the lowest chance of surviving apart from Zulte and Odense. |

Edited by: Lyonnais at: 03-10-2006, 23:05 | Israeli teams had good results in the first round (vs. decent opponents); it is thus logical that some believe in them.
Same for Rapid. Reaching the quarters last yer was a great performance, and although they struggled in the first round vs. a team that is not very known, Rapid fans have some perfectly valid arguments to believe in their chances. By the way, Niculae scored a very beautiful goal for Auxerre last week-end. His first goal which will help favour his adaptation.
And don't forget the Czech team too. They scored 4 goals to Marseille. As much as Marseille's last 8 opponents in the French League!
In other terms, Pana and PSG will have to play their best football to advance in this group.
Generaly speaking, I find the UEFA Cup pretty interesting this year. Groups B and H are terrible.
Otherwise, your stats are interesting. I admit that it is a bit weird to sometimes see the 5 teams get more than 50% chances to advance (e.g. group B), but I agree that it is difficult to do in an other way. |

| I don't understand how you can say that Rapid's performance last year doesn't mean anything. It is true that they are struggling at the moment, but they reached the group stage with two wins in the end, which is better than last year. Don't try to compare Israel to Romania, you just cannot! Israel had probably one good performance in their entire history at European level and stayed in the top 15 for a couple of years. However, their best country coefficient was less than half of Romania's coefficient last year. AFAIK, Israel has never even been involved in the battle for 10th place, let alone 6th, so it was really no surprise to anyone that their teams were weak again soon after. You seem very confident that Hapoel will win against Rapid, but maybe you should now that here in Romania everyone considers Hapoel the weakest team in the group by far and Rapid will surely go for the 3 points against them. Everyone respects Mlada Boleslav very much and knows that it is a much stronger opponent than the coefficient shows, but Hapoel is considered a sure bet for 5th place. There are even voices who are saying that the match could be played on neutral ground, which is always a question with Israel. This is not another post that hails the Romanian teams, it's just about a few facts. My personal view is that Rapid will have a very difficult trip to Israel, against a decent team, but I think at least a draw is perfectly possible for the Romanians. |

Nice to see someone so confident in their "percentages".
My own predictions.
Group A
I think will be extremely close. I give Auxerre a fractional edge in the group and make Partizan a slight outsider.
Auxerre, Rangers & Haifa to progress. Livorno close though. It might come down to goal difference from 2nd to 4th.
Group B
If there's going to be a "weak link" in the group it will be Club Brugge.
Leverkusen, Spurs & Dinamo to progress as long as Spurs avoid defeat in Turkey. If Besiktas win that it could be very tight between those two & Dinamo for 2nd & 3rd behind Leverkusen.
Group C
Easy for Sevilla & AZ. I fancy Slovan Liberec to grab third - either with two draws to open or a narrow win in Portugal.
Group D.
I take Heerenveen (who are becoming seasoned UEFA Cup campaigners) to edge Parma out of the top three. Lens & Osasuna also to qualify. Odense can help Heerenveen by starting with a surprise win against the Italians.
Group E
I can't fancy Basle or Wisla on current form. Nancy might prove the best team in the group. Feyenoord can be third with a couple of draws & a last match win.
Group F
Comfortable for Ajax & Espanyol. Less comfortable for austria Wien but they can edge third ahead of Sparta.
Group G
Another close group - though Hapoel may be a slight underdog.
I have PSG, rapid & Mlada Boleslav edging out Panathinaikos but it'll go down to the wire.
Group H
Despite this looking very tough on paper I have Palermo, Newcastle & Celta Vigo qualifying fairly comfortably. I have the feeling the Germans might not be as good as people think (a deceptive score against the 9 men of Brondby) & the draw has been unkind to Fener. Newcastle or Celta at home I'd give them a win & a fair chance of being in the mix - but I see Palermo as the best team in the group, home or away. |

| Group A : Auxerre, Rangers and Livorno. But Livorno needs to get some point in Belgrade to qualify.
Group B : Tottenham, Brugge and Leverkusen. The 3 teams are winning their 2 matchs at home, Besiktas draw 2 time at home, and Leverkusen get 1 point in Bucarest.
Group C : Sevilla, AZ and Braga : Sevilla is strong enough to qualify, even with their bad home-away. AZ and Braga are playing Sevilla away, that's why they'll make the difference.
Group D : Osasuna, Heereveen and Parma : Odense seems a bit too weak, and Lens plays at home versus Parma and Osasuna, that's why i don't see them qualifying.
Group E : Blackburn, Basel and Feyenoord. Well, Blackburn and Basel should qualify, and the battle will be close between Nancy and Feyenoord. But playing the last match at home is probably a big advantage for the dutch.
Group F : Ajax, Espanyol and Zulte. I want tomake my 'romanian' Ajax seems stronger than the 4 others teams, but Zulte playing at home versus ajax (probably already qualified) could give them a chance to win, and qualify Espanyol is playing the é 'weak' teams at home, that's why they should qualify.
Group G : PSG, Panathinaikos and Rapid. Well, the 3 teams seem stronger, but Hapoel and Mladá Boleslav could be surprises in 1 match, and change the cards.
Group H : Celta, Newcastle and Palermo. Tough group, Palermo needs to get points away to qualify, but they are able to do it. |

in the clubs world ranking by IFFHS(1st October 2005 - 29th September 2006),pls look where are placed Rapid Bucuresti and then you may supose things about this team:
1. (2.) Sevilla FC España/4 287,0 2. (1.) FC Barcelona España/4 281,0 3. (5.) Milan AC Italia/4 271,0 4. (7.) Liverpool FC England/4 269,0 5. (8.) Arsenal FC London England/4 262,0 (6.) ...for exemple, last year in UC, Rapid Bucuresti played 10 matches at home = 9 wins and 1 draw with Steaua in Quarter finals...(last year , they are home record in UC)...so I still remind you this matches :
OR1 Rapid - Saint Julia 5-0 QR2 Rapid - Vardar Skopje 3-0 R1 Rapid - Feyernoord 1-0 Groupe Stage: Rapid-Rennais 2-0 Rapid - PAOK 1- 0 R2 Rapid - Hertha 2-0 R3 Rapid - Hamburger SV 2- 0 QF Rapid - Steaua 1-1
so, they are unbeaten last year on home stadium (17-1)...
...and this season, until now:
QR1 Rapid - Sliema Wanderers 5-0 QR2 Rapid - FK Sarajevo 2-0 R1 Rapid - Nacional Madeira 1-0
...now ,I hope you accept that Rapid are a very strong team ,specialy on home stadium in UC competition... |
