Biggest Upset in the Third Qualifying Round

Which team do you think will stage the biggest upset in this round?

My money is on Boleslav. They will pass to the groups stage with such an ease.

Depends on what you define as an upset Is Osasuna beating HSV an upset?

I'd say that HSV v Osasuna is a 60:40 or 55:45 pairing and I wouldn't call it an upset if Osasuna advanced (although I'd be very sad about it). But what about Hearts beating AEK? Would that be an upset? And Levski v Chievo - who's the favourite?

I think there will be a few surprises. Could be the most exciting qualifying round ever. For example, I'm not so sure about Arsenal beating Zagreb. And I'll keep my fingers crossed for Salzburg and Crvena Zvezda.

There are a lot of Central-Eastern clubs in the competition and I hope as many of them will make it to the Group Stage (and of course I hope Steaua will be among them)

I guess from a Portuguese side we can have a great upset with Benfica. Most users think it will be an easy ride against Austria but this pre season Benfica is sucking:

Benfica 2-3 Sion
Benfica 0-3 Sporting Lisbon
Benfica 0-1 Deportivo Coruņa
AEK Athens 3 - 1 Benfica

I guess this doesn't look good, for a team who is suposed to start the season tomorrow!!!
My only positive point is that Austria Wien Is not winning also in the Austrian League so, I guess both teams are in terrible shape!!!
I fear for Benfica and I'm start wondering that whichever of these 2 teams go to group stage can be a disaster there, if they keep doing what they're doing.

well, Austria had a lot of difficult games until now. but the last two matches were quite good. they played 1-1 against Salzburg and the leader Tirol Innsbruck.
the players will be very motivated, i hope they'll do well. if i had to bet, i would say the match will end 0:0.

@Salzburg - Valencia:
Alex Zickler scored in this season already 8 goals (7 in league, 1 in EC). 3 of them were out of penalties. he also scored in the CL-finals of 2001 versus Valencia in the penalty shootout. maybe he repeat this at Wednesday?

I hope you are right about Boleslav, though I fear your optimism may be misplaced. They might win but expecting them to progress "with ease" against Galatasaray is expecting a lot.

In order to predict the "biggest upset" I guess there first has to be a consensus on which games are apparently the most easy to predict. Then the first of those that could produce the opposite result is the biggest surprise.

On paper defeats for Arsenal, Liverpool, Milan, Valencia, Lille and CSKA Moscow would all come as big surprises to most people. Of these teams I'd consider Arsenal (for reasons I've stated elsewhere) and Valencia (have possibly the most dangerous opponent) as the most vulnerable. I'd still expect all six of these teams to progress though.

Of the other 10 games I'd probably put Galatasaray and Shakhtor Donetsk as the next "most likely" winners. I'd support the underdog in both these games but still (reluctantly) expect the favourites to win.

So maybe the biggest upset is Austria Wien over Benfica. AliceAG isn't optimistic and considering only 2 of the 8 Portuguese teams to enter the qualifying rounds in the past seven seasons have made the group stage she could well be right...

I believe biggest upsets:

Levski
Boleslav
Copenhagen
Liberec

By the way: I hope at Standard which is not an upset but they played so weak the last two matches in domestic league, so that I have to admit that our Romanian friends have better chances... I hope Standard will be ready for UEFA group with the new guys (Conceicao, Sa Pinto, Onyewu and perhaps Postiga)

Dinamo Zagreb to beat Arsenal.

Levski or Standard winning would not be a shock !

Haifa to beat (Liverpool+UEFA), playing 2 matches away will be a shock for me. Haifa players will defiantivley become higher terorist targets that they were before, and Liverpool players will be release to play in UC, a competition which do not attract so much interest from the terorists, like the all mighty UEFA elite, CL.

But, then again, this will mean more trouble for UEFA, with programming the CLGS games of Haifa. I wonder if these UEFA guys are allowed to bet?

Well, Rabotnichki in the GS would be a shock indeed. Not that this will happen. They are already on my wishlist as one of the best possible opponents for UEFA R1.

I would consider Rabotniki Skopje as the biggest surprise, as I think their encounter with OSC Lille is the most one-sided affair. There are quite a few seeded teams which would represent great shocks should they exit at this early stage, but Lille has the weakest opponent by far, at least on paper. I would be very surprised indeed to see the Macedonian champions in the group stage.

@STK - 2 matches away would mean both in Liverpool. One will be a neutral venue, be it Kiev, Sofia, Bucuresti or wherever. It's not Liverpool's fault that Israeli government is so gung-ho.... and Liverpool won't be the first to benefit from Israel's actions this season.

If you define setup by where the unseeded will win, then Fenerbahce, Austria Wien, Osasuna, Chievo, Hearts all make a chance of a upset. All I would not qualify as a big upset. Others I would.
But which of them is likely to happen? Kobenhavn maybe, Dinamo Zagreb, Legia....
History shows that always a couple of unseeded teams win (3 or 4, I don't remember and the database-page of this site is not working currently)

Okay, I guess we can forget about Dinamo Zagreb... Arsenal have scored twice in 2 minutes: 0-1 Fabregas 63', 0-2 van Persie 64'. And another one by van Persie on 79 minutes. Final score: 0-3.

Dinamo will now have a very steep mountain to climb at Highb... err... Emirates.
