Looking at the recent form of Spartak Moscow in the Russian league, Sheriff will have a hard time in this tie.

If anyone of you know the attendances of the second leg-matches in UCL Q1 I would be very happy to know!

In addition to that i'm only missing just 2 attendances from the 1st leg-matches:

F91 Dudelange - FK Rabotnicki Nis
Birkirkara FC - B36 Tórshavn

I would be very delighted if I can get the attendances of these two matches too.

How many times over the last 3 seasons have people posted that an Irish clubs result was a surprise

Shels v Split,Deportivo,Lille,Steaua
Cork v Malmo,Djurgarden,Apollon
Derry v IFK Goteburg

I think the lowly position of 38th is false and in two years time we will be around the 30 mark where I think we are at the moment.

Attendance of Apollon Limassol - Cork City was 5668.

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today

Some reasons for Apollon Limassol becoming the first Cypriot team ever to be disqualified in champions league 1stQR were:

1. They were not at all prepared since no official games played yet, seazon begins August 12th and they only played 3-4 minor friendly games none of them in Cyprus.

2. Both the commitee and the coach highly underestimated the Irish team and even after losing 1-0 in the fist game they kept talking about an easy win.

3. The second game was playing in neutral Nicosia GSP stadium, the only stadium in Cyprus eligible for european games.

maranton, in your opinion, is Omonia stronger than Apollon? Have they prepared better for the season? From what i understand you are Omonia fan. How many people is expected next Thursday against Rijeka? Is GSP their stadium?

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today

In my oppinion Omonia is more dangerous than Apollon. Andone ( was Dinamo's Bucharest coach ) said that Omonia has strengthend a lot this year, and that they can play as equal against Dinamo. Last year Dinamo was close to be eliminated by Omonia, Niculescu's free-kick saved Dinamo.

Well, Dinamo Zagreb beat Omonoia 6:1 two weeks ago in friendly match, so it is hard for me to understand what is so special about them. Maybe Dinamo is so strong. I sure hope so.

Some good news for the Cypriots, Dinamo trashed Rijeka yesterday in Croatian Super Cup 4:1, Rijeka scored the only goal by accident after terrible mistake of Dinamo's goalkeeper and couldn't do anything more. You can see the goals on this link.

If Omonoia is as strong as everybody says, they shouldn't have problems with this Rijeka squad.

Oxtales,
I repeat my request under this topic: could you please share your list of attendances in the different cups here. I'm sure lots of people are interested, among them me. Thanks.

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today

Cro_nogomet, don't pay too much atention to these friendlies, because they don't reflect the value of a team, they are just experiments in squad or tactics... I can say that Omonia is a big trouble for any seeded team.

P.S. I have an off-yopic question:
I am very curious about different languages, and I'd like to know if nogomet is a Croatian word, what does it mean?. For example in Romanian there is a word Haiduc which represent rebel characters like Robin Hood, then I've heard the club HAJDUK Split.

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today
Author: Cro_nogomet
Date: 20-07-2006, 20:39
It's simple. "nogomet" means "football". that's why all Croatian clubs have NK before their names. NK = nogometni klub.

Nogomet is word for football also in Slovenia and Croatian parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

And Hajduk Split is as far as I know the oldest Hajduk in Europe. They are founded by that name in 1911. And it means exactly what you said.

Tnanks, Cro_nogomet !!! Your info is very interesting ! I know Russian language, and I now understand the similarity of these two language:

Croatian Russian English
nogo noga foot
met meatch ball (I suppose)

Best regards,

Serge

actually, we also say 'noga' for the English word 'foot' like Russians or Serbs do. I'm not exactly sure where that sufix "-met" had come from (it doesn't mean 'ball', we have a different word for that - 'lopta') but it goes with prefix 'nogo-" and not "noga-".

That reminds me, I always wanted to know why the Serbian language doesn't have the word 'nogomet' instead of 'fudbal'. On the other hand, they do have the word 'rukomet' like we do (which means 'handball') but not 'nogomet'.

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today
Author: ignjat63
Date: 20-07-2006, 21:30
cro, I think -met is short for "meta" which means target. That is the only explanation that I think makes sense.

We do not have a definite rule for using foreign words. Sometimes we translate them sometimes we do not. So it is fudbal but also odbojka. Vaterpolo but also košarka.

I cannot say if Omonia is better team than Apollon but is definately better prepared. The fact that we were unseeded in uefa QR1 forced our training team to prepare the team much faster than the begining of Cypriot league on 12th of August unlike Apollon who clearly underestimated Cork even after their defeat in the first match.

Moreover Omonia had some unlucky results in the last 2 uefa cup competitions and combined with the good results of Apoel and Anorthosis last year forced the players and the commitee to aim firstly for a good performance in europe and then the championship.

Yes Omonia's home ground is GSP stadium in Nicosia and attendance is expected to be 15000. The good result in the first game will produce a hot atmosphere from the fans. However been a european game will mean that no violence will occur and Rijeka's fans and players will be treated with hospitality and respect the same they gave us on the first match.

As far as the frendly games as concerned Omonia lost 6-1 from Dinamo Zagreb some hours after the draw with Rijeka whose people spied the match. Omonia also played friendlies with Publicum winning 2-0 and drew 0-0 with Marimbor both games in Marimbor stadium.

Thank you, maranton, for your reply.

15.000 people expected you say? Huh... that's gonna be tough one for Rijeka. I hope they wouldn't embarass themselves with some high defeat. If they're going to play like yesterday in Super Cup, I'm afraid that's exactly what'll happen.

I have no details from the matches in Intertoto Cup. The last 4-5 years i have checked up on match details from the Intertoto Cup, but every time i finished with the conclusion, that it's nearly impossible to collect all the attendances. Unfortunately.

Of course i would like to collect the Intertoto Cup too, but i already spend a enormous time to collect the attendances from the UEFA Cup and the CL. Later on in these tournaments it would not be a problem to collect the attendances, but here in the first qualification rounds, there's a lot of small teams with poor websites and scattered informations. I have the passion, but not the time

Now i'm begging all of you to spend just two minutes each every matchday to find the attendances from the matches that involved teams from your country in the different EC's, and share them here at the forum. It would be fantastic if we can collect them all!

I wonder what the smallest attendance ever at a European tie is?
Sky Sports Football Annual gives attendances going back over several seasons so I will have a look, but 200 is my guess, anyone aware of any lower than that?

Charging 20 euros a seat, that would generate 4,000 euros, hardly enough for the plane fares for the return leg!

Re: UCL Q1 second leg today

What counts towards attendance figures?

Does it include press and other non-paying customers or just "paying guests". If the latter then I assume some official attendances must be zero (games played behind closed doors?).

A similar question (though very off topic - sorry!). How are ground capacity figures arrived at? I did some work a while back compiling figures for most of the English league grounds - using official sites, a number of "stadium guide" sites and various other sources. I often found it difficult to arrive at a conclusive final figure. I assume there are a number of reasons for this: (a) simple inaccuracy on some sites, (b) the capacities change more often than the sites are updated and (c) the method of arriving at the final figure is different - how are areas like press allocation, hospitality boxes and even disabled places counted?

exile, as you mention ticket prices, for Red Star - Cork City prices will be: 300 dinars North and South stands, 600 East stand (I will park my bottom there) and 800 dinars West stand. 800 dinnars is roughly 10 euro.
