Edited by: sampfan at: 18-06-2006, 13:18 | Please visit http://attendance.18.to/ and fill in the survey. It will take you less than 5 minutes.
This survey's intention is to figure out which are the main reasons for attending football matches. The results of the survey will be compared with average attendances throughout european football leagues for the past 5 seasons.
Mainly, a connection between clubs' performance in European competitions or in national leagues and attendance of their home matches is tried to be found. I know that the forum's main purpose is UEFA competitions coefficients but as you will see the survey's goal is to observe whether there is a relationship between the coefficients and the attendance.
Many thanks in advance for your answers.

| There is a question about increasing average attendance.
The best-supported clubs sell out their tickets, and there is no way of increasing the attendance without getting a new and bigger stadium. |

| This is not entirely correct - even the most popular and the most financially stable teams do not have an average equal to the full capacity of their stadiums. Here are the numbers for last season. There are, of course, some exceptions - teams whose average is as close as possible to the full capacity.
Anyway, the general case is difference between average attendances when two consequtive seasons are compared for one and the same team. Even if they didn't enlarge their stadiums.

| In England and Scotland most if the top clubs are at 90% or more of capacity - Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea, Celtic and Rangers.
This was not the case back in the 1960s and 70s when all these clubs had grounds of capacity from 50 to 80 thousand and average attendances much lower than capacity. |

| I gaher, Rangers stadium used to have about 125000 spectators or so. Now the number is much smaller as it is an all-seats stadium. Do you guys from Scotland/England think that "all seats" rule was really necessary? In the case of Red Star and Partizan stadiums for example, the rule was not necessary at all. It is just smaller number of spectators, that's all.No need for safety benefit, really. |

| For attendances for more than 30 countries and 60 leagues go to : EFS. You can also find some historical figures. |

| I'm sure all seats was NOT necessary, but after people are killed, the authorities must be seen to be extra careful. However, it has also helped changed the image of football in England- it is more family-friendly than before and hooliganism is less. |

| The old type British stadium was not a place for families. No chance to get to the toilets, so a beer can had to be used instead! The swaying of the crowd could be alarming as well. I was at Hampden in a crowd of 85,000 - with 135,000 it must have been frightening.
When the crowds were smaller than capacity it was possible for hooligans to do "cavalry" charges at opposing fans.
Barriers and seats might not be traditional, but they changed football for the better as a spectator sport. |

| If it has also changed how English fans behave abroad (we know that Scottish fans have always been among the most welcome and popular in the world) then that's an excellent thing - so far so good at the WC. |

| Ibrox used to hold in excess of 100,000. The record attendance is over 118,000. In fact Rangers are the only British club to have played to 100,000 plus crowds in domestic matches. |

... surely there were 2 teams in each of the relevant matches? |

| Well there is actually four if i catch your drift. Rangers have played to 100,000 plus crowds against Celtic , Hearts and Hibs. In fact there have been as many ton plus crowds for games aginst the Edinburgh pair as there has been for Old Firm games. |
