2 Scottish teams in Intertoto?

Is this article correct that Scotland will get a second place if one of the other countries doesn't enter a team.

I thought the first place would go to Spain, France, england etc. All i can think of is that the country possibly not putting a team forward must be from the countries entering in the second round so Scotland get the extra place as the country top of the coefficient of teams entering in 2nd round.

is this correct?

The source of this news article appears to be genuine. It fits in the usual way UEFA communicates these matters with the associations. Of coarse, it remains unsure whether the details are correct.

Some points:

1) As assumed by most of us the 3 groups are based on the starting round. So Spain, Scotland, and Romania are the countries that will first be offered an extra place in case of a vacant berth in a group.

2) The article is in accordance with UEFA publications: The additional team from this association will then enter the first round of the competition, irrespective of the association's ranking. It remains unclear how that will affect the match schedule.

3) Caledonian Thistle finished at place 8 in the SPL. That is 5 places behind the last UEFA Cup spot (Rangers at rank 3). Until now UEFA said that Intertoto teams must finish within 4 places of the last UEFA Cup spot.

re: Inverness CT. They actually finished seventh, so they are within four places of the last UEFA cup spot.

Maybe they were 8th when the league split?

After the split, the bottom half (ICT was in this) leader is 7th, but since it plays all the other bottom half teams, it often gets more points than the last team in the top half (as this year).

The formula for who plays where after the split (one game against each side in yr half, but it might be either home or away) is complicated, but more so for the top half, because of the attraction of Celtic and Rangers games.

Sorry, skip my point 3. Just looked at rsssf, but forgot to scroll down to see the result after the split.

How does the coefficient points work next year in relation to intertoto participants. Do they get any points for winning games in the intertoto cup under the new format.

Also, is the country coefficient divided by the total number of teams including intertoto participants.

Sorry to ask here but couldn't find details on this on here.

It appears not - but logically, they should count - at the same rate as UEFA Cup qualifiers (0.5 points for a draw, 1 for a win). It appears UEFA are thinking of merging the 2 competitions anyway.

@ianmorrison

Intertoto has never counted for the coefficient so far, so I don't think it will now. Just the results of the 11 winners in the UEFA-cup will count (same as from the 3 winners untill now).
