| Although in common parlance away goals count 'double' they don't, because a single extra home goal overcomes the advantage. So an away goal is worth more than a home goal, but by less than one goal. In 2-leg ties where the Away Goal rule applies the effective position is that the nth away goal is worth 1 + 1/2^n. Thus first away goal = 1.5. second away goal = 1.25, third away goal = 1.125, etc. |

Edited by: drcgian at: 07-11-2005, 17:03 | In fact away goals in 2nd tie games count exactly as home ones. But... In case aggregate score is equal the more away goals decide the qualifying team.
e.g. teams A and B were tied together
A-B 1-0 B-A 2-1
Agg. score A-B: 2-2 Away goals A-B: 1-0 So team A qualifies. |

| AvB 1v0 converts to 1v0 (no away goal) BvA 2v1 converts to 2v 1.5 Aggregate adjusted score A = 2.5 v B = 2. Try it with higher scores - it works elegantly. |

| drcgian, you are right, but MalcomW's post just try to give a mathematic formulation of how much does an away goal is worth.
Just to go a bit further, any formula like this should work: Value of nth away goal = 1 + An with An > 0, amd sum(n=1,inf)An {= 1
This is valid for 2 teams play-offs, but not for tie break with more than 2 teams (like in the CL group phase). |

| @ Malcolm - I've always thought of it this way: Away goals count double, but only if both teams have scored the same number of goals on aggregate. |
