A global Champions League, please?

Why is it that club football is so focused on continental tournaments, where the national teams have a World Cup encompassing the entire globe? Shouldn?t it be more fun if UEFA Cup and Champions League at least once every second, third or fourth year was international (maybe with a different name for the cups)? That is, teams from all over the world had a chance to qualify for the tournament? Then maybe the club-football would be a bit less Europe-centric, and clubs from other parts of the world would be famous and could make money?

No, please not. For that we have the World Club Championship now.

And also the practical things are a objection. You can't expect teams from Europe flying to America, East Asia, Australia or the Southern part of Africa between 2 matches in their national league.
That's much to tiring for the players (and much to expensive for the fans).

Only thing you can do is expend the WCC a bit, but there is not much room in the calendar for that. Only time you could do that is in the summers of the odd years.

It needn't be that difficult. Back in the 50s and 60s teams flew back and forth across the Atlantic for tours and friendlies. Pele would play up to 100 games a season, bearing in mind that travelling to an away game in Brazil outside the local Sao Paulo league was a big undertaking in itself. In fact before the 2nd world war clubs would think nothing of packing their bags and going by BOAT to/from Brazil, Argentina etc! Or are modern players not as tough as the old timers?

The Copa Liberatadores involves long distances - Mexico City to Buenos Aires, for example, is not much shorter than, say, Milan to Rio de Janeiro.

The CL could go "global" at Round 2 - 1 extra round required. Why not?

o yeah , it could go globaly. Why everybody keep saying when it comes to intercontinental tournaments, that "its long distance.. bla bla, bla" . Remember folks, we are living in modern time, you fly around the world in 10 hours, its not like use to be 60 years ago when you took the ship for months...

I don't think that's a good idea. There are such competitions in other continents as well. And the distances are really too big. Besides, as Forza-AZ has already stated, there is a World Club Championship, although it's only for the winners of the continental competitions.

European clubs traditionnally don't give a shit to the Intercontinental Cup or the newly World Championship. I don't like this behaviour. They give the impression that they just behave like the FA used to behave with the WC in early days, stating that the competition was not tough enough to waste their time in those cups.
I have the chance to see the Copa Libertadores and believe me, these teams are good and winning the Libertadores is not easier than winning the Champions League.

I however believe that this new World Championship is a good compromise. I would love to have 2 additional participants (from UEFA and CONMEBOL) so that the World Champion wins at least 3 games to help this competition to be institutionalized but that's a good start.
I would also like this tournament to happen every year in a different continent (e.g.next year in Africa, the following year in North America, then in Oceania, Europe, South America, etc.).

it would be very good to see the wcc in other continents too

it's not easy to watch the games live in europe, as it's sometime in the morning or early afternoon (I've got the same problem with skiing races there, they are at 3 or 4 in the morning)

and for the point with the 2 more teams of uefa and conmebol, maybe fifa is waiting some years to implement something like the uefa-coefficient system to give the 2 extra places to the best 2 associations

Since the 60's the winner off the European Champions league plays a play-off against the winner off the Copa de Liberatadores, the South-American Champions League, since the late 70's one match in Tokio before that they'd many otter systems, but alleways a play-off in 2 ore 3 matches.

In januari 2000 there was played a tournement with 8 clubteams off all the six continents played in Brazil. The European teams ware Manchester United and Real Madrid.

But I don't know sure the names of the otter 6 teams and the results at that tournement can some-one tell me more about that!?!?

And after that tournement that tournement has been never played agains, the exact reason why I don't know?!?? can some-one tell
me more about that?!!?

I've readed in a Newspaper, more than a jear agow there are plans to helt an otter tournement in 2007 ore 2008, but the exactly deatails
I don't know, maybe some-body els can me tell about that!?!?

Thank's for it!!!

Iwan
I hesitate to give you this info, 'cos it might set you off AGAIN!
Presumably you were too young in 2000 to be aware of it????

In finishing order:

Group A
Corinthians / Real Madrid /Al-Nassr / Raja Casablanca

Group B
Vasco da Gama / Necaxa / Manchester United / South Melbourne

Both the third place playoff and the final went to penalties, the latter after a 0-0 draw.
