Hi all,

does the team still exist?
I can find it in the UEFA team ranking but not in the 1st/2nd
Swedish League. Has the team a new name or does not more exist?

Cheers Marius

Yes it does exists , last year it was relegated to swedish second division , but this year (spring - fall) they won that tournament and they are back in top league. Though they experiencing some financial problems and some key players want to leave.

AIK Solna is the official name.

Anita - just because rsssf.com says so doesn't mean it's official.

The offical name is AIK. Nothing more, nothing less. AIK.

However, in Europe, foreign media usually add Stockholm or Solna. Since this is just a suffix to place the team geographically, neither of them is right, but neither of them is better or worse. No-one in Sweden calls the team antyhing else than AIK. AIK are called AIK Stockholm just as much as Arsenal are called Arsenal London.

Third in the Swedish all-time table, they are the team with the most seasons in the top division: 77 (IFK Göteborg 73, Malmö FF 70). So in a very rare situation, they were relegated in 2004, but swept through the 2nd division this year and are now back where they belong, as they are one of the most watched and talked about clubs in the country and always draw crowds. Almost every team in this year's Superettan saw unusually big attendances when AIK came to visit.

If you go to the site of the Swedish Football Association, it's not so hard to find the team. Here's the fixture list for this season's Superettan (ended in October):

(The rsssf page mentioned earlier is full of spelling errors)

Andresco, sorry, I presume (know) you are right. I have never used or heard any other name than AIK, and RSSSF have a lot of (peculiar) errors. Several soccer sites also mention "Rosenborg Trondheim". Yes, that is the city, but the official name of the club is Rosenborg Ballklubb (RBK).

This is complex question. Indeed it should be called AIK (Stockholm).

But there are some cautions !

AIK has more or less same meaning as Maccabi in Israel or Real in Spain.
Luckily AIK represented only by one club in football from Stockholm (at least in top3 levels) so even saying AIK is Ok.
However ! in general there are several AIKs all over the Sweden (not only in football). For example in third league there is club called
AIK Visby which is not "farm" club in any respect. But it can be called AIK (Visby).

Further - the worse
Even each team from administative district of Stockholm can be called AIK, it happened to be that mentioned allsvenska AIK originally played in Solna, so the title was AIK Solna. So if the team from south-west Stockholm also called AIK will manage to get into main frame from currently being at 4th division I guess the question will be who is the real AIK

vakho - there is no other team called just "AIK".

Sandvikens AIK, Skellefteå AIK, Kalmar AIK, Visby AIK, Älvsjö AIK all use AIK as a suffix. Although they refer to themselves as just AIK, the media will talk of "the game between AIK and Skellefteå AIK", or, more often, "the game bewteen AIK and Skellefteå".

We say in Spain "Real Madrid" or simply (and more frecuently) "el Madrid", but never Real.

Of course "Andresco" is correct and AIK was in fact started in the very centre of Stockholm late 19th century. But it should be added that AIK has their club office and homeground (Råsunda Stadion) in the city of Solna.

Just to complement Ferdyduke's comment.

In Spain we say la Real (in feminine) refering to Real Sociedad de San Sebastian, and not Real Madrid.

isidromv - how about Real Zaragoza, Real Mallorca and Real Betis? And Deportivo Alavés, since "Deportivo" usually refers to the Galician club?
