| There seems to be an implicit assumption that the winners of the UEFA Cup will come from the CLGS third placers or possibly UEFA GS winners. While this eventually happened last season the results in the knock-out sounds had many surprises. The last 16 comprised: 4 UC group winners, 5 UC group seconds, 4 UC group thirds, and 3 CLGS thirds. Neither UEFA Groups A nor G had any club in the last 16, whereas Group E had all 3 qualifiers through. Only 1 of the 4 UC group third placers in the last 16 failed to reach the last 8 (and they lost to the eventual cup winners). Only 1 of the 3 UC group third placers in the last 8 failed to reach the last 4 (and they lost to another third placer). The only finalist from the UEFA group stage was a third placer. So third gives no less chance than first or second of further progress (but a lot better than fourth or fifth!). |
