Scottish teams in CL next season

There seems to be some confusion reigning over this. Various posters have through links to their own workings, have this seasons Scottish champions automatically in the CL Group stage next season.

This isn't the case surely? As ranked 10th, then isn't it the case that Scottish runners up enter at the QR2 and the winners at QR3?

Also regards this, Scotland are ranked 10th and Belgium 9th but both on the same co-efficients. It does seem very unfair given that in 2001/02, Rangers only played one game vs Anzhi from Dagestan - that game taking place in Warsaw. If there were the normal two legs, then rangers would surely have picked up a win or draw which would have resulted in Scotland being 9th and ahead of Blegium.

yes the winners of the Scottish league enter at QR3 and the runners-up at QR2. The Third place team will enter UEFA Cup first round and the other UEFA Cup representative from the fa cup will enter UEFA Cup QR2.

The runner-up in SPL will start in CLQR2. The champion in SPL will start in CLQ3 unless the reigning CL-champ is qualified for CL from its respective domestic league. Then the Scottish champs will be automatically qualified for CLGS.

Example: If Chelsea or Real Madrid win CL this season and end up among the two best in their domestic league, Scottish champs (Hearts..) will go directly into CLGS, because England and Spain have two automatic places in CLGS next season for no. 1 and 2 in domestic league.

anita is right. In the majority of cases the CL cup holder qualifies directly for the next season CL. But I prefer to follow the UEFA policy and reserve an extra place for the cup holder in the CL group stage. Something like "it's better to have a present (for Scotland) at the end of the season then have to take away something". But when you try to make predictions (like Ricardo and Forza do) it's more logical not to use the cup-holder spot.

But all this may be changed next season after UEFA's promise to change the rules in order to guarantee an extra cup-holder spot (Liverpool's case). I'm really curious if the new rule will only apply to the top-3 countries, or that the cup-holder spot will always be an extra spot (my preference).

I have seen a few threads on this subject and they all seem to agree with Anita and bert's answers above. However listened to last nights BBC Scotland's 90 minute program whose "expert" (apparently after speaking to UEFA), confirmed that Scotlands entries for next season will be the same as this years. This information will be confirmed in a meeting this December.

I assume the BBC are just not as clued up as some of this sites contributers.

Expect more from the BBC.

The Scottish media have proved time and time again they have no idea how the system work.

Not just the Scottish media - English media as well - most of the papers insisted Everton would be seeded in QR3 in 2005-6. Not to mention even UEFA sometimes don't understand their own system.

And also some people here apparently - Scotland are not 11th (????)

For 2006-7 the relevant ranking is 2000-05 where Scotland are 10th -
and for 2007-8 it's 2001-06 where Scotland are currently
in 9th place, although Belgium and Russia look likely to overtake.
But not necessarily!

Even for 2002-7 Scotland are 10th - it's only when we get to 2003-8 that the Scots drop to 12th.

Looking at the teams still in Scotland still have a chance of staying above Belgium.

Anderlecht look like the whipping boys of their group, and it's between Brugge & Rapid Vienna for bottom of their group.

So - althought it sticks in my craw as a Celtic supporter - I've got to want Rapid to finish above Brugge.

I still think Rangers should manage 3rd in thier group.

My own predictions are based on coefficients so still have Anderlecht and Bruges to reach the UC and have a good run, enabling Belgium as well as Russia to overtake Scotland. The fact that Belgium as well as Scotland have no teams in the UC group stage could be important.

However on current form that's by no means certain. It could easily finish Russia-Scotland-Belgium.

I am hopeful about the prospect of only CSKA Moscow qualifying from the groups just drawn.

In that case you could say that Zenit and Loko will only contribute another 3 - 6 team points.

I would be hopefult hat Rangers can at least match them, then it's up to CSKA to pile on the points.

I have no doubts that we will hold off Belgium.

does this not prove for countrys around the 8th place and above mark ,that the uefa cup is actually much more important than the c/l as already pointed out anderlecht and brugge dont look tooclever points wise whilst rangers are just too unpredictable just know , if only celtic had met artmedia a few weeks later.
