I didn't realise they give out the league title in September but seriously good luck for this season...

Just think, there are 30 games to go, 4 quarters of 7/8 games if you like.

In each of those quarters Rangers only need to catch 3 points to win the league.

Not as difficult as it seems is it.

Though I wish Hearts the best of luck - this forum isn't really
meant for fans to say their team is the best in Scotland/Europe/The World. Though sometimes it's used that way.

From the point of view of this forum the interesting thing is how many points Hearts now need to make sure of 3rd place and a UEFA spot - in fact, could they be the 1st "winter league" team to make
sure of a European place, given the gap between the Old Firm and the rest in Scotland?

In 2001 (1st time with 38 matches), the 3rd place
team has obtained

2001 - 66
2002 - 58
2003 - 63
2004 - 68
2005 - 61

So Hearts' target is somewhere between 58 and 68 points, with an average of 63. So with 24 points already, they need about 39 points
from the remaining 30 games - so a win 10 drawn 9 lost 11 record would be good enough. Should be easy enough to achieve.

Of course, the UEFA cup place wouldn't necessarily be sure if the 63 points was achieved with a few matches left, but it's an indication of what Hearts need to do.

If they keep on winning, they should make the 63 point target with
their 21st game, in January.

On the same basis, the average of 2nd places is 87 points - Hearts need 63 more points to reach this target, or 21 wins out of 30 games,
or, say, win 18 draw 9 lose 3. When you look at it this way you see how difficult it will be for Hearts even to make 2nd place. If they lose more than 1 game in each "quarter season" they are unlikely to do it, unless one or both of the "Old Firm" have a dreadful season.

Since they have another 6 Old Firm matches, they probably need to get a 50% record (won 2 draw 2 lose 2) against Celtic and Rangers and
lose no more than one or two games to other teams. VERY difficult.

agreed exile, the only way they can do it is to take it to the old firm in the head to heads.

if they can win all 4 (they have 1/1 so far) at Tynecastle then maybe 2nd at least.

Personally speaking I believe Rangers will win the league with Hearts second.

Not one piece of football I have seen from Celtic this season makes me think they are of any quality.

At the risk of turning this thread into another domestic Scottish dispute - though Celtic have been very poor, were dumped out of Europe by a less than World Class team, and were easily beaten by Rangers, they are now 6 points ahead of Rangers, by picking up the points in games where they have played badly. I would think Hearts would now be more worried about the green half of the old firm.

The bookmakers seem to agree:-

Celtic evens
Hearts 7 to 4
Rangers 3 to 1

In 1957-8 and 1959-60 Hearts got 4 wins out of 4 against the Old Firm,
which again illustrates the sort of results Hearts need.

Most bookmakers have Celtic favourites to win the league, Hearts second favourites, Rangers third.
One bookmaker has Hearts as favourites.

On the basis of this discussion, I wouldn't advise placing a bet with that particular bookie!

Thought it was interesting that the bookies expect (at the moment) Rangers won't make the Champion's League qualifiers next season.
Maybe Rangers can qualify by winning the tournament this time (they've had more attempts than anyone else).
0-0 HT with Inter, doing better than most expected.

Hearts losing 2-1 at Falkirk with 15 minutes to go - Has the bubble burst.
Remember Hearts haven't played anyone decent before today !

2-2 final score.
Away to Celtic next, without Gordon (Hearts/Scotland keeper sent off) + a few injury problems.
Meanwhile Celtic appear to be getting better. 5-0 win away from home against a side who recently beat Hearts.

i posted weeks ago that a favourite bet amongst rangers fans was celtic not to reach 89 points , how stupid do i feel know at this rate no team will pull away which can only be good for the league , celtic have once again been handed a favourable slice of luck with bednar , gordon and brellier all missing for hearts but this will hopefully help rangers as a draw or celtic victory being the best result . hopefully this is our league starting to climb out of the wilderness as really only dunfermline and livingston are rank rotten , the rest seem able to have a go, plus the old firm are no where near the standard of a few years ago, when even then admittedly they still were rotten in europe

I'd expected Celtic to do not alot this season, thought rangers would walk the league.
Celtic are getting better, our polish players have settled, our youngsters are improving - McManus, Maloney & rangers reject Beattie, the midfield are all scoring goals, injured players are returning - Sutton & Agathe, 6 points ahead of Rangers with 2 of the 3 derby games left at home, the bookies have made us favorites & we're only 90 minutes from top of the league.
I hope hearts continue to have a good season & our 'luck' improves even more.
As for rangers, I've no idea why they've been so poor this season, maybe form, maybe manager,....?

jarv i wasn't having a dig , but as you will no doubt be more than aware the minute your team goes through a sticky patch every other team seems to get lucky breaks , that was what i meant , far be it from me to point out some home truths but fot both the old firm their is far too many bosmans and short term signings and even more worrying for celtic , their big players sutton agathe thomson lennonare in their last season i realise some wont be missed but you cannot keep replacing them with guys who will sell shirts. with regards to us whilst our league form has been at best poor the double edged sword is that our european coefficient needs boosted or else we fall way down the rankings so i would gladly swop a half decent run in europe with just being in league contention after xmas for as you know we always KEEP BELIEVING
