Everything is possible today . I rank Anorthosis Famagusta as a bottom Italian Seria A team !!! I mean they are of a very good level !!! |

| I would love to see Rangers play Famagusta.
To be frank a team with Ketsbaia and Kinkladze doesn't scare me as much as Yattara and Tekke.
That's not to say they are no good, at the moment Famagusta are an average team playing to a good level, Trabzon have high class players playing beneath their standard. |

| from the Cyprus Mail:
Tense scenes at airport for local team By Elias Hazou
Tit-for-tat security checks greet Cypriot contingent
IF THE security checks at the airport weren’t gruelling enough, FC Anorthosis of Famagusta got their first real taste of Turkish hospitality at Trabzonspor yesterday, with scenes last night of 500 protesters gathered menacingly outside their hotel.
Media reports said the hundreds of protesters included a number of Grey Wolves, an extreme nationalist group. The amassed crowd threatened to cut off the footballers’ heads and shouted ‘You will die’ and ‘Cyprus is Turkish’.
According to reports, the local authorities did very little to dissuade the crowd.
Today Anorthosis face the Trabzonspor in the return leg of an historic Champions League qualifier.
Club officials, players and some 100 fans were subjected to close body searches – Turkish authorities cited security reasons – and all baggage was opened up and sifted through. Euro MP Yiannakis Matsis, travelling to the Turkish city to watch the game, was even asked to take off his shoes and socks, as the scenes unfolded before media crews from a number of countries. Cypriot journalists spoke of hostile and humiliating treatment.
Last night Matsis expressed his concern for the safety of the Cypriot contingent, saying he worried about extreme displays of fanaticism at the match.
“That’s how I see this developing,” he said, speaking from the hotel.
The Anorthosis team and supporters arrived at the airport shortly after 3am yesterday after an exhausting trip. They had departed from Larnaca airport, transferred to a Syrian airlines charter and then flown to Trabzonspor.
The club had refused an offer to fly direct from Ercan airport in the occupied north, and the Turkish government still prohibits Cypriot planes from approaching or landing Turkish territory. There was a heavy police presence both inside and outside the airport, where a few dozen Trabzonspor supporters had gathered to heckle the Cypriot team.
Last Tuesday the GSP stadium in Nicosia was turned into a fortress, as Cypriot police enforced draconian security measures. Despite fears of a flare-up, with potentially disastrous political consequences, everything went smoothly and no incidents were reported.
A spokesman for Trabzonspor said yesterday that the club would reciprocate Anorthosis’ hospitality. UEFA is keeping close tabs on the high-risk fixture, and some 1,000 Turkish police will be deployed at the venue.
The fixture has been billed as the ultimate grudge match, pitting Anorthosis, a refugee side now in exile in Larnaca since 1974, against a Turkish team. Emotions were certainly running high at the first leg in Nicosia last week, but Anorthosis’ 3-1 win has raised the stakes even higher.
The appeal of the game leaves little doubt that Trabzonspor’s venue, the Avni Aker stadium, will be packed to capacity (21,000 plus). Visitors Anorthosis are bracing for a hellish night there and the players will need to keep their cool and their minds on the game amid a charged and intimidating atmosphere.
A spokesman for the club said yesterday Anorthosis’ players were prepared to take the heat and that their only concern was progression to the next round of the Champions League qualifiers.
Still, there was no brushing aside the tension building up, as football fanaticism inevitably mixed with politics. Reports said that Turkish Minister of Public Works Faruk Ozak yesterday visited Trabzonspor’s training ground in a show of support. And there were reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat would be in the stands on match day.
Meanwhile the press in Turkey and the breakaway regime did their part in turning up the heat. A paid ad reprinted in nationalist Volkan urged Trabzonspor to throw Anorthosis’ players into the sea. It read:
“Forward lads! Those who threw the Greeks into the Aegean in 1922, those who in 1974 hurled back the Greek Cypriots to the south of the Mediterranean, let them by the same token punish the Greek Cypriots at the Avni Aker stadium. Let us squeeze them into the Black Sea. Allah be with us!”
The ad was signed by a group of businessmen, lawyers and academics.
Naturally the pressure was a two-edged sword, as the onus fell on the hosts to avenge the first-leg defeat. The club’s president Atay Aktug yesterday felt compelled to say that Trabzonspor’s failure to qualify should not be viewed as treason.
Back in Cyprus, quarters criticised the government for leaving Anorthosis out in the cold. DISY deputy Soteris Sampson said no representative of the government, even a low-rank official, would be escorting the Cypriot team.
“Anorthosis fought not just for itself but for the whole of Cyprus,” said Sampson, alluding to the first game in Nicosia.
“But now, for all the government’s praise, they have been left alone at the mercy of God… or should I say Allah.” |

| Can't wait to see Rangers v Famagusta, as a Rangers fan i couldn't have asked for a better draw. It won't be a walkover as other results have proved - all minor teams are improving.
If one more higher ranked team (than rangers) gets knocked out rangers go into pot 3! Hopefully Betis knockout Monaco.
Doe's anybody know if Liverpool still don't have their country protection in the the group stages? I would have thought a fairer way would be to take away their coeficient instead. |

Edited by: klos at: 03-08-2005, 22:06 | Thanks Bert, I didn't realise that holders had the top coeficient.
That isn't much of an disadvantage is it. It only hurts other teams like Slavia Prague who ended up unseeded in the 3rd Qualifying round. |

| Ithink that this score is very normal among whole 2th qualifying round results because Trabzonspor showed that they will never participate to the CL for alltimes by being eliminated Kyiv after a 2 goals triumph on the road last season. They have only one famous player(Tekke) who tries to make walk the team in europe but one star isn't enough to pass a round in the europe. Famagusta is more likely a team and passed the round inspite of seeming weaker than its opponent.. |

| To bjkman: Before all of your compatriots were saying for very easy matches against Anorthosis but after the humiliation by a Cypriot Refugee team, you don't have nothing else to say rather than Rangers will have easy matches.
After the drawing, all you were saying for two easy matches against Anorthosis and that it is equal with your 3rd division. Well all were proved just phrases and that you have all of you poor knowledge of football. No serious coach would be so sure for his team about an easy match (Guness) and no serious coach would have said Anorthosis is not able to score 1 goal.
As it was proved the level between our football is not so big. In my opinion only Besiktas, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce from Turkey are better than Anorthosis.
Now I am hearing from you the same story. Rangers will have no problem. Well as I know Trabzonspor is the runner up from Turkey. Then it means your football is much lower lever than yours.
Rangers is not doing so good the last years in Europe and Anorthosis has its own chances. In my opinion Trabzonspor is more difficult opponent than Rangers. Rangers was eliminated by teams like Zizkov and Fenerbahce(when they got 0 points in groups).
Just to keep in mind. Anorthosis and Rangers played against each other 10 years ago for Champions League Qualifying. Rangers won 1-0 aggregate score (1-0 in Ibrox and 0-0 in Cyprus). Anorthosis deserved to pass to groups that time since they played better in both matches(especially in Ibrox) and they lost many chances. Today Anorthosis is much better than they were 10 years ago. |

Congtats to Anorthosis for a great win. |

| The player sent off was Katsavakis a Greek defender. He is a good player but can be replaced by fellow Greek Xenides without problems in Anorthosis defence. However the big problem for Anorthosis will be the absence of German midfielder Marco Haber who was booked (yellow card) and this was his 2nd yellow card in the competition and he misses next match. Haber is a very experienced midfielder (more than 300 appearances in German bundesliga) and Anorthosis does not really have a substitute for him. Ketsbagia and Kiklatze will probaply start the game against Rangers (Kiklatze was on the bench on both games against Trabzonzpor) but none of them can replace Haber. |

| Oh, that's interesting. I didn't know that Marco Haber is now playing with Anorthosis. He was a really talented 18 year old when he became German Champion with Kaiserslautern in 1991. After that he never quite lived up to the high hopes despite 275 matches in german Bundesliga for Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart and Unterhaching. He even played twice in the german national team but the big breakthrough never happened. So it seems he finally found his place in Cyprus. I wish him good luck and now have another reason to hope that Anorthosis will eliminate Rangers. ![](include/smilies/s0.gif) |

| Cypriot clubs have always been OK. Look at the all time ranking list (for Eurocups). Omonia is 135th, APOEL 140th and Anortosis 206th. It is surprisingly good for such a small country. There are 800-900 clubs on the list (Fagueras). |

| Many people heavily criticise Rangers lack of success in Europe, yes we have not been above average for years...however.
The Zizkov match will live with me forever, we could have won that home game 10-0, but we failed to deliver, the positive thing was that the players knew they had failed and went on to win the league.
Fenerbahce? - Having demolished Maribor (CL 2 years before) in QL2, we came up against what I think was a very good side with Revivo and Serhat. I accept they got 0 points in group.
Excuses! Excuses!
At the moment I am very confident in what the Rangers side has to offer, they have a "spine" with the Goalkeeper (Klos / Waterreus) Fanfan at the back, Ferguson in the middle, Buffel playing just off Prso.
As long as these people deliver, those around them will respond.
Outwith those players, Ricksen, Ball and Lovenkrands are all players of international repute, Ricksen exccelent last season, Lovenkrands excellent this season.
I look forward to Tuesday, as do the Rangers fans who will enjoy the beautiful scenery and turn the trip into a summer holiday. |

I feel really happy when i see what you think about Anorthosis Famagusta! Trabzonspor is a far better team than Rangers with very good players! Also remember that Trabzosnpor were the runner us of the Turkish league which is much better than the Scottish who has a very low level! Anorthosis also had to face that team with the worst circumstances in Turkey and made it to qualify! Have you also seen the first match ..I think that you didn't! I won't say that Rangers isn't a better team than Anorthosis but i think that this year is our turn to qualify for the groups! Our players and fans feel great now and won't let the chance! Seniol Giunes also told that we don't have any chances with them! It's Rangers' turn now.. |

| If Scotland has a low level, why does it have a higher ranking on this site than Turkey.
That record dates back the last 5 years, i.e we are consistently better than turkey.
Just because the 2nd best team in Scotland made themselves look silly do not presume the 1st team in Scotland will be the same. |

| nelster: I am not an Anorthosis fan. I know who Rangers are as I am interested in English and Scotish football and watch games from tv every week. As I said in another topic Rangers is the favourite to qualify as long as they dont underestimate. Anorthosis has a budget of 1.5 million euros and Trabzonspor a budget of 35 million euro but Anorthosis moved on because money do not play football, the players do. I hope you have a nice time in Cyprus. By the way the game will be held in Nicosia , GSP stadium, as the home of Anorthosis in Larnaka (Antonis Papadopoulos stadium where Rangers played in 1995) does not meet the criteria of UEFA for champions league or UEFA Cup games. |

| It will not seem as a good excuse but Anorthosis eliminated Trabzon not because they are better. If look from the point of football, we can see Trabzon is much more better than Anorthosis. They have just 2-3 experienced players and 1-2 passionate players(Haxhi the best performance of the games). The reason for this situation is first underestimating the opponent. Also Turkish media made some kind of absurd things such as saying "This is a national issue. Trabzon must beat Anorthosis" which stressed our young players. In the professional side of the games I can say Trabzon is not ready for the season. Tolga left very late so Eller came late he signed and a week later he was in starting 11. Tomas Jun was ineligible for the games. Fatih Tekke trained with team 1-2 days before the game, after an operation. Huseyin, the best Turkish defensive midfielder injured in training camp was not ready for a hard game. Also Yattara was very stressed due to his low salary. In frindlies he missed 3 consecutive penalties and each game has a yellow, taken out very early. These problems are not related to the power of Trabzonspor. I still defend Trabzonspor. We are the second team in Turkey(I can't deny Fenerbahçe). If we were ready everything will be different. Anorthosis can beat Rangers or not I'm not interested in but I hope this victory will raise Cyprus football up and they will start playing positive and creative football. I wanna see them make 3 consecutive passes. Football is a very good sport. Professionalism does not enjoy us, we want creativity. I hope you understand me! Congratulations. |

Edited by: apw at: 05-08-2005, 15:44 | Q. Was this result because of a decline in the Standard of Turkish football or because of a rise in The Cypriot Level or did the Turkish Media exert too much pressure and place unrealistic demands of a National level on Trabzon. Also surely at a time when Turkey enters eu assecion talks is not good to have the Turkish Media making alleged statements which can be detrimental to The nations political future especially over such a sensitive matter concerning an eu state |

| good luck igrima.
I am a little bit less confident after our performance on Saturday.
It was pretty poor, but that is maybe a bit harsh on a very impressive Inverness side.
We have not conceded a goal in our last 4 friendlies and our first 2 league games, however on Saturday we were very close to losing many with our goalkeeper Waterreus outstanding.
If you can get Ketsbaia and Kinkladze feeding someone with great pace down the middle against Andrews you may get some joy.
I think our manager may bring in Rodriguez and go with a back 3 to try and not lose the game. I would rather he didn't as I believe we could finish the tie all being well tomorrow. |
