with greece currently in 8th place and scotland and belgium just below what are the likely positions for next years c/league given that greece are going to drop more points from a few seasons ago and does 8th place mean more teams in european competitions ?

The number of teams in the CL 06/07 are now already known. They are determined by the country ranking 2005, so the results of next season don't matter for that.
The country ranking after next season will determine the number of teams in the CL 07/08.

So in the CL 06/07 Greece will have 2 teams (1 in R1 and 1 in QR3) as has Belgium (but they only have 2 teams in UEFA-cup while Greece has 4).
Scotland will have 2 teams in CL (1 in QR3 (or R1 if the titleholder qualifies for R1) and 1 in QR2).

Or, as you said "given that greece are going to drop more points ", do you mean season 2008/09?

The 11 points of Greece for 01/02 don't count anymore for the 2007 country ranking (2002-2007), so for the spots in CL and UEFA-cup for the 2008/09 season.

As you can see in the 2007 ranking so far (http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method3/crank2007.html) Greece is only 11th in that ranking. Scotland and Russia are equal 8th at the moment, so there is a good chance one of these (or Belgium) will take Greece's place and will have 6 teams in Europe in 2008/09. But off course still 2 seasons of European football have to be played before that ranking is final, so 2 good Greek season can still keep them in 8th place.

richboy,
tiebreaker ist most recent season (04/05), so Belgium 9th (6.125), Scotland 10th (4.750).
