big problems are caused by athens, moskva and london in athen i actually count at least 5 (panathinaikos, aek, olympiakos [i know they are not really playing in athen, but i do count piräus as suburb of athen>, egaleo & panionios), are there others?
in moskva it's spartak, lok, cska, dinamo, torpedo,...
in london it's arsenal, chelsea, fulham, tottenham,...
please could someone give me the full lists of those cities (just first league teams please)

In Greece, there is also Iraklis and PAOK from Thessaloniki. |

| London: Additionally Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic.
Spain is not so easy: Getafe is a suburb of Madrid. Up to you if you count them with Real and Atletico. Levante and Villareal at least play in Valencia. I don't know if they are located in Valencia, too. Look at their websites. |

| Interesting that Europe's largest cities - Moscow, Paris, London, Istanbul - have yet to provide a European Champion club - or even a finalist. Also largest city in Italy (Rome) - still no champion (though AS Roma came close in 1984) - and largest city in Germany (Berlin) - no champion or finalist. |

In Ireland we have 6 teams from the 12 in the Premier Division in Dublin.
Shelbourne Bohemians Saint Patricks Athletic Shamrock Rovers University College Dublin Bray Wanderers (on the Dublin border)
We also had another Dublin team called Dublin City who were relegated only last season so it could have been 7 ! |

| Munich has three teams - Bayern, 1860, and Unterhaching.
Nuremburg has another team called Greuther Fürth who are presently challanging for promtion in the second division. Furth is officially a different city but is really now a big suburb of Nuremburg.
The season before last madrid had three teams in the top division Real, Atlético and Rayo Vallecano (they are currently in the third division but occupy a promotion position at the moment).
Barcelona as well had three teams in the top division in the 80's whose name I cant remember and there is also a third team from Valencia whose name I cant remember either (they were in the top division in spain until quite recently).
Four of the ten top division teams in Estonia are from Tallinn. (Levadia,TVMK,Flora,Dünamo) |

Madrid: Real and Atletico. Getafe is a suburb of Madrid. Rayo Vallecano used to be in first division but now in 3rd level.
Barcelona: FC Barcelona and Espanyol. Sabadell (a suburb of Barcelona) played in the 80's in first division, currently in 3rd level.
Seville: Sevilla and Betis.
Valencia: Valencia and Levante (no other team from Valencia have ever played in 1st division, see RSSF). Villarreal is a small city 60 km from Valencia, even not in the same province. |

| The Swedish season starts in a couple of weeks. The three big cities:
* Stockholm: AIK (although from Greater Stockholm and temporarily in 2nd level), Djurgården and Hammarby.
* Göteborg: IFK Göteborg, Örgryte and BK Häcken. (Västra Frölunda and GAIS currently in 2nd level).
* Malmö: Malmö FF. (The next team, IFK Malmö, are in 3rd level).
To me, it's kind of funny how a team can bear the name of the city it comes from. "Everton FC" sounds much more natural than "Liverpool FC", and it would be even better if a team chose a symbol to represent the team. (these symbols are often nicknames today, "The Magpies", "The Red Devils", but not always: "Arsenal", "Aston Villa").
In Italy, in the bigger cities with two teams, there's often one carrying the city name, traditionally being popular with the working class, and another team with a more original name, often being supported by the upper classes (in the beginning of course, these differences have somewhat vanished). The funny thing though is that all four of these teams carrying the city name play in some kind of red!
Milano: Milan (city name, red), Inter (blue) Roma: Roma (city name, red), Lazio (blue) Genova: Genoa (city name, dark red), Sampdoria (blue) Torino: Torino (city name, dark red), Juventus (white/black) |

| In the Netherlands there are no city's with more than 1 team in the highest division at the moment.
Only 2 city's have more than 1 professional team (highest 2 divisions):
Rotterdam: Feyenoord, Sparta (2nd div.) and Excelsior (2nd div.) Eindhoven: PSV and FC Eindhoven (2nd div.) |

Edited by: neill at: 21-03-2005, 17:17 | There are only two Glasgow teams in the Scottish Premier League, Rangers and Celtic. Partick Thistle were relegated from the Premier League last season and Queens Park play in the 3rd division (the fourth level). Clyde used to play in Glasgow but now play in an industrial estate a few miles outside Glasgow!
There are two Dundee teams (Dundee and Dundee United) and two Edinburgh teams (Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian) in the premier league. Scotland has 42 senior professional teams yet Falkirk is the only other town in Scotland that has more than one professional club (I think!). |

| thx for all the replies, never thought that there are som many clubs from dublin in irish league, maybe we get to see in uc-groups soon as they are in an uprising after the change to summer league
and about greece: is halkidona, ionikos & kallithea really from athens? that would make 50% of all teams coming from one city record for a top ten country |

It will be Cork City in the UC group stage this season from Ireland (Im not joking). I think they are better than the Shelbourne side who did so well last year.

| East Stirlingshire are the "other" Falkirk club.
In Rugby League, teams have adopted animal names such as (Keighley)Cougars, (Bradford)Bulls and (Leeds)Rhinos - whilst in Rugby Union we have the (London)Wasps, Saracens, Harlequins which are old names and also some new animal names as well - Ospreys, Sharks and Dragons. Trouble is commentators and pundits then never mention the town they are from! Sometimes it's difficult to see the connection - how many Rhinos are there in Leeds - it doesn't even have a zoo! |

Celtic Rangers Partick Thistle Clyde (maybe from Cumbernauld now but still a Glasgow club) Queens Park (oldest club in Britain) (getting pedantic now) Third Lanark (deceased) Clydebank (deceased) Pollok FC Arthurlie Cambuslang Rangers Glasgow University FC Maryhill (there are hundreds more juniors i wont add)
But suffice to say that at one point or another the following teams have been considered Glaswegian enough to be in the Glasgow Cup - Hamilton, Motherwell, St Mirren, Albion Rovers, Airdrieonians United and (bizzarely) Kilmarnock. No I dont get half of that either. And we cant forget Johnstone Burgh either....hell I could be on all day.
Btw, if we counr Getafe as Madrid, then we should count Livingston as Edinburgh! |

| Some more remarks to Germany:
I unterstood Lunaris as looking for the current first division clubs.
If not, then Munich is right with 3 clubs though 1860 and Unterhaching (which is actually a suburb, but can be count to Munich) play currently in the 2nd division (1860 fighting for promotion, Unterhaching against relegation).
In the history of German Bundesliga, Berlin had 4 (Hertha, Blau-Weiß 90, Tasmania and Tennis Borussia), but max. 2 at the same time. The record holder here is - as always - Munich with the 3 clubs mentioned (1999-2001).
Furthermore, Cologne had 2 clubs at the same time (1. FC and Fortuna) as well as Hamburg (HSV and St. Pauli) and Stuttgart (VfB and Kickers). But in all cases, the second club was in the Bundesliga only for one or a few seasons.
eoinh, Fürth is definitely no suburb of Nuremberg. True, the cities are neighboured, but Fürth has more than 100.000 inhabitants. A good friend of mine now living near Munich comes from Fürth. If you tell him that his home town is a suburb of Nuremberg, you surely would have to expect severe consequences. |

Clubs that will probably get promoted from the 2nd division: Akratitos, Levadiakos, Larissa, Kalamata, Niki Volou. Akratitos is from Athens, all other are from small cities outside Athens-Thessaloniki. |
