18 years without lose a match in La Romareda in european competitions. With 20 matchs in that 18 years.

Ajax was the last team to win there in the year 1987, the of Gullit, Van Basten, etc...

What team can beat them at home?

Who can beat Zaragoza in the Romareda? Well, Bilbao can and has to be the favorite to do so on current overall form, but . . . something happens to Zaragoza in big KO home-and-home competitions. They took the Copa del Rey last year, carrying KO success on into a final in which they were huge underdogs. Compare their road record in La Liga (one win, five ties, seven losses; 10 goals scored and 22 given up) to their road record in the UEFA Cup this year (two wins, one tie, one loss; five goals scored and four given up) and you see a team transformed in the European competition. At home in the UEFA Cup, they are 4-0-0, with seven scored and two given up. Anyway, I hope Bilbao can beat Austria Viena on Sunday so this great matchup between two in-form teams can take place.

And now it doesn't really matter whether Bilbao is better than Zaragoza because they weren't better than Austria Vienna. Now the question is whether Austria can pull another surprise against a Spanish side or if they have had their time in the limelight.

Conclusion?
Never think about your next opponent, if you don't know him yet.

As it turned out, it wasn't necessary to win at Romareda to eliminate Zaragoza. A 2-2 draw was enough for Austria to beat them on away goals. Amazing performance by Austria (club and country), but to Spain it only added insult to injury. Terrible year for them with only Villarreal left and they're not even in the quarters yet after their delayed game against Steaua.

Michele, Michele, Austria Wiens success is not amazing at all. Don't you know that their top scorer is Norwegian? I sometimes wish that all things could be so easily explainable.

Sigurd Rushfeldt, the striker all of the world should fear. There's just one thing I don't understand. FCK also has a Norwegian who is almost top scorer (Magne Hoseth). How come we're not top of the world? I think we should be, but instead we're only number 4 in Denmark.

At FC Groningen we are very happy with Erik Nevland - 8 goals in 11 matches. 4th place not in sight though.

anita,
maybe you should ask in Dortmund for a certain "import" from Rosenborg. They are not happy with him. Not at all.

Michele, weren't you who told us that Hoseth didn't take part in this years' UEFA cup for some reason or other? Maybe if he had FCK would be waiting for the draw tomorrow to know who they'd be playing against in the quarter finals...

Congratulations to Austria,

that's all about Real Zaragoza's dream of beeing UEFA-CUP winner.

@veilchen your statement was true about beating the overestimated spanish teams.

You're right viulo. Hoseth didn't play European football this season. The FCK board couldn't make the decision to buy him (and Swedish international Tobias Linderoth) before the deadline for CLQR2 had passed. But that wasn't really a problem since we only had to beat Gorica before they would be eligible for the 3rd round against Monaco. A 2-1 win away indicated that the gambling was ok, but 0-5 at home wasn't really a part of the calculation. And there's little doubt that we would have done better with these two in the squad, but what I don't understand is that we are only 4th in the league trailing 14 points. So apparently you can't solve all your problems by signing a Norwegian. (sorry anita, hope I didn't devastate you too much with this statement).

On the other hand, Benfica's hasn't won the portuguese championship since 1994, bought Karadas this year and are 3 points clear in first place... Although you can hardly say that it has to do with his brilliant performances...

No, viulo, Karadas has his limitations, and remember that he was only a substitute in Rosenborg (though normally in the 14-men-squad). But seems he is doing fine in Benfica.

A peculiarity (since it was mentioned), some years ago Benfica wanted to buy Rushfeldt from Rosenborg, the NOR striker now in Austria Wien. The deal was almost settled, but Benfica could not give any bank guarantee for the transfer sum so he went to Santander instead(it was appealed by Benfica to UEFA, but they lost). He went on loan back to Rosenborg for a while, and then Austria Wien bought him.

And Michele, there are often problems/frustrations for good players to perform at their best when playing for a lousy team.

And ralfinho, Dortmund is of course not at all happy about their NOR defender. He is one of the best paid players in a club with SERIOUS 'cash-flow' problems. Btw, he is a regular in the NOR national team. But between us, I don't evaluate him so high, either
