| Is AZ Alkmaar the surprise of the UEFA-Cup (together with Dnjepr)??? There are playing very well in the Dutch league and are surprisingly qualified for the next round after beating Auxerre, Wronki and Glasgow Rangers. I saw them yesterday and for me they are this years surprise.
Alltogether I think the Dutch clubs except Utrecht are performing very well. Also Heerenveen has a lot of chances to go to the next round. That should mean 4 Dutch teams in the next round!! Together with PSV in the 2nd round of the CL.. The Netherlands are going to win the battle fot the 6th place in the ranking.... |

| I watched the match myself. Impressing season for AZ. But Holland have to wait at least a couple of years before they will be able the 6th place back again. Portugal is way ahead. |

| I'm sorry. I meant to say that they will win the battle against Greece. |

| The results are impressive. Lost only once, in August at PSV Eindhoven when they underestimated PSV.
5 games in UEFA Cup, 5 wins. But they are not even showing their best football and form at the moment. But who am I to complain with all the wins after years of 1st division and fighting against degradation. 2 years ago I was at FC Zwolle (number last) against AZ and we were 5-0 down at halftime
Last night they deserved the win although Rangers probably should've had a penalty. It was a quite good game but by far not the best from AZ-side I've seen. The game against AUxerre (at that time nr. 3 in France) was brilliant. Auxerre didn't have a chance and the 2-0 should have been 4 or 5-0. |

| I remember some years ago, when Alkmaar was not known in Europe, friends of mine who are into betting always played Alkmaar to win in its home matches (in the Dutch championship). I guess they must have earned quite some money, so they had also named their football team (competing in a 6x6 tournament) Alkmaar. That was at least 4-5 years ago, so I guess the results of AZ in Europe this year is not a surprise for them!!! |

| Joost, I love that arrogance. Lost once to PSV, because they underestimated PSV!! I remember my team Rosenborg lost once against Real Madrid in CL group stage (97-98). We were just underestimating them.... We won the home match. |

| Don't forget the history of AZ (before 1986 it was AZ'67) in Europe. In the season of 1980-1981 they have played the UEFA-Cup Final against Ipswich (0-3 and 4-2) after they won the Dutch competition. So they shouldn't be unknown in Europe alltough it is a long time ago. |

| AZ is not unknown in Europe. Dutch league is very respected and often reported on TV in Serbia after League rounds (30-45 minute highlights) especially after some Serbian players went to play in Holland interest has increased. And in the beginning of 80s AZ was known in Yugoslavia because it eliminated one of our teams. One of our TV stations used to show one of the league matches live. It went on for a couple of seasons. Though these season no Dutch league on TV I am afraid. I wonder if one of the reasons is that Kezman left. |

| I don't think Alkmaars performance is a surprise. You just have to look in the standings in Dutch league. 11 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss, as I remember - quite impressive. |

| I see AZ won tonight and I think they are top of the Dutch league.
I wonder will they go onto win it. That would be a surprise.
On another note were AZ involved in some kind of doping scandel back in the 70's? I might be totally mistaken about that. |

| It's a surprise thusfar. Hopefully they can continue this allthough I'm a PSV-fan.
But a doping scandal in the 70's at AZ Alkmaar?? Never heard about that. I can't imagine this is true. |

| I also never heard about doping. You must be mistaken with some other club. |
