I'm portuguese and I saw the game. This is what happens when you understimate your opponent too much. Last 4 results of Liechtenstein - Portugal were 0-8,0-5,0-7,0-8, so everyone thought, there it goes another bunch of goals and a training game.

And Portugal started playing very slow pace and no motivation. Even tough we scored 2 goals. On second half, the team was completely asleep. The first liechtenstein goal was an offer, Ricardo carvalho just stood there waiting while the other opponent passed and scored. And the second goal was a huge failure of Keeper ricardo on a free kick. Even after that Portugal, never seemed to wake up, believing that eventually we would score a 3rd goal easily. But then Lieshtenstein put all man defending and it was impossible to score again.

The bright side is that this result will not affect Portugal. We gave a very joy time to lieschtenstein, and now we will home win Russia on Wednesday in a "serious" game, and will climb up to first place of group.

As I can recall It is not the first time Portugal does this kind of "presents" to lower teams...I remember a draw against Azerbaijan in 99 when we got direct entrance in Euro2000. I guess we're the kind of squad that only play well against great teams!!

Norway lead one -nil against Belarus, Defended, and put defence playres out on turf.1-1

Norway lead 1-0 against Scotland, put in another striker, and we f... them off. Way to go.

Scotland is peculiarly lousy, or is it just me?

Liechtenstein was not the only surprise.
A smaller surprise was the game Cyprus vs Faroe Islands which finished 2-2. Faroe Islands were 2-1 up in half time and were equalised on 82' minute. Not that Cyprus is a superpower but at least at home is a respectable opponent (EURO 2004 it draw at home with Slovenia and Israel, won against Malta home and away and narrowly missed from France 1-2 in Cyprus).

Quite agree with galatasaray, but as for me and all Russians it's a nice surprise.Though that doesn't mean anything for our team(Russia) cause in Portugal with us it will be quite different team.

I think this result is the best for Slovaks.

This team didn?t play well in the last qualifications but now its very powerful i think. I saw their match in Russia they were much better and sholud have won.

A little mistake Slovaks games have been over for this year. Good attack (Mintál and Vittek-Norimberk) pretty strong defence...

But Portuguese are still the favourites but there are too many mytches to the end..

Scotland are horrible, and very very painful to watch. We have no worse players than you have, but the organisation is mostly way off, and we can not string two decent results together.

As much as I like Bertie, I have to say I think we need a new coach now before we go out of the running all together.

Maybe symptomathic for the closer margins in international football that no teams in WCQ have full pot. After just two-three matches. Though, I think Portugal had calculated with a three-pointer on Saturday

About Scotland, (British) experts have said for months (years) that this Scottish 'vintage' is the worst ever. And I have to agree. They always play with their hearts and work hard, but now they have a surprising lack of individual skills. I think even the Norwegian players were surprised/bewildered. Can some explanation be the dominance of foreign players in (especially) Old Firm? Dickov was the only player I saw that had something going (should have had a handful of red cards, though).

Sacking the coach is rarely THE solution, but maybe in Scotlands situation. Just hire a Scotsman and start all over again?

Yes, I thought the ball was in at the first glance, but the re-runs showed it wasn't, so the linesman was right. And I think it's just idiotic (and typical bad loser) of Bertie to argue otherwise and blame some of the defeat on that situation. With such a lousy team he should have other things on his mind than blaming the referees. And I mean absolutely no offense to Scotland. Hopefully they will 'rise and shine' again, but may take some years.

Note also Slovenia beat Italy, so the Italians can't count on an easy qualification either.

Scotland have produced few class players over the last 20 years. Roxburgh and Brown were able to grind out decent results through well-organised defending, but Vogts doesn't seem to be able to do the same.

If Vogts goes, Bonhof (the U21 coach) might be worth a try.

The 100% obvious choice is Ferguson. He must now be thinking about retiring from the Old Trafford job, considering the disappointing outcome of last season and the poor start to this one. WOuld he take on the Scottish job as a swansong to his career?

Failing him - Strachan - but then HE would probably prefer a top club job should it become available.

The fundamental problem is lack of talent, though. In the 1960s Scotland could field

Law, Baxter, Gemmell, Mackay, Johnstone, McNeill, Greig, Bremner, Lorimer, Eddie Gray, Charlie Cooke
(not necessarily all at the same time)

in the 70s a new generation emerged - Jordan, Dalglish, McGrain, Gemmill, Macari, Souness

Even in the early 80s we had some good strikers - Nicholas, McClair, Johnston, McCoist.

Where are they now? Would make a good subject for a sociology thesis.

I was thinking of Ferguson myself, because he obviously have a good hand with younger players. But as a national coach, you don't have that much influence on the day-to-day following up on players.

Counting points, Scotland is not yet out of WC-06, but if Saturdays match is the standard, I don't leave them much chance. Scotland may get another nail in the coffin vs. Moldova. Again, no offense, Italy had serious trouble against the Moldovans.
