Team ranking and seeding 2005-06

Looking at Rosenborgs chances of getting seeded in CLQR3 next season, I observed that the battle will be very interesting. Here are the countries in question:

1st column: CL group stage
2nd column: CLQR3
3rd column: CLQR2
Spain 2- 2- 0
Italy 2- 2- 0
England 2- 2- 0
Germany 2- 1- 0
France 2- 1- 0
Portugal 2- 1- 0
Greece 1- 1- 0
Holland 1- 1- 0
Czechs 1- 1- 0
Turkey 0- 1- 1
Scotland 0- 1- 1
Belgium 0- 1- 1
Switzerland 0- 1- 1
Ukraine 0- 1- 1
Norway 0- 1- 1
Russia 0- 0- 1

Hoping this (attempted pre-formatted) table is understandable, and following teams may fight for one (I think) seeded place in CLQR3 (if they qualify from domestic league):

Rosenborg - 30.676
Besiktas - 30.470
Wisla Krakow - 30.270
Sporting - 30.210
Dinamo Kiev - 26.791
Basel - 24.064
Benfica - 23.210

Numbers taken from Berts site "Team Ranking". Four first teams very close (hereby called Rosenborg & co), three latter have work to do. My prediction/calculation is that the team (and only that team) that is topping this list at the end of EC-season, may be seeded in CLQR3. And remember - three bonus points may close(or open) gaps here and there. Looking closer:

(10)= 10 teams ahead of Rosenborg & co on team ranking

Spain(10)- 2 teams seeded in CLQR3
no comment required

Italy(6) - 2 teams seeded
hardly any surprises

England (6) - 2 teams seeded
Don't think anyone can rub Arsenal, ManU and Chelsea. Dark horse not seeded before Rosenborg & co. is Middlesbrough, that intend to fight for 4th place.

Germany(6) - 1 team seeded
Werder is interesting here. They have 27.008 points included three bonus points, and if 3rd place in Ger PL they may end up unseeded in CLQR3.

France(7) - 1 team seeded
Lots of clubs alternating in the top of Fra PL later years. Unpredictable.

Portugal(2) - no teams seeded
Porto and Boavista way ahead of Rosenborg. Porto will take one of two CL-places. Probably Benfica the other. But looking at team ranking, Rosenborg is ahead of both Benfica and Sporting (very close here). Just hoping that Boavista will not take third place in Por PL

Greece (4) - 1 team seeded
Panathinaikos and Olympiakos are the natural participants here. Pana and AEK Athens far ahead of Rosenborg, but Olympiakos (incl. three bonus points for CL)and PAOK just 3.5 points ahead of Rosenborg. Both teams 34.009. It may end up there that Rosenborg & co will have to overcome PAOK/Olympiakos on team ranking to get a seeded spot.

Holland (3) - 1 team seeded
PSV, Ajax and Feyenoord will fight for two places in CL.

Czech Republic (3) - 1 team seeded
Slavia and Sparta natural favorites. Slavia 4 points ahead of Rosenborg. Interesting, Slovan Liberec vs Schalke in IT-final. Both teams just 0.5 to 1 point ahead of Rosenborg & co.

Turkey (1) - hmmmm
Again 10th place (from 2003/04), meaning that winner of TUR PL may advance from CLQ3 to CL group stage. Gala is only team ahead of Rosenborg, but Besiktas is breathing heavily behind Rosenborg. Guess more than 50% probability that Besiktas will take one of the two top places in TUR PL, so important for Rosenborg to stay ahead of them in Team ranking

Scotland (2) - 1 team seeded
Guess who? Rangers just 2.5 points ahead of Rosenborg, so...

Belgium (2) - 2 teams seeded
Anderlecht (or Mouscron..)and Club Brügge.

Switzerland (0) - no teams
Basel has to do something spectacular to overcome Rosenborg & co.

Ukraine(1) - no teams
Dinamo Kiev in deep shit. Trailing RBK & co with 3.5 to 4 points. I will follow them closely.

Russia (1) - hmmmm
Lok Moskva not participating this year, but may win Rus PL. 4.5 points ahead of Rosenborg, meaning Rosenborg needing five, max six points on their own to overcome them.

Conclusion (cautiously optimistic): 15 teams seeded before Rosenborg. Meaning that the winner of "Group Rosenborg" on team ranking will have a chance to be seeded in CLQR3. Yes, I know there are a full league season ahead for most of teams in "Group Rosenborg", but as mentioned, to "win" this group you will probably have to take 6-7 points on your own, meaning that without qualifying for any group stage, you may forget seeding in CLQR3 next season. Let's get ready to rumble!!

Interesting, but don't you have a hidden 100% prediction that rosenborg will qualify?

OK, just joking, if there is anything in european football with 100% assurance is that rosenborg will qualify.

No, I don't mark. Its all if's. But yes, the probability that Rosenborg will take one of two places in CLQ from Norway is massive. If it had been just one, I would have been more cautious.

And, the probably best thing for Norway is if Rosenborg take second place in Nor PL, i.e CLQR2. Think that they have better chances of advancing to CLQR3 than other Norwegian teams.

i think besiktas and sporting will make a battle in this rosenborg group. because wisla krakow will be eliminated by real with a high probability and they will contuniue in uefa cup which is mean they won't take 3 bonus point from Cl.
rosenborg have made very poor performance in last years. and i think and hope dinamo will be eliminated by trabzonspor. trabzonspor did not participate in last years in the cups, but they have very good players like ibrahim yattara, fatih tekke and gokdeniz karadeniz. their names are not knowed but they are young and good players.

besiktas made a very good team. we make very spectacular transfers like vicente del bosque, john carew from valencia, juanfran from celta vigo and a few good turkish players. we alse had a good team from last year. i think besiktas will make a good job in UEFA cup this year.

Oh yes, Wisla is propably out of CL this year but I think that those three points could easily be earn in first round of UEFA and later in group stage.

Afer the start of the local competitions, we indeed can start to look ahead. Though the surprises of Anderlecht and Rangers may be the start of an open competition, I don't think that will happen. The closeness of 'Rosenborg & Co' show that 'luck' will have a hand in who will be seeded next year: a good draw may mean a couple of points extra and so a seeding in CLQ3 next year. All teams involved (from Slavia Praha to Benfica) will get at least 5 points and, when outperforming 15 points.

I think we can say more after CLQ3 of this year (after the draw for the groups + UC-R1)

P.S.
And now for someting completely different:
Did anybody noticed that if you look at Teamranking, the complete top 17 (still) participates in CL?
28 out of top 50. There are only 7 UefaCup participants in the top 50. 15 don't play at all (3 are still in the intertoto:Villareal, Schalke & Liberec)

Indeed, Ricardo, luck is a component here. Thats why I put up these tables to show how close it is, and how far in advance you must think. Of course all the teams have to qualify from home league first, but just one silly point lost (e.g. if Wisla Krakow after their 8-2 win had calmed it down at home and maybe played a draw) may mean unseeded in CLQ3 next season and (far)lesser chances reaching CL group stage and then miss out millions of euros.

So, as I wrote, missing out group stage this season, and you're out of seeding in CLQ3 next season. But they don't need to go into CL, UC group stage may compensate.

Looking at the seeding of the low countries in the first Qualification rounds, then actually nothing has happened (sofar).
As almost all teams play with their countries coefficient, just looking at the countries suffice. Hardly any change overthere. Iceland(plays Dunfermline and Hammerby) and especially Ireland(advice:lose 8-0 first game and then you can get 1 or even 2 points at home!) can maybe overcome Lithuania. But they will have to make up a whole point, naah it won't happen.
So what's interesting if a team with a team coefficient plays in UC. Shelbourne is the one which makes a chance to get one!!

The list is based on 5 years ranking. ome years ago Rosenborg did well and if I remember correctly hit 46 in ranking. Norwegian club football is going down, (like the Danish) and sorry, but RBK has always been so lucky.
I personally hope for a reeat of last year, where israeli football did well.

In general the CLQ is simple a way to get the small team off the way for the big. The big HATE the small. Remember Cruff some years ago say: why Molde had to play CLQ ??
So if you a Scandinavian, Benelux, Eastern European and support the major teams buying merchandinse, travel to see the games etc, basically you're helping to a reverse robin hood and ultimately help to 'kill' your teams.

Everybody love an underdog, like Shelbourne. And no, hAAbet, I don't remember what Cruyff said about Molde? But I remember what Dutch players said when little Norway qualified for WC-1994 on behalf of England: "Norway has nothing to do in USA, but England has. Americans want to see England". What a stupid argument! The BIG nations want the big tournaments for themselves, so they can accumulate more spectators and thereby more money. Latvia is an example of teams not wanted.

But this goes the whole way down. Rosenborg big in Norway wanting more TV-money than other teams because they gather more viewers. Same with Brøndby and FCK in Denmark, and the three big teams in Holland.

It's hard for an unseeded team (especially unseeded from CLQR1 !!) to qualify for CL group stage, but do we have any alternative to qualification? We want to see our team there, but its a tournament for the supposed best teams, not a random draw among European teams.

And hAAbet, Rosenborg have had the margins on their side several times in CLQ, but calling it pure luck when a team qualify eight times in a row for CL group stage (one time automatically, AND because Norway did well on nation ranking), is of course rubbish. Presume you are Danish (?), hAAbet, and suffering from the Danish disease "we hate Norwegian football"

I've calculated all the seedings for next season's European Cups. starting from the current standings (if teams are equal or if the league didn't start yet I've looked at the final table of last season).

I've made the assumptions that the same country's take the Fair Play spots, that every country has the same number of Intertoto-participants and that the CL and UEFA-cup winner will be qualified via their league already (so no TH spot).
