| How many teams for Portugal this year?!portuguese press sucks...I don?t understand, our sports journals are always saying that portugal will only take 5 teams this year, even some club managers are convicted that?s true!!Portugal is 7th in the rank so the first placed will go directly into the champions league, 2nd placed to the 3rd qualifying round; 3rd, 4th and 5th and the cup winner to the uefa cup, so there will be 6 uefa competition qualified teams in this year portuguese championship! .... I have another doubt, in what conditions will the 6th placed qualify for european competitions?! |

| you're right, six teams for portugal next year. You nedd to be top 3 to make the 6th plased team enter the uefa cup. |

| 5 only is possible when you have 4 teams that qualifee from the Competition and one as being the CL winner or UEFA Cup winner or Intertoto winner.
So where the Portugues press got the number of 5 clubs is a complete mystery.
Next year (04-05) Portugal will have one team in the CL first round and one in the third qualification round. The numbers 2 untill 5 and the cup winner will qualifee for the UEFA Cup.
In the season 05-06 Portugal will have two spots in the first round CL, one in the 3rd Q. round and 3 in the UEFA Cup.
Also for the season 06-07 Portugal has a good position. |

You are right in what you say.
The newspapers are wrong.
I think the 6th will go to Europe if:
a) FC Porto and Benfica go to CL
b) The winner of the cup is in the 1st 5 places of the league and the finalist is too.
c) The winner of the cup is the same as of the league and the finalist finishes in the 1st five places after the champion.
So in practice, and as we already know that the league will finish something like:
1 - FC Porto
2 - Sporting
3 - Benfica
4 to 7 - Braga
10 to 17 - Belenenses,
(for those who don't know and care the semifinals are Braga - FC Porto and Benfica - Belenenses)
we will have the 6th playing in Europe if:
the final is Benfica-Porto;
or Braga-Benfica ONLY if Braga finishes in the 6th place or higher;
If it's Braga-Belenses and Braga wins and finishes 6th or higher.
If it's a Porto-Belenenses final, the 6th won't qualify to UEFA.
I hope it's a FC Porto-Benfica! How long has it been since we have one of those? |
