As you all know soccer is not the sport here in the states yet. I am trying to learn a little bit about the whole thing. I would be gratefull for any answers you guys have we. Thanks.

1. When does European cup football regular season start and finish?

2.When does the championship tournament start and finish?

3.When do the national teams play qualifying games?

4. When do the national teams play for the world cup?

5. Do the scheduals for the national teams conflict with the club teams? What if a player is on both teams and has a conflict?

Thanks again. Just trying to get a feel for the whole thing.

Hey Friscokid. Nice to see an American wanting to learn more about European football.

I will try to answer your questions as good as I can.

1/ The European season usually starts in July with the first preliminary rounds. The Champions League which you probably know the best, begins with the group phase in September. The final is played at the end of May.

2/I guess, by the championship tournament, you mean the EURO2004. It is played between June 12 and July 4 this summer in Portugal.

3/The next qualifying round will be the qualification for the World Cup 2006. The qualification round will take off in September 2004 and end in November 2005.

4/The World Cup 2006 will be played in Germany between June 9 and July 9.

5/The European national teams don't play at the same times as the clubs, but there is often a conflict between European clubs and (particularly African) internationals in other continents.

For qualification games, the country has first priority to the player, but you often see the club trying to force the player to stay with his club. Sometimes, the player quits the national team to fight for his place in the club.

I hope that your questions have been answered satisfactorily, but otherwise you must post again. I am sure, plenty of people are willing to help you.

Hi
There are some essential difference between how USA and Europe organize sport.
There is no salary gap or player gap. The idea of moving teams is not something europeans like, and to my knowledge only happen once in England.
Another issue there is different is relagation. All league has teams who must go down a league. Here is the sport (number of points) and not the money who counts !!!!
A finally difference is almost all teams, has a youth organization o which they occasionally develop their own players. Or the Hi-school and college principles does not exist.

- There is phrase saying: The most capitalistic in Europe is sport and the most socialistic in USA is sport.
To my knowledge, true.

U say soccer is not a big sport in USA, right but MLS has an average of 14500 attandance per game. About half of the best leagues in Europe.

A franchise move happened also in Bulgaria a couple of years ago - currently the team is topping the table at midseason break.

There have been 2 franchises recently in Scotland.

Livingston in the Premier Division used to be called Meadowbank Thistle and play in Edinburgh. They moved to Livingston and changed the name in 1995.

Last year Airdrie went bankrupt, then Clydebank went bankrupt....and a new Airdrie was formed, and they bought Clydebank's place in Division 2!

There is also Clyde, who did the same as Livingston, except chance the name.
Caledonian Thistle didn't even exist as a football club, when they were invited to join the Scottish league.

They were the two biggest clubs in Inverness that merged Inverness Caledonian and Thistle.

They only merged when league entry was guaranteed. Only after that did they form.
Many Caley & Thistle fans still don't support the club.
Interesting that the other highland league club in the city, Clach, did not get involved.
Speaking of former Highland league clubs, I'm suprised how poor Elgin City have performed.
