Help on National Cup looser's place
Author: Zeppa Date: 20-06-2003, 15:12	In portugal the cup winner goes directly into UEFA cup 1st round and the league's 3rd place has to play the qualifying round. But this year, Porto won both the league and the cup. So, Uº de Leiria was the cup looser and Sporting the 3rd place in the league, But Sporting got the place in the 1st round of UEFA cup and Uº Leiria the place in the qualifying round. Can anyone explain this yo me?

1.04 Only the winners of the domestic cup competition organised by the national
association, or, if they qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the domestic
cup runners-up, may qualify for the UEFA Cup. Should both these clubs
qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the association concerned may
enter the club which finishes the top domestic league championship
immediately below the other club(s) which qualify for the UEFA Cup.

1.05 In the case of paragraph 1.04, the UEFA Cup representative of the
association in question that finishes the top domestic league championship
in the highest position enters the competition at the stage initially reserved
for the domestic cup-winners
..."

sorry, that was an old version, here is the newest one (from 2002/2003):

"1.04 If the winners of the domestic cup competition (...) qualifiy for the UEFA Champions League, the domestic cup runners-up may qualify for the UEFA Cup. Should both these teams qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the association concerned may enter (...) the club which finishes (...) immediately below the other club or clubs qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

1.05 In both of the cases set out in 1.04 above, the access stage initially reserved for the domestic cup winners shall be allocated to the club which finishes the domestic league championship in the highest position out of all clubs which qualify for the UEFA Cup (...)"
