| With the addition of "Fair Play" Ipswich Town and "Intertoto Cup" Fulham FC, England now has 9 teams in the CL and UC. Too many.... By the way, Ipwich Town plays in Division 1 (not the Premiership) this season!! |

| Lorient from France the same! Leixoes from Portugal too! Both in Division 2 (like Div.1 of England). So, 9 english representatives in UEFA cups. Spain had also 9 teams in 96-01 and 94-99 periods. But who forgets France who had 10(!) in 93-98 period. |

| Leixões is in division II B, which is in fact the portuguese third division, equivalent to division II in England. By the way Leixões qualified yesterday for the first round in UEFA cup beating FK Belasica 1-2 away in Macedonia. This was really unexpected! |

| I think it really sucks that there are no Portugese teams in the Champions League. Let's hope they can get their coefficient up a bit in the UEFA cup. |

| Portuguese teams had an unlucky draw in QR3 of the UCL. Sporting Lisboa played with Internazionale, one of the strongest seeded teams. Boavista was seeded, but, unluckily again, they faced Auxerre, a good french team, one of the best of the unseeded ones. |

| Thanks to the Leixoes surprise - meaning a third division team from Portugal can beat first division teams from Macedonia: anyone thinking about divisions in European football ? - Portugal still has 4 teams playing. They may get points to avoid Portugal going down the ranking. But, for the first time in a lot of years there are no portuguese team in CL. I guess this has happened only once.
Now, guess what we are thinking back here at Portugal about the "big five" total success and Intertoto bonus of extra teams... |

| sometimes its better not to have team in the champions league its easier to get points in the uefa cup while in the champions league if you lose all games like fener last season you get only 1 point |

| I am not from Portugal, but, during the last years, the best representative of Portugal at the Champions League was FC Porto, who finished 3rd last season and will play at the UEFA Cup. |

| The problem with being in UC to gain points easily is that, on average, a team makes less games than in CL. So, i guess that benefits can be either way, depending on how good a team is and on lucky draws.
On the other way, it is know that increasing the number of teams produces the yo-yo effect. In fact, Portugal's ranking has been improving ever since it has only 4 teams on European football, while it was decreasing with 6 teams. So, i guess that 9 teams for England is only an indicator of PAST success.
Also, these yo-yo effects mean that the criteria for setting points/teams/ranking is not very robust. For me, a fading average over 5 years - with weights of 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, 4/5 for past years and 1 for the last current year - would filter much of the yo-yo effect. Another improvement could be the smoothing of the number of teams vs. ranking position for the 7-10 ranking countries awarding them not only 6 or 4 teams but five for countries in 8-9 place. Also, Intertoto and Fair play spots should be awarded in such a way that no country could get more than 1 extra team. |

| Sorry, correction of previous post:
"Another improvement could be the smoothing of the number of teams vs. ranking position for the 7-10 ranking countries awarding them not only 6 or 4 teams but five, OR AT LEAST for countries in 8-9 place." |

| I aggre that the easy way to get points in the UEFA-cup results in a Yo-Yo effect. Buth I like this Yo-Yo effect! When there shouldn't be a Yo-Yo effect it would be mutch more difficult for countries like Belgium, Scotland, Portugal, ... to get more teams in European competitions and/or Champ. League.
For this reason I'm not opposed to two qualification rounds in a new UEFA-cup. (Idea of Kurt in another topic). This second qualy could give UEFA the oportunity to add some teams. Because I do aggree that the difference between country 8 (6teams) and 9 (4 teams) is too big. Just as I shouldn't be opposed to more countries entering 4 teams (now this is only possible for 21 countries) This would give also the smaller countries a goal to achieve. (Now the excelent result from Bosnian teams has little result)
It would create an extra Yo-Yo effect, buth as I said, this is only fun in my opinion. |

| If I can remember correctly France once had 10 (1) teams involved in European Tournaments. Including three teams from the InterToto!
